Did you do an upgrade install of 4.13? Do you still have the project subdirectories for the CPDN project? Are there still a bunch of xml files in the boinc subdirectory? In your startup folder is the boinc icon still there? You have tried a reboot?

try checking with taskmanager to see if there are any "hadsm" processes or boinc processes.

Maybe try navigating to the boinc directory and double clicking the "boinc_gui.exe" file.

Let us know if any of this helps and maybe some more information and we'll see what we can do.

It is often better to suspend then exit boinc. I've seen a message that boinc v4.13 will shut the clients down better, but I don't chance it.

When looking at the processes under taskmanager as suggested this will tell you if it is actually processing or not. There should be 2 occurances of hadsm..., one which is the model and the other I think the visualisation engine. Depending on your CPU CPDN could be running slowly &/or windows processes could be interfering.

Try suspending, exiting boinc & rebooting. this should either restart the model where it was or if it was in a crashed state it may rewind &/or upload. If other programs were hogging the CPU cycles then this could help also.

If you are still having this problem could you give us more information please.

How much free hard drive space do you have available on the drive you have boinc installed to? You need to have, I believe 350 - 700 Mb free to run a CPDN model. If you are running low on HD space archive some of the directories under bioncprojectsclimateprediction.net that have no subdirectories and are full of .zip files, ~332 Mb of them.

Also the free space and model running can be influenced by the settings under your preferences tab on the website.

Hope this helps

PS: I am getting rid of Norton IS and going to other AV/FW software as the licences come up for renewall. too much overhead, problems, and gotchas.
44) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 150% slower than old model on AMD XP 2900 (2040MHz) (Message 6743)

From what I have seen and read, if you have the graphical globe displaying under boinc, especially with the star field showing the processing of the model is significantly reduced. This is as the graphic is actually quite CPU intensive and will give similar results to what you found.

Others have found that the boinc version actually runs faster, especially on Intel processors.

Another thing: I think that the latest CPDN models are actually including more atmospheric / oceanic chemistry /phsyics /interactions so they may be slower. Or this may be a plan in the works, I haven't been able to access the other forums to check lately. All new aspects to the simulation I believe will go into the boinc version, not the Classic version.

Third, each individual parameter set runs at a different rate and if you check your trickle times for different runs with the same model (diff parameters) you will notice that there can be quite a difference.

Anyway, hope that this helps you decide where to allot your spare processing cycles.

My current model was at about 98.83% and after running for 5 days I decided to reboot the system. yes, I supended first, then exited boinc.

After rebooting , waiting for all processes to start I then launched boinc. It seemed to launch OK, then I noticed no activity, no temp increase of the system to full load, etc. The work tab shows that nothing is running, same with task manager. If I then suspend and exit boinc I notice that a hadsm... process is still running. If I reboot I still have the same problems of the cpdn model running.

I've backed up the dir and shortly will try upgrading the boinc verion again with version 4.13.

Any other ideas?

TIA

Gamer007:

When you quit you need to first suspend then click exit on the boinc File menu or right clicking then system tray. It has been noted by a few others that boinc doesn't handle the exit or windows shutdown commands well.

I usually show the bionc window and do this from the File menu as I've had occasional problems with the system tray icon.

Generally what you wrote in your other message about Daily quota exceeded is a message that you receive as you computer has tried to download over 2 models in one day. Generally this indicates that the previous 2 models that it downloaded have crashed and you would have seen in the Boinc "Messages" tab some information about an error code. From the above it appears that the computer keeps crashing the models daily.

I am not familiar with the text that you have pasted in so I cannot comment further though it does seem that your computer was running models successfully. Have you made any changes to your system on or just before Oct 6?

Another thought, do you have the option to "Leave applications in memory while preempted" set to Yes? I think I read somewhere that have a "No" to this could have negative results.

You might want to try looking at some of the stickies and other information on the Climateprediction.net discussion forum at:
http://www.climateprediction.net/board/index.php

Which is accessable from the "Message Boards" menu item on the left hand side. There could be some systems stability or other issues that could be looked into.

50) Questions and Answers : Windows : Timesteps always start from 1 (Message 5722)

Post:

You can view the timesteps by right clicking the running project in the Work window. More information available in the FAQs etc.

Boinc doesn't handle windows shutdowns or crashes well (at least v4.05 doesn't) so it is best to suspend the work on the model then exit Boinc, then re-boot. Otherwise you may loos the work or crash the models initiating a download of a new dataset on startup.

Mikus:

Sounds like you have the problem under control. when it drops to 0 activity it generally means that the current simulation has crashed. This is occasionally due to model parameters but usually due to system stability. As you may have read CP stresses you system more that most other programs and will tend to find any system problems which will cause computational errors. as each successive step depends on previous results a very minor error can have propogating disastrous results.

You could check the Climateprediction.net discussion forum for more information on the stability of systems, what to check etc. Might be simplely raising thw memory voltage a little (careful with this and check information available on the internet about overclocking etc)

Hopefully I can suggest a couple things, otherwise might have to wait for one of the Core Team members. Is your PC running the latest drivers? Is the colour displayed on the scale to the right?

Another possibility could be that your model has crashed, have you tried suspending Boinc, exiting and re-booting? Depending on what is happening this could help.

You could also try looking through the "Climateprediction.net discussion forum" for others with similar problems, though I don't remember seeing anything on this one. The climateprediction members have been using this other MB for over a year and it contains a wealth of information. There are some discussions ongoing about having 2 boards.

Hope you get your prob solved soon.

53) Questions and Answers : Windows : Computation error with hadsm3 4.03 with terminal server (Message 3877)

Henrik:

If you are sitting at the computer in question and run the graphics, then check the processes in taskmanager you will see that the simulation uses a fair percentage of the resources of the PC. (this is one reason I don't use the screen saver, though I haven't tried it.) From this I'd expect that this would put a very high demand on the windows terminal accross the network.

Does the model keep on running on the PC you connected too? What program is giving the computation error? Does this happen on the PC running Boinc when you try to "Show Graphics"?

I don't know about this error but from a file perspective have you checked to see if this file exists in your BOINC directory? Did one of Microsofts features manage to cross link this file (shut down Boinc & try running check disk). Have you tried a re-boot?

Some of the others may have come across this error and be able to provide you with more information

Could you please supply a little more information, OS, error messages, etc so that people can try to figure out what's happening?

Also, check your hard drive space and confirm with your preferences to ensure there is enough space available and alloted to CPDN/Boinc to run. Needs 600+ Mb.

One thing to try is copying and pasting in the URL and Account number. Ensure that there is no spaces on either side.

Another thing is to make sure that your firewall is letting the communication from Boinc to the servers happen.

57) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Teething problems? (Message 3145)
Posted 6 Sep 2004 by Profile old_user248
Post:
This is the wish list message board so you may not get too many answers here, try looking through the Windows board above for more information on how to get things going again.

You might also want to do a surface scan to check for errors on the HD and also defrag the HD too.

Do the processes under taskmanager indicate any boinc or Hadsm3 processes running? You might want to keep in mind what software you were running when things crashed, sometimes there are incompatibilities.

I assume you have tried a reboot and re-start of boinc. If boinc doens't start then you may have to re-install the boinc client then get a new model. I'm pretty new to the boinc side of things so if you read through the Windows platform problems and also on the Climateprediction.net community space you will probably find more answers.

Brad:

Firstly, this is the Climate Prediction area, you might be able to find more specific information from the Seti@home groups at:

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_community.php

Anyway, to be able to help we'd need more information: when you open Task Manager to the Processes window do you see the boinc process (boinc_gui.exe) and some others that refer to seti?

When you have the Boinc window open look at the messages tab to see what errors it has encountered.

If it is more specific to Seti then you'll have to check their site, I think that they were having server issues a few days ago, don't know if it has been resolved.

EDIT: Yup, still down.
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=3780

You are always welcome to join in with Climate Prediction, just beware that this model has greater min system requirements than other projects and can take months to complete one model run.

Good luck with your DC projects

This is GREAT to hear. Will try again once the Windows version has finished and maybe I can get rid of M$ of a few PCs

Thanks for the information, I sure that the FAQ will help a lot for many of us. I was trying the Linux Beta as I'd like to get away from M$. We'll see with the launch tomorrow, hopefully there will be some information on what people who installed the Beta are to do to get the new client up and running, how to resolve some of the crash issues, etc.
