1) Message boards : Number crunching : Upload problem (Message 37326)
Posted 23 Jun 2009 by old_user22652
Post:
"The project no longer uses any of the servers in Berne. This outsourcing ended after the 2005 incident."

Les, this is intriguing. I think maybe I was away doing other projects in 2005 and not reading the CPDN boards, or else I'm
just too old to remember.

If you have the time/inclination to tell us, whatever happened in 2005?

John.

Thanks, Iain. It's clear now - fingers crossed for a speedy return of the server, then.

A few weeks ago, the CPDN server was down for several days so I loaded a pile of Einstein models onto my Quad 9550. (What a delight - handfuls of models completing every 24hrs. No wonder folk coming to CPDN for the first time question the run-time of CPDN models!)

But wouldn't you know it, the Einstein server then took a dive also. As you know, Einstein rigidly enforces completion dates - 7 days, from memory - but mindful of this, they were able to extend the completion dates to allow crunchers to upload completed models after repairs to the server.

Would this simply not be possible with CPDN?

4) Questions and Answers : Windows : MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error. (Message 37139)

Post:
Thanks, Hagar. I saw the Wiki entry on MCE errors, and didn't like the bit about "they often indicate a long-term problem of a
general nature."!

I will certainly try the tests you suggest, but it is beginning to look as tho' I'm heading for an upgrade.

5) Questions and Answers : Windows : MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error. (Message 37132)
Posted 10 Jun 2009 by old_user22652
Post:
I hope this post is not inappropriate in this area. One of my Quad 6600's (E30) recently began throwing up Blue Screens of Death, with the MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error. At least 2 Mid-Holo's have been lost to this problem. While I'm quite happy to swap boards/discs in the computer, the software side of things is a complete mystery to me, so I put the error message into a Well Known Search Engine, and found it to be fairly non-specific.

I cleaned out the gunge from inside the box, both literally with an air-jet to the cooling fins, and metaphorically with a full CHKDSK (which found some errors) then finally a repartition/reformat/reload everything, together with a lengthy run of Prime 95.(No errors).

All has been well now for a week or so, but the problem has returned. Any ideas?

Running MH models, I get 0.86 sec/TS consistently with my various Intel E8400\'s, each with 2GB RAM. If you would agree to \"unhide\" your computers on your preferences page, the rest of us could make comparisons!

Help, please. Before retirement, my professional life was spent in a galaxy far, far away, but now I am trying to get to grips with the
technicalities of CPDN models; for me the learning curve is steep indeed.

On my computer designated E100, a mid-holo model resultid 8225658 turned \"blue\" and the backup failed at the same point,
so I ditched it.

The pressure and temperature graphs look pretty much OK; can I find any more info as to why the model crashed?

Any help gratefully received.

Is it possible that there might in future be a very simple word-processing facility in the \"messages\" tab of BoincManager? I have in mind something like \"This model turned IceWorld at \"\" percent; restored to <Backup Date> ? That would save me from maintaining a (small) pile of paper notes alongside the computer.

Yes, Mo. Same email address, but as you say the credits haven\'t appeared on the main board. Not too concerned.

Yes, it is quite easy. Stop your CPDN model and make a backup to an external disc, or USB stick or whatever.

Install Win XP. I am sure you know this already, but when installing XP, take the opportunity of re-partitioning the disc prior to installation, so that it is a really clean install.

Reload your BOINC files. Restart. Everything will run just fine.

Model hadcm3ivolc_12b3_2000_80_06001697_2 completed overnight. Disc usage is now down to ~500MB, so the .nc files have been cleaned up at last, and the backup time is again down to seconds. I\'m glad to see the back of them.

A hadcm v 6.02 completed overnight. I hadn\'t cleaned out the .nc files as suggested by mo.v and others; the computer is dedicated to CPDN and there was plenty of disc-space. The backup times were becoming slightly alarming, and backing up the backups to an external disc was taking in excess of 2 hrs!

However, I notice that the disc-usage has dropped from approx 6.5GB to 3.07GB, so it looks as though the model has taken its .nc files with it. I will be uploading the final .zip when the server comes back online.

Edit/ The disc usage is still high because there is another v 6.02 running; when this completes tomorrow, I am expecting the disc-usage to drop again.

Post:
There are two things I would like to know about credits.

1) When the \"credit update\" program is run - the new figures appear at approx 08.30 UK time - are the updates based on trickles received up to that moment, or has a \"snapshot\" been taken some time previously?

2) Is there a \"terminal bonus\" for completed models, or is the final .zip upload simply equal to the previous ones?

I changed active-frac late last night, but still received the same error messages. However, come trickle-up time this morning, a new model came down and is now running.

So, spot-on as usual! Many thanks for your reply.

I have two mid-holo models,hadsm3mh_ki7e_006002800_4 and
hadsm3mh_kj33_006003005_8 which are both due to complete very soon.

I noticed there was no model ready to take over, so ran Projects/Update. Result:

\"Requesting 268757 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks

climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work sent

you have selected. Please check your settings on the web site.
climateprediction.net|Message from server: (won\'t finish in time) Computer on 100.0% of time
BOINC on 4.4% of that.

No work available? Plenty shown.

Check website settings? Did. Set for Mid-holocene models.

Won\'t finish in time? Deadline is 1 yr away.

BOINC is on 4.4% of time? Nearer 99%.

¿Que pasa?

16) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Boinc 6.2.19 (Message 35386)
Posted 28 Oct 2008 by old_user22652
Post:
I have upgraded quite a few of my computers to ver 6.2.19 from 5.10.45: no real problems. BUT: on restarting the models after backup/reboot, the BOINC window comes up severely truncated both horizontally and vertically. Of course it isn\'t a problem to open the window to full size, but why does it need to be that way? Have I missed a setting to change this, or can something be done to correct this in future versions?

Post:

Will I live this long?

Probably, yes! This isn\'t atypical for a CPDN workunit, but there are shorter ones available, set on your \"preferences\" page. My Intel duo 8400 processors go through the longer units in about 1650 hrs.

Also, there is a great sense of satisfaction in completing a unit after that length of time.
