21) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : \'crashing\' all projects (Message 11720)
Posted 9 Apr 2005 by Profile old_user248
Post:
Are you still having this problem?

From what I understand reading posts in the other forum, the Hadsm3*_4.11 model had some stability problems and that there was a new build, 4.13 available earlier this week.

Do you have "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" on profiles page set to "yes"? This can have some effect on the stability of boinc in the M$ environment, I'm not 100% sure the effect in Linux.

I take it that you have already tried checking the hardware stability aspects, any overclock still 100% stable, hard drives OK, ran Prime95 torture test, etc? CPDN seems to stress PCs more than most of the other porjects and due to the longer timeframe and interdependancy of caclulations it is very suseptible to caclulation errors.

I am wondering about the "CPDN Monitor got quit request..." statement. I don't know much about the CPDN / boinc errors so don't know the whole origin of this, pehaps someone else does and can offer further guidance.

22) Questions and Answers : Windows : Changing Profile on 4.19 (Message 11579)
Posted 2 Apr 2005 by Profile old_user248
Post:
I am trying to change the profile in use on one of my PCs from home to School so that I can get this machine to run out of work and I can switch it to Linux totally.

Changed the profile in use for the PC under my account / Computer summary on the CPDN site and tried to update the preferences from the boinc clinet. I seems forever stuck on the Home profile and will not update. It detects the change but stays there! On Linux this change was very easy.

Any ideas?

Your installation of the Climate Model is almost immediately crashing the models. After 2 downloads in one day with error results returned the server halts sending new models to the computer so that the PC doesn't chew through hundreds of models in one day and the operator can try and rectify the problem

Can you give us some details on the specs of your PC and are you overclocking. Climate Prediction places a high demand on PCs and if there is any minor problems with the memory, CPU, harddrives, etc., it usually manages to find them and crash.

Check out <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2026">this</a> thread for some ideas on what and how to check your PC. Also, defrag the Harddrive without boinc running, use "Suspend" then "Exit"

&gt; The machines I run CP on are at work, and none of them are overclocked.
&gt;
&gt; My 2 home machines that are overclocked have no errors whatsoever in any of
&gt; the projects, Prime95 passed minimum of 24hrs.

Another thing is to check the harddrive. The usual suspects: defrag, surface check, etc. Myself and others have also found that when a HD in a system starts to go it causes the model to crash.

&gt; Those *da* files are new to me. I don't have anything like that in the
&gt; dataout directory of my linux PC. Very odd.
&gt;
My dataout directory doesn't contain those files either. Are you running the sulphur cycle or some other experiment? When running 4 concurrent models the maximum that CP took up was just over 3 Gb at the end. That includes new models for processing, etc. Once the 4 new ones started and I backed up the completed models it was back down to around 350 Mb.

I think you need to know more from the core CP staff on this to figure out what is going on.
26) Questions and Answers : Windows : Error Code -5 keeps coming - Is CPDN suitable for me? (Message 9605)

Post:
&gt; I get this quite frequently, but only after I shut down BOINC, restart BOINC,
&gt; and then wait for CPDN to start. It doesn't sem to matter how long I wait for
&gt; CPDN to completely shut down. I suspect that there is a problem in the
&gt; checkpoint code.

Checkpoints are saved at every 144 timesteps. Just to follow on to what mo.v said to ensure that in the boinc front end one suspends, then exit boinc. It does sound as if you are both trying to shut down properly but something is happening to the files being written.

If you are having problems running CP one thing to check is the stability of your machine with software such as: <A HREF="http://www.memtest86.com/">Memtest86</A> and <A HREF="http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm">Prime95</A> torture test. These software will test your system to help show if any problems exist. Your problems appear to be with the shut down phase though.

Another think to check is that the hard drive is defragmented. To do this you should exit boinc first :)

It could be a problem with some of the controling xml files or the restart information written by CP but I am out of my league there. If you have another PC that runs CP OK you could compare some of the files to see if you can find a problem but I don't know if that would help.

Posted 11 Feb 2005 by Profile old_user248
Post:
I don't have numbers for a P4 3.6+, but my FX-53 running an 11.5% overclock gets 1.55 +/- 0.2 sec/TS depending on the particular model run on average. You have to be careful comparing these results as depending on the computational requirments of the particular parameter set the model can run faster or slower.

Before anyone makes any changes in their BIOS to the memory timings I highly recomend they read up on the Internet for several days to a week or 2 on overclocking the CPU and memory as well as your particular motherboard. Changes to the BIOS without knowing what the possible effects can be as well as how to recover from mistakes can lock your computer up solid. Also, overclocking your PC increases the heat output and can definitly be detrimental to the stability of your PC.

Naylor83: check out MSI's forums at http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php for good information on your particular motherboard.

Here is one post that is quite good at describing many of the possible settings in the BIOS as well as the effects and possible inter-relations.

Post:
&gt; &gt; Have to disagree here Dave... Looked at my model the other day and it
&gt; was
&gt; &gt; eating around 850-900Mb of HDD space during phase 3.
&gt;
&gt; I find that surprising. I have a machine running two models under HT at the
&gt; moment, one halfway through phase 2 and the other two thirds of the way
&gt; through phase 3. The total size of the BOINC folder is 748 MB.
&gt;
&gt; Are you sure it didn't include folders from earlier runs, which are archived
&gt; in the BOINC projects folder by default?

I was just quoting the FAQ that was set up in September. There may have been some changes which increases the Hd requirements, and or if as Andrew stated other information downloaded. Mine has been up to 5 Gb but that was including completed models. Once I archive the complete runs it is generally 1.2 Gb. A WinXP Athlon machine with 1 completed model mid phase 2 is using 713Mb. The about 600Mb figure seems right.

&gt; Nice to know. Unfortunately, the 1.08 drivers have a bug that limits the
&gt; Parhelia 128R 4xAGP to 64MB instead of 128MB, so that's really not an option.
&gt; I guess I'll postpone reinstalling BOINC until new Matrox drivers come out.
&gt;
As mentioned by G Pascal, you could run the project without using the screen saver aspect, or viewing the model if you wish. There is many of us who do not view the model with the built in viewer/screen saver as it can consume a fair amout of your processing power. There is also some other visualisation software available on the site in the FAQ or under "Getting Started" that may work instead.

Aother trick some of us found was rolling back to a previous video driver version that worked before the update.

Above all thanks for your interest, welcome abord and hope that you manage to find and equitable solution.

Patrick

First, welcome to CPDN, we users should be able to help you get things up and running soon.

The <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/quick_faq.php#g">FAQ</a> contains some information on how much space each model needs. It needs about 600Mb for each full model run and about 330Mb of information will be left on your computer once a model run is finished and the partial information uploaded.

That being said the 1 Gb that you have free will allow you to run about 1 complete model before your Hd becomes full. You should look into clearing up some space on your Hd then defragging the Hd to have as much contiguous space possible.

Searching the net with Google should yeild you instructions on clearing up space on your Hd, other than buning CD's of your information.
31) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : boinc client version 4.19 (Message 8740)

Post:
&gt; When I started a new computer with CPDN recently, it dl'ed 4.19, so I assume
&gt; no there is no problem running it. But it might be a good idea to backup your
&gt; boinc directory if you switch the program half-way through.

Some people (myself included) like to wait till either the end of a model run or the end of a phase before doing upgrades but make a backup as mentioned, just in case.
32) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : climateprediction slow on linux boxes? (Message 8736)

&gt; Yes, I also get very weird numbers for my Linux computers with respect to ALL
&gt; numbers (uptime, up/download rate,....

For my dual Xeon EMT64 3.2 Ghz @ 3.456 GHz running FC3 &amp; 4 models I get FPU of 738.4 and Integer of 1555 which is worse than all my machines, including a 2 GHz laptop running XPPro, so Yup, numbers kinda meaningless.

I haven't done a speed comparison, which is very difficult due to processing rates of different models but concensus is that things run faster on Linux.

I have begun getting the "forrtl: info: Fortran error message number is 63." error and in the Intel compiler documentation this indicates:

Output conversion error:

When this situation is encountered, the overflowed field is filled with asterisks to indicate the error in the output record.

This has not been a critical error to this point. some other text in the error file are as follows:

The machine is a Dual Xeon 3.2 Ghz with a mild OC, I'll crank it down a bit to see if this helps but I don't know if this is the problem or not.

If anyone knows of this issue please advise, thanks.

35) Questions and Answers : Windows : How do I delete a computer from my profile? (Message 7588)
Posted 25 Jan 2005 by Profile old_user248
Post:
I don't think that you can. If you could delete a computer from your profile you would loose the credit for that PC. Depending, I'm not sure how it works but you may be able to merge it with another PC.

I've tried all of this with one PC that I used during the Beta which had very little work done and couldn't do it.

Good luck.

This is normal behaviour. What you have got is 2 instances of the CPDN Climate Model running and 2 instances of the visulisation software running.

There is some instructions for using the visualisation software but they are on the other forum (that I can remember). The visualisation can take a fair bit of processor power when viewing so people have found it best not to leave it running all of the time. Also, the key "0" zero toggles on or off the starfield which reduces the processor load.

Hope this helps

&gt; &gt; Hi Geophi
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; Aprechate your reply the dell came with USB mouse but have swopped it for
&gt;
&gt; If you haven't already, if there was some special drivers/software that you
&gt; installed with the trackball, make sure it is uninstalled. It sounds like
&gt; some corrupt drivers, except I don't know why it would only show up when you
&gt; are running your CPU at 100%.
&gt;
I am no expert but it definitly sounds like some sort of driver conflict between your mouse and something. Do things go crazy when you try to view the visualization? Now that I think of it CP uses openGL (I think) for the visualizations, maybe try updating the drivers for the Mouse and video card, or if MS just kindly updated things for you maybe try going back to the last version of the drivers. With a little searching around on this or the other forum you should be able to find out what is used for the visualizations and ensure that the latest version is installed.

Good Luck
DaveN

EDIT: Just notcied the post a couple down "Got problems, may have the answer here". Maybe the drivers that are pointed to could help.

&gt; So, I guess, I didn't get that far into phase 1 and so I'd hope that this WU
&gt; would be resent to some-one else (eventually), as the WU never got finished.
&gt;
&gt; Timbo

You can tell exactly how far you got into the model run by:
- going into "Your Account" on line,
- selecting "View Computers",
- select "Host" from computer in question,
- click on the number of "Results",
- and then in the list select the appropraite "Result ID" (can take a little searching to find the right one)
- then selecting the "Trickle #"

When viewing the Result IDs I find myself selecting each one in the list till I find the numbers similar to what you have quoted. Also, you can look at the same time to see if the particular model has been sent out again and if someone else had any luck completing it.

Hope this helps a bit.

39) Questions and Answers : Windows : ZoneAlarm update prevents BOINC from starting work (Message 6999)

Post:
&gt; &gt;The problem *may* have gone away, or <b>only occurs at re-boot.</b>
&gt;
&gt; I think this is it. There are some times at boot when ZA is not completely up
&gt; and running. If BOINC tries to communicate during one of these intervals it
&gt; may be blocked or cut off mid transmission. Either one could cause problems.
&gt;
&gt; I personally have not seen any problems, I use ZApro.

I too am seeing this with ZA Free version, and with other processor intensive tasks. I thought my machine had become unstable and tried running Prime95 and it would open but the processor activity would stay at minimal. Usually takes me 3-5 reboots and long waits to get it going. I was thinking of uninstalling the latest update to see if things started behaving.
