1) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : * Sticky - PowerPC Mac users (Message 25412)

I\'m really happy to hear that there\'s progress at least for the Intel Macs. My MacBook Pro checks every day to see if there is work available. Should I also be watching the news for a beta test announcement?

The problems Les points out are significant but, hopefully, not insurmountable. Most of them are outside our control but I don\'t think it would be hard to get the project an Intel Mac. I don\'t know anyone at Apple to ask but I\'d be happy to make a contribution toward purchasing one. I\'m sure a number of other Mac users would, too. I know Mac users are a minority among possible participants but we could help recruit more of them if there was a client for them to use.
3) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : No work sent (there was work for other platforms) (Message 24293)

Steve: We REALLY appreciate you effort and contribution.
We\'re currently unable to support Macs so due to personnel and resource availability.
We\'ll try to make application for Macs available in the near future.
In the mean time you can participate in other BOINC projects.
I hope you understand.

I hope that their will be a Mac application soon. I signed up for Climate Prediction before it even started sending out work units and did a lot of crunching before the transition to BOINC. I am participating in two other BOINC projects (Rosetta@Home and FightingAids@Home) that I think are worthwhile but I\'d really like to do more Climate Prediction work. I think there is still a lot of interest from Mac users and that we\'d be happy to help with getting the Mac application ready if we can.

I did a lot of crunching for CPDN until BOINC came along. I was really disappointed to learn that now that I have BOINC set up on my iMac and my MacBookPro. that I can\'t get run CPDN. I understand and appreciate the difficulties that the folks at Oxford are having and their need to focus on the most prevalent platforms. I\'d really like to see Apple become involved and fund this. I\'d be happy to send an e-mail requesting that but I don\'t know who it shoud go to. If Apple and other possible commericial sponsors don\'t come throught, maybe we shoujld fund this ourselves. I can\'t afford everything that might be needed but I\'d be happy to help. How about setting up something for us to contribute to?

Hi,

The problem for CPDN on Mac is not that they don\'t have the kit, although it was for a while, in that they only had a Mac Laptop. I sold them a G4 late last year, at a knockdown price I might add.

The problem lies with compiling the programme. It uses old Fortran, some of it 30 years old, from the Met office data base. The compiler that they needed to use was to expensive to buy, with no guarantee that it would work any better than the one they had.

In addition, they only have two people, looking after the project, Carl and Tolu. They were also developing the side projects for the BBC as well as looking after the normal stuff and I think trying to sort out the problems on the Mac version was probably taking up to much of their time.

So I think what they need is:-

1/ a top of the range MacPro 3. It will have to handle very large ammounts of data and not take forever to compile and re-compile as required. Say £5,000

2/ The latest compilers for IntelMacs plus other software needed. say £2,500

3/Funds to employ a Mac specalist for one year. Say £30.000

4/ Plus additional admin costs. Say £2.500

That\'s £40,000 total. I think that should do it. Of course funding to employ someone for an addtional year may be required later. But we don\'t have to worry about that yet.

Maybe the National Lottery Fund would help?

I did try to contact Apple about supporting the project, but nothing of course.

K.

6) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Restarting after a power failure (Message 9707)

I'd like to have my iMac set up so that the Climate Prediction model will start running again after a power failure. I have an UPS that has software to restart the computer when the power comes back up. It's easy to get Terminal going again but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the model running again without a little human intervention. I'd appreciate any suggestions you can give me.
7) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Model doesn't run (Message 7229)

I had been running the climate model successfully for about two months until my iMac G5 froze about a week and a half ago. I couldn't get it to reboot and finally cut the power. After that, I had a lot of trouble with slowness and freezes that seemed to happen for no reason. I'm running OS 10.3.6 and 512 MB of RAM. I noticed that I could not get the climate model to run even when there were no other applications open. When I opened Terminal and started BOINC I got:

I would wait for several hours but nothing would happen. I tried shutting down several times. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions. I zapped the PRAM. I ran Norton Disk Doctor from the Norton Utilities CD. It found a number of problems that I corrected. That seems to have helped the other problems but I still can't get the climate model to run. Should I download BOINC and/or the model again? I was well into Phase 2 so I hate to throw that away unless I really need to. I'd appreciate any advice you have.

Thanks, Neil. I still don't understand while the model stopped running (I didn't shut down or restart) but I think I have it running again.

With my current understanding of UNIX, typing commands in Terminal is a little like chanting magic spells. I don't particularly want to be a UNIX guru but I would like to understand what I'm doing and minimize unpleasant surprises. Can anyone point me toward a good guide for beginners?

I bought a new iMac G5 last week. I\'ve been using Macs for years but this is the first machine I\'ve had running OS X. I know almost nothing about UNIX but I did manage to get the model running. For the first three days (Oct. 7-9), it seemed to do well. It sent up a trickle approximately every 9 hours. It hasn\'t sent anything since then. I don\'t think I\'ve completed all the work I\'ve downloaded. I don\'t know what the problem is or what I should do next. I\'d appreciate any help you can give me.
