I was gonna' edit my earlier post, but decided to just post another. When running DC projects on a P4, you can easily spot TM1 throttling by settting up your tskmgr to show both cpu usage & kernal usage, and knowing what to look for.

If you're interested, post here, & I'll respond w/the details.

"ThrottleWatch" should be all you need, but I don't use it since I'm pretty good at spotting thermal throttling on the tskmgr.

FWIW - I see you're running a Northie, which is a destop P4. AFAIK, CPU-Z will NOT detect TM1 thermal throttling in a desktop P4. I know it doesn't in my desktop P4's.

<a href="http://www.panopsys.com/throttlewatch.php">Panopsys' "ThrottleWatch"</a> is what you want, when checking for P4 desktop TM1 throttling.

&gt; Restarted Seti Driver so it won't go dry.

I just returned from a 3 day CPDN BOINC hiatus, where I was running SETI Classic exclusively. Now upon my return, I'm having the exact same problem: "No Work From Project" followed by the ubiquitous "Deferring communication..."!

Darn it!

&gt; &gt; This was somewhat of an issue for me, since I've got 6 Hyperthreaded
&gt; P4's
&gt; &gt; running a total of 12 models. This means I never have a machine that's
&gt; not
&gt; &gt; somewhere in mid-run, due to 2 concurrent runs per cpu. Now I feel
&gt; somewhat
&gt; &gt; relieved that there shouldn't be any additional probs involved by having
&gt; to
&gt; &gt; manually replace models in mid-run status.
&gt;
&gt;
&gt; Strat,
&gt;
&gt; I have 4 like that my ownself, but the, save folder, un-install 4.19, install
&gt; 4.25 worked fine, no models aborted on any machine and several were in the
&gt; VERY late stages ...
&gt;
&gt; As a matter of factt I think two of them just completed and I have 3 more in
&gt; the next week.
&gt;
&gt; Even better news for me is that the new motherboard I put into one of my
&gt; "shakey" machines will now allow me to run all projects on all machines again.
&gt; :)

Thanks for the reply. Now I feel even more confident!

BTW - Have you noticed any differences in crunching time (I know this can be difficult to quantify/ascertain)???

Well, after reading this thread I feel a little better concerning the upgrade. Up 'till now I wasn't sure if a mid-run model folder needed to be Copied/Saved/Replaced. Apparently it doesn't require replacement, if all goes as expected.

This was somewhat of an issue for me, since I've got 6 Hyperthreaded P4's running a total of 12 models. This means I never have a machine that's not somewhere in mid-run, due to 2 concurrent runs per cpu. Now I feel somewhat relieved that there shouldn't be any additional probs involved by having to manually replace models in mid-run status.

Nice find.

Thx, Les.

&gt; wonder what they know?), will post notes for us all. Hint, Hint.
&gt;

Hi Les -

So I take it the new BOINC core client (4.25) also includes a change in the CPDN client???

Also, has there really been some proj peeps in NZ, or are you just joking around???

It's 2:00A here in Chicago, so I'm half asleep (guess you could say I'm 'Casey Jones' at the keyboard!) ;-)

I get the feeling these will become perennial questions!!!

And sorry, Peter, but unfortunately I can't answer your questions. I tend to wait several weeks, or more, before an upgrade, 'cuz I'm too chicken to muck up my little farm, until I see a new build has some compelling reason to upgrade, and has proven itself robust.

&gt; yes I restarted with the same WU. It showed that I had completed about 250+
&gt; hours of work but had 0.00% completed. currently it has wworked its way back
&gt; up to around 5%. When it restarted it showed a completion time of aroun
&gt; 20,000 hours. I attributed this to me having 0% done and 250 hours of time
&gt; worked. it has come down greatly since that time. I can onnly assume that
&gt; some file associated with the trickles or the WU were altered showing that I
&gt; had not completed any work.
&gt;

FWIW -

When you hit the point in the model where the crash occured, you will once again start receiving additional credit for your trickles (i.e., ~250+ machine hours into the model).

&gt; &gt; We'll never know for sure now.
&gt;
&gt; Actually, my PCs using v4.19 uploaded fine, but could not send the
&gt; trickles...and then I could not connect to the server...go and figure:)
&gt;
&gt; Mind you, I be curious if v4.13 behaved the same...anyone?
&gt;

Hmmm...are you on dial-up? I upgraded 6 machines (12 models total) from 4.13 to 4.19, &amp; everything went super smoothly, w/o any probs at all (except for that temporarilly downed Oxford upload server). Oh yeah...OS is WinXPro-Sp2.

Just to add -

I seem to recall Linux, until just recently, having issues both writing &amp; reading reliably to shared NTFS files. IIRC, Linux could either read or write to NTFS, but not both, reliably. So Linux &amp; Windoze OS shared files were recommended to be formatted as DOS.

I think this has been finally addressed in one or two 'cutting edge' distros, either just released, or soon to be RC's.

FWIW -

I believe I saw a small difference in slightly longer S/TS occuring around a month, or so, ago, several weeks before I upgraded 4.13 ---&gt;4.19. It was a very small difference, and fell w/i the oft quoted +/- 5% margin of difference. I had 12 models running at the time, &amp; it seemed all the new ones were running ~5%, or so, slower, than the preceeding model, on any specific machine. I thought about posting this, but it didn't really seem important, or easy quantifiable, either. It was just was something I casually "thought" I noticed, but didn't have "hard" numbers. I didn't think of it again, 'till I saw this thread.

I'm pretty sure it started before my 4.19 upgrade.

I wish I kept more exact records, or could be more specific. I just recall thinking "Hmmm...I've run into a series of slightly slower models".

Like I said, FWIW. My opinion is free - You get exactly what you've paid for! ;-)

Yeah, bed-warmers can seem pretty innocent &amp; innocuous, but they sure have a lot of subtle weapons at thier disposal when angered, not the least of which, you described in your second sentence. 'Course, I'm speaking of the "Venus" versions of the bed-warmer, which is my preference. Women usually seem to prefer the "Mars" versions, and ironically, also cliam to often have a misundrstanding of how thier bed-warmer works.

Though, I believe it's possible they may understand more than they let on.
