1) Questions and Answers : Windows : All Port Scan Attack (Message 11465)
Posted 29 Mar 2005 by old_user21650
Post:
Hi, all -

I'm running Microsoft ISA 2004 as a proxy server and firewall at home. As of yesterday, I began receiving alerts from the firewall about All Port Scan attacks from 163.1.13.17. I used SamSpade to see where that address was, and found out the following:

climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk = [ 163.1.13.17 ]
Domain:
ox.ac.uk
Registered For:
University of Oxford
Registered By:
JANET
Servers:
dns0.ox.ac.uk
dns1.ox.ac.uk
dns2.ox.ac.uk
ns2.ja.net

Anyone else seeing port scans from ClimatePrediction's network?
2) Questions and Answers : Windows : ISA 2000/2004 Firewall Client Proxy incompatibility (Message 5759)

&gt; Download the final version from <a> href="http://www.proxomitron.info/"&gt;here</a> and install it. Next configure
&gt; it with your proxy server info, userid &amp; password (you'll need to
&gt; right-click on the proxy configuration to enter uid/pwd). Make sure that the
&gt; Proxomitron is automatically started at start-up.
&gt;
&gt; Once the Proxomitron is configured and running, set BOINC proxy information to
&gt; 1.0.0.127 port 8080, then all communication will go through the Proxomitron.
&gt; Any other apps that don't support proxy authentication (e.g. Ad-aware) can
&gt; also use the Proxomitron.
&gt;
&gt;

Thanks! :-)
3) Questions and Answers : Windows : ISA 2000/2004 Firewall Client Proxy incompatibility (Message 5650)

Post:
FYI - on ISA 2000 &amp; 2004, BOINC will not communicate if authentication is required - even if the ISA Firewall client is installed and all traffic is permitted. :-(

Using the authentication mechanism in BOINC didn't help. (Don't even know if it's SOCKS 4 or 5)

I believe I need to configure that particular application with information about protocol/port usage so I can configure the Firewall client. Anybody got that?

Work-around - Don't use the Proxy. However, this assumes that the ISA server is NOT the only way you have to access the Internet. Otherwise you'll need an authentication fix or create a specific entry for the BOINC application.

How do you set up the program for all user AND individual users? I have a similar problem on a PIII using XP at home, and could swear I just took the default installation parameters...
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : boinc unresponsive on dual xeon system (Message 5048)

Yeah, there's a known problem with dual processors (physical or logical). I've experienced it, too. If there's insufficient work for a project to use 2 processors, the client and server will hang until there is.

Kill BOINC, change your general settings in all projects to limit the processing to 1 CPU. Restart BOINC - things should run fine, and it should download work for all your projects.

Once there's enough work to keep both processors busy for all projects, you can change your general preferences back to 2 processors, then "update" the projects from the Projects tab using the right-click menu. It should download additional WU's for you at that time.

That should do it - worst-case scenario, you may have to set your CPU's to 1 and reinstall BOINC. (Keep track of your project id if you do this, of course!)

Good luck...

Yeah, the socket error happens when BOINC is already running and you try to start another copy.
7) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 4.09 gui hang after upgrade (Message 5035)

Not a lot to go on, but I think your a P4 3.2 Ghz CPU is one of those that appear to the system as two logical processors. Try changing your general preferences to 1 CPU and reinstall BOINC 4.9.

There's a known bug with dual processors (logical or physical) where BOINC will hang if there's not enough work in the project to keep two processors busy.
8) Questions and Answers : Windows : After a reboot CP will not start (Message 5034)

Change your general prefences to 1 CPU instead of 2, then restart BOINC. That should fix the problem. When you have an extra WU stored up, you can go back to 2 CPU's.

It's a known bug in BOINC, I encountered it myself - it only happens when a project doesn't have enough WU's to keep a dual CPU (physical or logical) system busy.
9) Questions and Answers : Windows : Boinc_gui.exe 4.09 hangs when there are WUs less than free CPUs. (Message 5033)

Yes, I had this problem, too - I have two systems with two physical CPU's. It's a known bug, and happens when there isn't enough work for both CPU's to do from a given project.

Change your general preferences to use 1 CPU only, and then stop/restart BOINC. Once you have enough WU's waiting to keep your two logical CPU's going, you can go ahead and return to using 2 CPU's.

This happened with me mostly because of the SETI project - they've just started up and were/are having scheduler problems.

FYI, the manual fix given by Thyme worked fine - thanks. I guess I just don't have much patience at times... (lol)

It'll be nice when it works as designed, though.

&gt; Hi Jim,
&gt;
&gt; There's definitely a problem with the way venue changes are propogated down to
&gt; computers when you do a project update. If I've got the time I'm going to dig
&gt; into the BOINC source code to try to work out what's happening, but I've
&gt; worked out that it's because the server end doesn't send host details in its
&gt; reply to the update request.
&gt;
&gt; You could force the venue change by stopping BOINC and manually editing
&gt; client_state.xml to add the following line before the last one (replacing the
&gt; {} with angled brackets):
&gt;
&gt; {host_venue}work{/host_venue}
&gt;
&gt; <a href="http://www.teampicard.net"><img> src="http://www.teampicard.net/templates/fisubice/images/phpbb2_logo.jpg"&gt;</a><a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/team_display.php?teamid=3"&gt;Join
&gt; us here</a>
&gt;

Thanks - I'll sit tight for a bit and see if the above permanent fixes work. If I get impatient, I'll go with the manual edit. :-)

Not being addressed on the SETI board, so I figured I\'d try here... since it happens on both projects.

When I assign \"Work\" as a location to one of my systems, it reverts back to \"Home\" after a BOINC update. This is a problem for me because I want to use different profiles.

I have some servers I\'m planning on running CP on, but I need to restrict the processing to \"off-hours\" only so it doesn\'t impact my users during normal usage times. The rest of the profiles will be running 7x24.

Anyone know when this will be fixed?
