So it will probably always think it's offline. When it only says "Deferring communication...", it is, I believe, only an informational statement, that is, it hasn't actually tried to connect anywhere, it's just telling you when it's going try the next time. If it is actually trying to connect, there are extra messages including some sort of failure message if it fails to connect.
