A less daft SERVER STATUS page ...

Uploads have been blocked for ~3 days as of the UTC Timestamp(s) of this being posted.

This is not indicated AT ALL on the SERVER STATUS PAGE ... as upload blocking is a very important error condition to mark or indicate as a fault.

PROJECT STATUS 'so called' more SERVER STATUS however
-- https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/server_status.php

This blocking due to running out of disk space happens quite often, as at least on Metosim before it reaches 30pc uploads about 3 x ~89mb Work Units.

Source Code of All Models (including the screen saver) :

Made avalable via a .torrent file @ screen saver directory level (next to the executing climate model) ... so that one can use the torrent file to eventually view the source code of all of the climate models and screen saver.

One should be able to choose to download this file via the options page where you choose what climate models you want to run.

Putting the source code on GITHUB or SOURCEFORGE would be OK too ... no harm in that.

The current mostly closed source model is somewhere between not a good idea and utterly reprobate.

In the 2000s "BIG DATA" is helped by having an open source model.

Currently the BOINC Client is not inculded in the defult build of Raspberry Pi LINUX.

A branch version of BOINC will have to be ported, and some CPUID technology added so that it can tell the RPi 2 and RPi 3 apart.

RPi 2 may be great for doing BOINC number theory maths and bitcoin hashing etc ... but only the RPi 3 has enough on board memory to do a climate simulation.

Meteo Department privitizations the world over are a bit nebulous for the simple reason that the climate and weather prediction data sets are often forced into a PAY PER VIEW model like PAY TV

... AND IT DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE you can get similar weather and climate models from other govenment run Met Offices for free

... AND IT DOES NOT WORK BEACUE the PPV model means with near 99.9% certanty no subscribers and nearly instant bankrupcy and closure

... SO privitizaiton can only mean the UK leaving the weather forcasting business forever, a sort of permanant termination of weather and climate predicition self determination

... Oddly Enough : The British Empire was built when people had to have instinctive know how with respect to weather, climate and its variation yet it is doubtful that the UK would even be able to retain what remnants of empire it does have without climate predction

WHERE IN THE EU DO YOU PAY FOR WEATHER FORCASTS?

DCF77 TIME STATION

Civil protection and weather forecast signal[edit]

Since 22 November 2006 the DCF77 transmitter uses bits 114 to transmit warning messages and weather information.

Under responsibility of the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (the German Bundesamt fr Bevlkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe, BBK), warnings to the population can be transmitted using these 14 bits.

As a further extension of the information content transmitted by DCF77, appropriately equipped radio clocks can provide a four-day weather forecast for 60 different regions in Europe.

The forecast data is provided by and under responsibility of the Swiss company Meteo Time GmbH and is transferred in a proprietary transfer protocol.

The same 14 bits are employed in a way that ensures compatibility with the transmission protocols of the warning messages. For decoding the weather forecast data a license is required.

Since the bits previously reserved for the PTB are used, older radio clocks should not be affected by the weather data signal.

BTW : DCF77 IS A SIMI-PRIVATE TIME STATION!

Future and call sign

The signal distribution contract between the PTB and the DCF77 transmitter operator Media Broadcast GmbH is periodically renewed.

After negotiations in 2013 the PTB and Media Broadcast GmbH agreed to continue the dissemination of the German national legal time for the next 8 years.

The PTB expressed it will initialize new negotiations if modernization activities at the transmitting station to improve the signal reception reliability throughout Europe by increasing the transmission power before 2021 are deemed necessary.[11]

The call sign DCF77 stands for D = Deutschland (Germany), C = long wave signal, F = the longwave transmitters on the premises of the transmitting station Mainflingen (due to its vicinity to Frankfurt am Main), 77 = frequency: 77.5 kHz.

BBC UK Meteo Department should do its own BOINC Weather Forcasting ... with only limited involvement from climateprediction.net or the Met Office.

This means a different BOINC project, run somewhere else in the UK.

If one is just doing 10 day weather forcasts [and forward looking seasonal predictions] (model run days less than 90) there is less a need for Met Office dependancy.

With near real time weather forcasting, one can use datasets from higher resolution weather monitoring networks -- just like the Met Office currently does.

Using BitTorrent Files embedded into an RSS feed, the multimegabyte models can be distributed globally for nearly free.

-- The update cycle for 10 day weather forcasts is 8 hours, and has been for 20 or so years. With a 5.5 to 6.2 hour work unit deadline this is not an issue, noting that the seasonal look ahead models should have 40 day deadlines.

-- Most models would have computed in 3 modes : 1 degree + 1 gradiant +r 1/2 gradient in order to average out resolutional variations.

-- Even with 15 minute time resolution, a 7 day global model will not be huge. Even at 1/4 Gradiant resolution and 10 minute steps the file will not become explosivly huge (100 mb+).

-- Note that there is an assumption that Ensembles of 100 to 1000 models would be integrated into the released data sets.

+++

SO LONG AS THE ADS ARE NOT OBTRUSIVE (NOR CULTURALLY DISTASTFUL) AND FOR UK MANUFACTURED GOODS ONLY

-- Having some room for adverts in the screen saver would be OK.

+++

ALL OF THE CLIMATE MODELS (and data sets where applicable) SHOULD BE OPEN SOURCE -- THAT IS TO SAY THE GENENRAL PUBLIC SHOULD BE ABLE TO INSPECT THEM.

THE BBC (as well as most other UK broadcasters and media outlets) need to embrace the open source movement as the UK has become impovrished to such an extent that closed source systems and services are no longer affordable for most of the population.

Usage Bug : One version of WAH2 needs to be renamed!

The two current WAH2 programs are very different binaries.

One will probably work fine on the x86-64 CPU you have -- but probably not both.

One application seems to work for my computer configuration, where the other crashes before reaching even 5%!

? ? ?
! ! !

Where is the renaming needed?

1. The website area where you choose what apps you want to run
-- http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/prefs.php?subset=project

This 1st option will be updated when the BOINC server is asked for a site upate, and only requires under 40 bytes (or less) of table text to be altered.

2. EQUALLY IMPORTANT : in the "Tasks" bar text column "Application".

Only about 40 bytes of back end website text would need to be changed, so not a huge alteration.

NB NB NB NB NB

BOTH LOCATION NEED TO HAVE AND USE STANDARDIZED "CALL LETTER LIKE" NAMES FOR EACH OF THE APPS BEING RUN.

WHY THE CURRENT PROBLEM EXISTS
- Both apps have 7.08 Version Numbers! (as far as I can tell)

APP NAME STANDADIZATION IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE EXTRA USER CONFUSION IS COMING WITH

NB NB NB

Probably haveing 2 letters (after the WAH2) in the user interface is enough to tell the apps apart ... but 2 or 5 letters would really help to tell these apps apart best.

(WAH2-ACE)

cpn probably not ready for the MS Win7 --> Win10 transition ...

Mainly Microsoft is transitioning for free a huge number of Win7 computers to Win10.

None of the codebases for any of the weather or climate sims are ready, as far as I know for this.

Probably will not work
-- Screensaver

May work
-- Climate sims that have no screensaver, but have very generalized x86 Win code.
-- Climate sims that are 32 bit, not 64 bit.

9) Message boards : Number crunching : Pending Credit Catchup Problem, for me ~150k owed or outstanding (Message 51673)
Posted 23 Mar 2015 by HireMe.geek.nz
Post:
Hi, as mentioned in other threads, pending credits is not used by CPDN Credits are granted based on trickle up messages sent by tasks as they progress meaning that even if a task crashes you still get credit based on work done. The pending credit figure is to do with the BOINC server program which insists on producing that figure.

Because the pending credit system where used usually depends on a second computer sending in a result that corroborates the first one for a task sent in and CPDN doesn't send the same task to other computers except when the task fails to complete on the first one this will never happen so your "pending credit" will keep going up.

That is not to say there aren't problems from time to time with credit on CPDN but in my experience credit is always given eventually.

I am aware of the different nature of Climate Simulation work units vs most other work units.

The BOINC system was somewhat redesigned to handle the "Unique Work Unit" parameter [that is the default setting with Climate Prediction] (as no other project, save the Earthquake Sensor etc does this).

However, for work units that did not complete -- in order to keep user loyalty ... is it not good practice to grant credit for the Trickles Sent? In granting trickle credit, it also opens up a window for database cleaning and normalizing.

Is it a systemwide problem or some ongoing 3 month glitch?

IF it is, consider giving people the credit with some extra Interest to make up for the delays and glitches.

#1. For the Climate Simulation

#2. For the Climate Simulation

#3. For the Screensaver

+++

WARNING

THIS POLICY IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR 32 bit only SYSTEMS

SEPARATE BINARIES WILL NEED TO BE COMPLIED FOR THE CLIMATE SIMULATION MODELS, SO THAT THEY RUN EXCLUSIVELY ON 2 CPUs

It is doubtful that climatepredction.net will be able to get around to doing this until the Summer of 2014.

The more CPUs you use, the more credit the BOINC system gives you.

So more CPUs is generally better, and the speed of the iterations may improve to a point of maybe 0.65s / Time Step

Being stuck with just temperature or pressure or precipitation makes the screen saver too boring.

Random or Fixed switching, I don\'t care.

Unit interval: Every 12 hours is fine, as the context switching costs CPU time.
