Hopefully this will motivate some heavy Windows users to install WSL2 on their computers as it is a tool from Microsoft Windows. After the initial hassle all works very well!

It looks very promising since I got WSL2 installed today! Do not despair of the two WUs, which crashed at about 13000 seconds mark. It was too many restarts after limiting WSL to 2 processors and 16GB RAM. Task Manager indicates the use of about 7% CPU and 6.7 GB RAM at the moment. It was fairly strait forward with the Guide from our Italian friends and once I had figured out, I had to make a change in the BIOS to make VM to work. Now it seems easy to operate: I made a text file with the boinccmd commands I will use and now it is just copy past to manage Boinc in WSL2.

I guess somebody with VM experience might answer this question as well. Thanks a lot! I haven't done much with WSL so can't be of a lot of help. However, this link https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl-config#configure-global-options-with-wslconfig tells you to save the file .wslconfig (no extension), in your Windows user's root directory, i.e. C:\users\klepel (or whatever name you use for your Windows user). Then restart WSL 2 and it will read the file upon restart and that should limit CPUs and RAM used in the VM. Worked! Thanks a lot!

I did this 5 minutes ago, now I am on WSL2. Hope we will soon see, if it works with climateprediction.net I am still interested how to limit the processor count and RAM for WSL2.

I am wondering how I might check, if WSL version 2 is running? Where and with which command, it might get the version of WSL? Under Titel: BOINC Client installation in WSL and link to a project, there is a Note: “WSL, by default uses all available cores and memory of you PC”and a command notepad "$ env: USERPROFILE / .wslconfig" When I execute this command, I get the following error (Spanish): “Bloc de Notas, El nombre de archive, el nombre de directorio o la sintaxis de la etiqueta del volume no son correctos.” However I am able to click this messages away and put the lines: [wsl2] memory = 3GB # Limit the machine memory to 3GB processors = 4 # Limit the cores available to the VM to 4 in the archive. Windows 10 WS, or 2. Windows 10 WSL 2. It seems that the original version wasn't using Linux, just some bodged up files to pretend to be Linux. The second version is supposed to be a real Linux version. So you may have to use the second version to have any chance of it working. I thought, I had installed WSL2, but I am not quite sure anymore... therefore I will try to install it by the step by step guide from BOINC Italy in a couple of weeks. To make sure, this is not the reason for my problems.

Sure, I limited the WSL account to just one WU with app-config… but they came all at night. The problem with these models is NOT the models, it's the convoluted way some people are trying to run them. I agree, they do run on my Lubuntu boxes without any problems. But they seem not to run on WSL at the moment. So, what are you doing to try and fix the problem with your computer? I am not sure, I might try to reinstall WSL. However; I think the problem is more, how this particular WUs react to the unusual location of the climateprediction.net files, as they are all over the place. If you're just going to let the models keep crashing until something changes, then I may have to have your computer banned as being a Serial Killer. No worry! As I wrote before, I was just trying to bring more Linux firepower online, but if not needed, my Windows BOINC installation works perfect!

She is interested in the fact that a lot of the computers producing them seem to have virtualisation. This is really great news! I hope they will find a solution. All those lines of text at the start of your post are meaningless. The part which is useful, is the one that contains: WU download error: couldn't get input files: I completely agree! That is why I put emphasis in red in my text to the parts which might be more interesting! Also, it's not a trivial matter to assemble all of the many data files, check that they're the correct ones, then bundle them up for the download server. I do not know how to bundle up the files. So please, if you're going to continue with testing, could you only run one task at a time. Never mind, there is a slim possibility to continuo, especially, if I get called out! Unfortunately, I am not sitting behind my computer 24 hours to see, if a particular WU is downloaded or not! As many here, I just like to help with my very limited knowledge, so those 15,000 Linux WUs will get processed in a meaning full time – which might be the case if we get WSL or VM to work properly. (I even considered to buy some computer parts to assemble another Linux computer to help – but…)

Now we have to wait until the ODLK1 work is cleared out. climateprediction.net resists to download a new WU. 2. It may be a problem with the port that BOINC uses to communicate between the manager and the client being used by Windows to communicate with VB The latter would require starting client and manager separately specifying the port to use which I should know how to do but can't remember off hand at the moment. We already have to open a second ubuntu window to comunicate with boinc and all communication is with command line (boinccmd).

I think you are right! There has to be some hard link, that does not exist as an example in ODLK1. As you can see in this link: ODLK1, the comuter should be visibal at the moment. Though if simply a lack of write permissions, once tracked down it should be a fairly simple fix which would allow many, "Starving" windows users to get some work as well as getting tasks returned in a more timely manner. Yes, this should be the motivation! Unfortunately, I have very limited computer knowledge, but maybe someone from the BOINC community chips in.

I suspect that Windows is putting things in the wrong places. It seems that WSL does not work like an clean Linux Computer installation or a duel boot installation, as I do have on other computers. So the files are not stored at the expected places. I did a search and found the configuration files in unusual places (for me), and stuck cc_config.xml in several places. Yes, the cc_config.xml is all over the place! As far as I know, you are the first with this error to have posted here. It would be good to try and track it down. If no one here can come up with an answer, it may be worth asking over on the BOINC forums.` Seems to be interesting to check out this forum, a user already mentioned that he is running WSL with BOINC Manager (This might be intersting for JIM1348, Mensaje 103645). I might have to study the guide "Guide to using The BOINCClient in Microsoft's WSL" as well. In the same message, it is mentioned that climateprediction.net does not work properly. For what it is worth, that particular error occurs on both Linux and Mac systems and the Linux systems I have seen it has occurred on have been running Linux natively so may not be specifically to do with WSL. MacOS being a Unix based system presumably has a common cause for the problem. Not having seen it on any computer I have owned, I can't really be of much more help. Hopefully one of the users who has had it in the past might see this and give us some more information. I looked-up my tasks and most failed on other computers as well. There might be a general problem with these tasks - it seems the WUs expect certain items in particular places, and if they are not, they error out immediately. These gives some hope, other tasks might work! So as my computer is rarely restarted, I might as well as let WSL run for itself and look if any further tasks runs properly.

On my real Linux computers I do not use the standard BOINC installation and it is another flavor, so I do not know, where to look for missing lib files. Thanks! For commenting on my hardware! I normally do climateprediction.net on Linux computers – and Windows WUs on my Windows computers – but if we are not able to bring more users to volunteer more linux computers the actual back lock will take ages. So, when I read your WSL experience, I thought I might give it a try. But my Linux Know-How is quite limited, so if it does not work with WSL I might give up after Easter Weekend.

It looks to me that you did not install the 32-bit libraries. I installed all lib 32 bit libraries your mentioned with your command. Start WSL by opening the command window "ubuntu2004.exe", located in C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\CanonicalGroupLimited.Ubuntu20.04onWindows_79rhkp1fndgsc (Though you probably have different numbers at the end) I start it right from the menu, it seems indifferent to me. And in the command window run: sudo apt install lib32ncurses6 lib32z1 lib32stdc++-7-dev Did this. As for the other problems, my memory is hazy, but my notes indicate that the cc_config.xml should be located in: /etc/boinc-client/ which you can get to by opening the WSL command window as above. Yes, there is an example cc_config.xml, but it is not read starting BOINC. I might change the names and change some lines in it to check again. I used the "nano" editor in Ubuntu to just create the file, and then copy and paste the contents from my Windows machine. There may be better ways to do it. I expect that Leafpad will work fine. I was thinking if I might download leafpad and try to make the cc_config and app_config with Leafpad, but will it even start? And secodndly and even more important: Any ideas why the WUs do not run at all?
60) Message boards : Number crunching : New Model Type HadAM4 (Message 62395) Posted 3 May 2020 by klepel Post: Just to clarify: a) computer is limited to "use at most = 99%" b) climateprediction is limeted to 2 WUs with app_config c) rest of the task is CPU: tn-grid and GPU: gpugrid d) CPU is works at 4100 GHz - I tried to go higher (4150 GHz - around april), but then tn-grid has some random errors "SIGSEGV: segmentation violation", so I limited it again to 4100 GHz, I had some rare shut-downs since then.* e) With this set-up RAM seems not to be an issue f) I run some dispersion models on the computer for work sometimes, but not during this shutdown. g) I clean computer periodicaly, so dirt should be no issue * this explains some errors. tn-grid works fine again, this is why I am wondering why climeteprediction does has some errors.
