1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : AM3P EU Graphics are missing all text (Message 44536)

Post:
I was updating my linux O.S. and installed linux mint 13 cinnamon 64 bit (I do not like the new ubuntu unity interface). When installed bionc and ran CPDN I had no Graphics at all well coming upon this thread I slowly managed to get graphics but no text, like the first post with some more persistence I got that as well. Its thanks to this thread that it's working all right now, I could not find the info any where else. Perhaps this thread should be turned into a sticky.

Greg I've calmed down now but I was annoyed.
I had noticed that I had 3 completed models with downloads stuck in the transfer tab I do not check this often.
I quickly realised it due to a pnw running under linux with the handler problem. Edited the client_state.xml file which solved the problem but took hours off download. Any when reported completed I got in the messages so I went to my account to see if they were completed and left me confused.

Those people who feel that this new message means that they're wasting their time should stop crunching climate models, leave the project, and not come back!

I have crunched this project since the BBC days but if this the new attitude I will take your advice as the messages are no longer in plain English.
I have had very few failures and most have been successful and put up with some of the projects problems.

I have had the same.
when I look tasks instead of saying "completed" get "No Resubmission" I get the feeling I am completely wasting my computer time this can be seen on other work units.

Thanks Greg
Managed to upload files after you pointed out the error
Was trying to find a missing file did not think of a spelling error although this had been mentioned on these forums.
Now all uploaded and I can now get some peace and not fret over a failed model.
Perhaps we should have a wip round to buy Oxford a spell checker!

I just found one of my other computers is running a "pnw" job and has no problems in uploading.
Response good from "url".
Now got 9 monthly uploads stuck with "Project file upload handler is missing".
Looks like something went wrong with original download and might have to abort this one which I will hate doing as I do not like loosing models.

10) Message boards : Number crunching : FAMOUS SUCCESS/FAILURE RATIO (Message 40352)
Posted 11 Aug 2010 by DaveG27
Post:
I have so far 21 successes's 10 failures all "negative theta",6 in progress ,4 waiting to run(reserve supply because of down load problems).
As failures run for a shorter time this will skew the results in the short term and failures will appear higher than they actually are and a true ratio will become apparent over the longer term.
Two of my m/c's run linux and one windows 7 failure rates seem about the same.
When checking out the others in w.u. of failed models I was surprised by the differences on windows system between Xp,vista and 7 whether it failed or not and how far it got one would expect them all to fail at the same point which they generally did when running the same o.s.
Two of the w.u.'s had a lot of linux's one they all failed at the same point the other they were all different (you can't win)
Perhaps more research needs to be done on this to see if it is true or not and not just a coincidence on the ones I looked at.

Checked my HadAM3P workunits this morning one of which diplayed an ice world in the graphics which was very slow? which I did not expect.
Had to reboot computer because of updates, the model then showed compution error.
It had send up two trickles but no credit given.
Task I.D.
Two other models in that work unit show sucess
Work Unit
Perhaps its linux thingy.
The other model on that computer is O.K.

When I had 3 HadAM3P\'s running simultaneously on a quad and a HadCM3 on the other core they trickled at 9.5s/ts when I changed it to 1 HadAM3P, 1 HadCM3 and 2 other projects it speed ed up to 4.7s/ts I also worked out the HadCM3 was running 30-40% slower with 3 HadAM3P.

In W.U. 6176172 there where 2 more finisher\'s one of which was a Intel/Vista which is most similar to XP.
W.U. 6176166 has also 5 finishers 3 - Intel/XP. 1 - Intel/Linux 1 - AMD/Linux
3 Intel/XP very similar Intel/Linux slightly different to AMD/Linux which are both slightly different to the other 3

The question of AMD vs Intel & Linux vs Windows I have been doing a little research and came up with this . I found two W.U. that will fit the bill (Found them surprisingly quickly this time). I have provided links to their P3 temperature graphs.
Because difference is small its best to view them like this. Open three new tabs and load one of the three graphs into each tab. You can the switch between tabs to see the difference as you switch (Works in FireFox presumably it works in IE)

AMD vs Intel W.U. 6176174 all Windows XP
Task
7609806 AMD comp. 834511
7609800 Intel comp. 206022
7609801 Intel comp. 673899

Windows XP vs Linux W.U. 6176172 all Intel
Task
7609778 Linux comp. 890788
7609779 XP comp. 903134
7609777 XP comp. 878045

Graph for 7969311 is slightly different to the other 2 which are identical.
Tip
If you load only the graph\'s into 3 different tab\'s and flick between the tabs you quickly see the differences. Works on Firefox I assume it works for other browsers too?

I have found though, if you use the 64-bit version of ubuntu, the graphics will appear transparent

I had this problem with 64bit Ubuntu I came across a cure. If you goto System>Prefrences>Appearence then under the Visual Effects tab select none the problem will go away but of course you lose some visual effects.
I also just discovered Ubuntu will throttle back the clock speed for CPDN and will severely effect the completion time I have a thread about it on th main CPDN forum

18) Message boards : Number crunching : First phase of migration of BBC/CCE to cpdn and standard version of boinc (Message 26287)
Posted 22 Jan 2007 by DaveG27
Post:
The BBC people are not familiar with how things are done outside of their isolated world, in spite of the mods constantly explaining.
And we are still having problems explaining to them how to attach to a second project.

I agree with this, having crunched since the start only on the BBC I saw how things were going to come to and end in the new year and decided to move one of my computers over to this side last November.
The other crunchers seem reluctant to dip their too into the water and make the move and just complain about it. A lot of them never visit the boards and only now finding out about it when they can not get new models be come perplexed and not sure what to do.
Part of the trouble is the BBC way made it easy to download and changing to the BOINC way is strange. I myself had a little trouble especially the with CPID. And that was a thing completely new to me and did not no it existed.
A lot of BBCer’s are unaware of the existence of BOINCStats although I was aware of them. So they think they going to lose all of their credits.
So Its good on people like Carl and the mods trying to make it easier for them but its going to be an up hill struggle.
