21) Message boards : Number crunching : A question for the project staff (Message 22584)
Posted 3 May 2006 by crandles
Post:
I wonder if that is the number of incomplete WU/models that have been returned.

My first thought was they say waiting for validation and stay as such until a validation process is run. CPDN doesn\'t have a validation process like other BOINC projects (which do redundant computing) so all finished models stay there. However the number of completed models is higher than 90,829 so they cannot all be staying in an unvalidated state. This leaves a few possibilities one being that the validation routine just checks they are complete and if so removes them from unvalidated.

Other possibilites include it is the number of models returned since a date that is later than the beginning of BOINC.

There are contact details on the forms to ask any questions you want.

(The reason I am sure the money got through is because I received an email from Myles Allen. That applies to the UK development office - can\'t be sure about the US office.)

26) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : trickle up error temporarily terminates all projects\' work units (Message 20904)
Posted 1 Mar 2006 by crandles
Post:
I\'m sorry but I am a little confused by what you mean by \"boinc drops all of the various project workunits\"

What should happen is the connection fails so the trickle is stored until the nect successful communication. During this period crunching should continue as normal.

You seem to be saying your computer sits idle. This shouldn\'t happen. Can you explain a little more about what makes you think the system is idle?

There may be solutions such as setting network activity disabled and just allowing communication every so often. However, I want to ensure I understand the problem before recommending anything like that.

I\'ve never seen one of those before. It is what I would expect to happen with a calculation error.

It is a nice demonstration of how little initial conditions matter. The extrapolation of the trend in the last 8 years looks like it is going to end up in the right place. The same does not appear to be true of the precipitation though. Interesting!

29) Questions and Answers : Windows : is my model running correctly? (Message 20632)
Posted 22 Feb 2006 by crandles
Post:
I think you have 2 models running on your hyperthreaded processor.

I have never heard of a model going back from 1830 to 1815. So I suspect you are just looking at the other model.

The model saves its work every 3 model days (144 timesteps) so you should loose only a small amount. There are other possible rewinds if the model crashes but only of a model month and a model year. Some people have found models going back to the beginning :( ! but I don\'t think it is possible to go back from 1830 to 1815 because the information to do it wouldn\'t be available.

If you think you are going to upgrade computer sometime soon anyway, I don\'t see any harm in continuing. The model should be transferrable to the new computer.
31) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : BBC Application (Message 20511)

HadCM3 was chosen because it was a good model to choose for the purpose. This means

a) Good/useful in scientific quality terms.

see graph 2b at
http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Explanation_of_the_Nature_Journal_-_First_CPDN_Results#What_about_the_effects_of_Parameters.3F

This isn\'t a cut down model for educational use only - the models are generally better than the CMIP II models.

and

b) suitable for distributing to PCs\'. All climate models of a similar useful quality are complicated beasts and some would be easier to transfer to 32bit computers than others.

For sure the partnership with the BBC was to attract more participants. However the strategy page in Sept 2003 was more or less the same and mentioned that they were planning to do experiments 2 and 3 with a coupled ocean and experiment 1 used a simplified slab ocean. So it was clear that it was going to get more complicated even back then. I doubt that this Meltdown programme (Monday 20th Feb BBC 9PM-10pm) was planned back then.

I think the BBC has insisted on having some things, but this is more like some usability testing than changing the scientists plans.

Posted 18 Feb 2006 by crandles
Post:
It is sensible to use a simplified slab model to investigate equilibrium climate sensitivity (change in temp to a doubling of CO2) because it reaches equilibrium much faster because there is no slow reacting ocean.

When trying to do a realistic hindcast/forecast you need a realistic ocean.

You may want to read more about the different models at http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Climateprediction_Model and links from there.

Hope this helps

Perhaps http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Why_doesn%27t_the_exact_same_model_work_out_the_same%3F helps.

There is also an interesting link from there to http://mustelid.blogspot.com/2005/10/butterflies-notes-for-post.html
which discusses/did what we were trying to do on the php board in a much much better way.

I don\'t see any computers attached to your account. Might a firewall be preventing connection? You need to allow boinc.exe to access the internet on port 80.

35) Questions and Answers : Getting started : CPDN / BBC project (Message 20185)
Posted 14 Feb 2006 by crandles
Post:
With version 5.x.x clients you can attach with the client wizard. Just provide the URL and select new account.

Existing BOINC users should not use the download button as the BOINC versions are different. The team have now suggested on the other board that the coupled model will be offered in CPDN.

It may be better to wait for clarification.

Don\'t use the download from that site, just attach to the project using normal BOINC client. The url is http://bbc.cpdn.org/

or you can wait until you can get them from climateprediction.net without having to attach to another project. (I don\'t know how long that will be.)

36) Questions and Answers : Windows : CPdN not working correctly-signature verification failed for almost a week. (Message 20165)
Posted 13 Feb 2006 by crandles
Post:
Not at all sure if this will help, but you may want to try setting the project to suspend as soon as it starts the download. The idea is that BOINC won\'t start to try to run the models or do the checksum test until the files are fully downloaded. Once fully downloaded then unsuspend it.

It might also be worth trying that favourite reboot the PC - I had difficulty which I think was caused by something crashed on my PC.

40) Questions and Answers : Windows : Activation of bulletin board account (Message 19855)
Posted 1 Feb 2006 by crandles
Post:
I have made this user active now.

When accounts are created they are set to inactive. If you do not respond to the activation email, it stays like that and the user cannot use the board.

If you have this problem, contact one of the site admins and they will make the account active (like I have just done for this user). I have brought up this issue and nothing seems to have happened. I suspect someone needs to contact Paul Alexander at the OU, but I don\'t know how to contact him.
