Marj, I don\'t have a laptop - or anything else - with an accelerometer, but what a truly amazing concept! I hope they can make it work usefully.

Thanks, Pooh Bear. I was trying from the website; I\'ll try via BOINC as soon as I\'ve got the OS and other stuff loaded.

I was asked recently if I would consider joining CPDN-Beta. I would be very happy to do this, and have a new computer ready to go on this project but I find that “account creation is currently disabled”. Will it be possible to join any time soon? If not, I’ll just load the new box with straight CPDN and carry on crunching. I\'m not able to post on the \"Beta\" message board as I don\'t have an account.

Sorry, I meant to mention that one. Yes, quite normal: fpops number began with 42.

Many thanks, Mo. In fact I have already hunted out the ones with low fpops numbers and edited them pre-emptively.

From MikeMars UK: “That\'s an interesting point, we could be seeing a lot more of these over the next few months ...”

Here’s another, which again crashed at 87%:

21/04/2008 14:46:54|climateprediction.net|Aborting task hadcm3istd_9am9_1920_160_15921938_5: exceeded CPU time limit 7618534.482759

The <rsc_fpops_bound> number again began with 21, which I’ve doubled; we’ll see how it goes.

Iain has identified the right model. It has always run on this computer; I haven’t noticed any abnormal benchmarks.

Mo.v: the model is stopped every day to allow a backup to be made; I stop it without reference to the checkpoint counter, so I guess it may have had extra processing to do. The number in <rsc_fpops_bound> began with 21 which I doubled to 42. (Douglas Adams again?)

Would this be one of the models you referred to?

No, just a boring old Athlon 4000. I\'ve become very enthusiastic about backups recently, having had several crashes in the last week or so. Perhaps \"paranoid\" would be a better word.

Checking my computers the other day, I found one model had crashed after 2276 hours of processing, approx. 87% complete.
I restored a backup from the previous day, but it crashed again at the same point, with the message “exceeded CPU time limit.” My thoughts were those of Douglas Adams’ bowl of petunias: “Oh no, not again!”
I managed to find a post from mo.v from 7/5/07 and followed the advice: find <rsc_fpops_bound> in Client_State.xml, and double the number found there. It was, as she said, “surprisingly easy”.
Well, the model is now processing well past 2276 hrs, and looking to complete in around two weeks. Many thanks, mo.v; petunias nothing.

Yes, external storage of backups is clearly the way forward. We have severe storms predicted for tonight, so in the meantime I think I will close everything down before I go to bed!

Thanks to all for the advice.

I try to run “clean machines” and take backups regularly. Last Friday we had severe gales, and there was a power outage during the night which was well beyond the capacity of my UPS to handle. In the morning, all the computers rebooted, except for one of my Quad 6600’s. BSOD, and a complete refusal to let me access my backups. My only recourse was to repartition/reformat/reload everything. I’ve run a full CHKDSK, and run Prime95 for 24hrs, no problems there. So I guess this is just to say sorry, guys, I’ve trashed four of your models.

On a lighter note, can I suggest that when your birthday comes around you ask for an Uninterruptable Power Supply? Sure, it wouldn\'t handle a major power outage caused by a careless man with a digger, but the outages we get in rural Wales are of 10-15 seconds only, and the expense greatly outweighs the need to re-boot a rack full of computers . . . .

Geophi, Mike, thanks for your comments. CPU_Z reports core speed 2211MHz, multiplier x11. The CPU is cool to the touch.
A second Athlon 4200 dual-core machine runs at 4+ s/Ts, CPU_Z reports core speed 1100MHz (BIOS reports twice that) x5.
I’m right at the edge of my knowledge here, is it time for a M/B and processor upgrade?

I’ve had a lot of success recently in bringing down my sec/Ts by substantially upping the RAM on some of my slower machines; an Athlon 3800 now runs at 2.08 sec/Ts with 2GB RAM. Until today: my Athlon 4200 dual-core runs at 5+ sec/Ts despite increasing RAM from 1GB to 3GB. The RAM checks out with Prime95; have I missed something, or do I expect too much?

I’ve been lurking on the message boards for a while now, and I feel sure I should know the answer to my problem, but can’t find a relevant thread. I shall be away for much of September, and I see that several of my computers will run out of work during this period. I have a dial-up connection, and nobody who will be here in my absence will have the remotest interest in bringing computers from the garage to the house to upload finished work and download a new work-unit. Can I therefore force a download of a “spare” work-unit to keep things running while I’m away? I can see how to prevent download of new work, but not the reverse. Help gratefully received.

&gt; Also happening with 4.05. I've checked sched_request.xml and sched_reply.xml
&gt; on my systems and the trickles are being acknowledged by the server but not
&gt; being updated on my account page. Which is exactly the same symptoms as I had
&gt; for the validator problems at the start of the week.
&gt;
&gt; Interesting thing is that one of my models finished this morning. It's status
&gt; information and completion date have been updated but it's final trickle and
&gt; phase 3 &amp; completion graphs have yet to appear (<a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=142009"&gt;here</a>).
