1) Message boards : Number crunching : ANOTHER UPLOAD PROBLEM (Message 49478)

OK, given the regular space issue, doing away with trickles for these 4 day results might be worth considering, to include the bandwidth savings on the volunteers side too. Trickle every 6 hours or so, 36.4mb, 89 hours total computing, is 89 / 6 * 36.4 = 539Mb per task. What's retained at the end, just the final zip? If so, maybe to think harder about.

Bit puzzled about trickles and eot zips. Like others having upload issues for days, but noticed there to be 2 36+mb zips sitting in upload

Got 2 tasks running with exactly the same job names received during the night, i.e. far from complete:

climateprediction.net 6.09 hadam3p_eu hadam3p_eu_i3j1_2013_1_008769009_1 09:21:34 (09:16:24) 99,08 16,134 03d,09:36:34 346d,19:45:10 7/1/2014 1:41:30 AM [58] 00:03:18 Running 2750123 Home 154.33 MB 156.87 MB

Looking in the job trickle detail see only 1 listed for each:

01 Jul 2014 05:50:30 1328724 16697420 hadam3p_eu_i36j_2013_1_008768559_1 1 11,616 17,420 1.4997

Before I thought that the trickles were just small snippets and the zip only produced at end of task, thus these 36.4Mb uploads not making sense? They finally seem to be going, albeit slow at just 45Kbps and after finishing nothing web-side indicates these task got something special, still only 1 trickle from hours before.

3) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit updates? (Message 49414)

Post:
As for credit itself, the competing view is for those wanting to compete. Credit is the only measure we have for cross project contribution measure. Mind you, if exports are not run either, how can one compare? On CPDN your account it shows 77k credit, but on the bottom section summary it shows as having 34k, RAC zero. Surely I'm missing something.

Not good if this is not addressed timely, indeed the last credit I see given is of June 2, but then work dried up for a while, seemingly somewhere between June 1 and June 18 when new work was received, with CPDN actually having a work share of greater than zero at this time, all others defined 0, acting as backup. Either way, no RAC and think that's a value computed over 60 days.

Running the credit script may well be the least important priority for the support crew, and it may not be that important for the hardcore regular contributors to these message boards. However, credit is an important feedback for ordinary participants running climateprediction on their computer, perhaps in conjunction with other BOINC projects.

When I see the climateprediction credit flatline (which for me has been going on since 2nd June) it's discouraging. I'm no longer sure if I'm contributing, and I'm also not sure how the lack of credit is affecting how BOINC calculates the ratio of work between projects: will BOINC decide that as I've apparently done no work on climateprediction recently I must be in need of many more workunits? Maybe not - it might calculate in a different way. But I don't know.

The impression I get from this (and from the weird way in which the longest workunits have the shortest deadlines) is that the project is under-resourced or badly structured. As I say, it's discouraging.

Graham

The funny in this is, that before the share was computed on time spend, then this credit new approach came along, discovery was made that credit gets assigned with [large] delay and thus work shares would not be balanced [with block processing per project anyway taking a longer time]. The base design would have addressed the excessive credit awarders too, presuming cpu and gpu are considered 2 different resources, then the client starts computing it's own credit, and we're in effect back to pure time share at client side. Lol.

Yes, got one 22 day job with 90 day deadline and 7 more euros done in 80 hours and due in 365 days. Can you follow? Mind you the long job is a _4 copy, maybe Miles & Co are now finally in a rush to get a result off this full coupled ocean model and conclude that experiment?

This is neither a question of the 42 answer order, but is there any purpose in trickling at all? Running 8 euro models concurrent on one machine and they're well into the 60th hour, another 30 projected to go, and no credits have appeared though the client log in leaps and bounds shows intermediate results are being uploaded, sometimes with hourly interval, sometimes a multi-hour break and then another hourly series. Here's one trickle log:

Not that credit interests me all too much, but if there's a system, why does it appear to be so heckish inconsistent? The below still shows as recent results, one 1.3 million seconds getting 4.9k and another 1.3 million getting 7.1k. The device runs locked in on 3.7ghz, not like it's crawling on one and racing on the next.

Was ready to get a new model, but under Linux as that is my main crunching platform since a while. Since I don't want more than one model, have to be there when work is fetched except, theres none it seems, even when selecting all and the "if there is no work..." none is coming down. Is there none for Linux presently?

"Completed", a final 1366KB zip file uploaded and taking the 6748 total credit granted, 68 trickles were uploaded and the task marked completed. The FAQs (outdated?) say there should be 72 trickles, which equates exactly to 7145 credit. If 4 trickles went missing it means that in the 4 years, to the day exactly that I've tried to complete even a single model, none (17) ended up correctly. Oh well.

Okay, I'll finish it up, but still would appreciate to understand in what way these small variations add to understanding as when different CPUs/OSs generates random variation... if the same model is run twice on the same computer will it be identical or not I wonder :o|

If there is a way to change the OP title to signify conclusion, I'll do that.

edit: seems time limited so if the admin can insert RESOLVED] in OP title it may sink.

My client turned into High Priority for the below task, 3rd from top, after not having crunched with this computer under Windows for months. When looking at the header section it comes across as a serious waste of time and electricity. 3 Copies already completed successfully the question being: Should this task be cut short, assuming all results produce a matching simulation if run to completion, or at least not having meaningfull differences.

For now, I've put this task back in stasis awaiting clarification.

I\'ve not many credits going for this project because time and again the model goes and breaks off

Your computers are hidden so we can\'t see the failed Models and their error messages. If you make the machines visible, perhaps we can help you solve the problem(s).
That\'s the way they are going to remain. I know what each case was caused by but the longest one that ran 1681 hours, but am fairly sure it was file corruption on a disk progressively going up the famous creek.

In the backup / restore procedures there are a number of items I may have overlooked:

1. What if the unattended client already communicated back to CPDN that the model crashed?
2. How do you stop CPDN to communicate a \'crash\' message on a multiproject / multicore system? Suspend networking altogether? But then,
3. Running the projects dry takes time on a 4 core, particular if there is a few days buffered work and some projects like QMC running day-long models. Eventually the Result upload has to be done. How to be sure the bad CPDN project does not \'tell\' things went bad on the first internet connection?

One thing I don\'t/won\'t engage in is meddling in the client_state.xml

The wiki suffers from tunnel vision and is long behind on present crunching conditions. Partial quotation:
#5 We don\'t want BOINC to contact other projects with information about runs that were in progress at the time of the backup but have since been completed, so:

1. Disconnect internet
2. Start BOINC and detach all projects except ClimatePrediction.net.
3. Reconnect internet

#5 Finish the Climateprediction.net Work Unit

Is this a serious proposition, the present model 69 hours done and 330 hours to go on a multicore? Maybe CPDN should recommend to only participate with single core machines (ancient, slow, disproportional amount of electricity use).

Don\'t want to be a PITA, but the solution could be more of the 21st century.

cheers

We have all our bad hair days. I\'ve not many credits going for this project because time and again the model goes and breaks off, be it at 100 hours or 1681 hours as one did. Make it robust and fix it so it will be able to restore without the hoopla stuff contributors have to go thru. Also fix the due date issue and set it to something that will cause BOINC not to go into a Earliest Deadline First when that \'fictitious\' deadline is approaching.

Credit is awarded for each Model year, 25920 Time Steps, 0.625%. After the report is sent home, a daily batch run sorts it and adds credit to your account.

Be sure to stop the Model and boinc from time to time and make a backup of the entire folder to protect your investment.

Still not a \'set and forget\' project and am being sure that I wont be doing \'back up\' for lack of proper recovery routines if something goes wrong with a model. Is CPDN planning to do anything in development with Berkeley to fix this problem? About 6 crashed models so far as backing up and restoring means that other project time shares and work are being sacrificed!

Regarding mail versus forum postings for help:

Forum postings are usually the best way to go, because everyone can look at the question and offer advice. I tried to do email support for a bit but gave up because it\'s so much harder when people like Les, Mo, Marj, Crandles, AstroWX and everyone else aren\'t there to pitch in with advice. Much quicker to get a response on the forum as well (a few minutes versus a day or two).

Well what\'s the point.... I can post here so i found out by coincidence, but not on the main one as noted in my original post ;>)

@DJstarfox,

I understand that the development of BOINC is going in that direction of catering for SMP... was in the same 5gb message.

Thnks Les,

As for the missing log entries in the Msgtab, fumbled around with the log flags switching them on and off, made backup, reinstalled 5.10.13 and now they show, but beats me why as comparing the flags they are now entirely the same as before the reinstall.... my French got excersized today :O

There ARE messages in the log!
They look like this:
2006-12-17 01:23:59 [climateprediction.net] Sending scheduler request to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi
2006-12-17 01:23:59 [climateprediction.net] Reason: To send trickle-up message
2006-12-17 01:23:59 [climateprediction.net] Note: not requesting new work or reporting results
2006-12-17 01:24:19 [climateprediction.net] Scheduler request to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded

And, for the record, the messages are archived in the BOINC folder as follows:
stdoutdae.txt contains ALL of the messages, and
stderrdae.txt contains only the error messages.

******************

Trickle_up files appear in the climateprediction.net folder, on about 3rd December of each year.
They do NOT appear in the Transfers tab, and are uploaded in seconds, so you may not see them appear in the folder unless you\'re watching at the exact right time, or you keep the Network option turned off.

If you\'re watching the Show graphics globe at the right time, you can also see a message about the yearly data being collected.

Okay Les, thanks and u reminded me of posts on the BOINC developers forum where certain message stored in the stdoutdae.txt file but not all showing in the Message Tab. Never seen the trickle entries there under any version of BOINC 5.4, 5.8 and now 5.10.13, English language instance, but indeed they are in the disk stored archive.... cumbersome. At several times when crunching longer off line I did see a Zip file appear in the Transfer tab of about 5mb. Is there a rule on the number of trickles/years completed for that to happen (these are surely the ones needed and not the credit trickles)?

Separate question.... why can I post in this Q&A forum but not the big one (why are there 2 anyway?). Send mails, but like what I hear from others, the responsiveness to support mails is none or rather negatively toned. The question i had included was also the ambiguous postings of news inferring that parts of models are being send out again due manco.... Well I\'ve only reached 1985 starting Dec.06 with this WU, so is this a waste and should i ditch - ?

Now the scary bit.... read of models needing 5gb RAM/VM in future releases.... is that serious?

Feel free to split up this post and put them in separate topics.... seems this thread is all over the place.

cheers

How / where in the client (5.10.13) can one see if a trickle up is ready to be send and how many? There\'s not a trace in the message logs. FTM i check BOINCView where the project tab says one is ready, but really it would be nice if it created an actual log entry in the client.

As it says in the previous post, 5.6.* and later.
The 5.6 versions were removed soon after being issued, and the replacement, 5.8.* is due out Any Day Now.

The 5.8.0 has been there for a few weeks now and the throttle is still working on basis of seconds. E.g. 75% throttle will make it run 3 seconds and pause 1 second. The experience u have to judge for yourself.
