1) Message boards : Number crunching : Late November batch of Windows work (Message 53016)
Posted 4 Dec 2015 by UXJnHL
Post:
How often do these tasks checkpoint? Looking at the task running now, it seems it's been over 50 minutes of CPU time since the last checkpoint.

All CPDN models checkpoint at fixed points in the calculation. For these models it's at the end of each model day, with trickles and uploads being made every 30 model days.

My 15 has a checkpoint interval of just under 50 minutes and for the Q6600 it's around 70 minutes.

Cheers, thanks for the reply!

4) Questions and Answers : Windows : No \"finished file\" error (Message 27083)
Posted 26 Feb 2007 by UXJnHL
Post:
the \"no finished file\" message is a trivial warning as others have noticed.

On the good side, the new cpdn we\'re beta testing uses a lot less file I/O and I think is a lot less prone to these errors. I was running cpdn and backing up my hard drive to a firewire drive (200GB), doing other stuff, running a virus & spyware scan, and the model was fine (the hard drive light was solid red for two hours).

Could the problem also have been that the virus scan was running (this hasn;t crashed my model before) AND that I was playing World of Warcraft, AND uploading using azureus? (ALl of them were very Hard-Drive related.)

If you want to reduce them, you could try updating to BOINC v5.8.14 ...

Where do you find this download?

Go to the normal BOINC download page, and click on \'All versions\' underneath the download it automatically recommends for your system.

It changes quite frequently - today\'s version is v5.8.15 - so heed the warning: (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING) and be prepared to swap back, or upgrade again, if problems appear.

And in the special case of CPDN, make sure BOINC is fully shut down and backed up before upgrading.

I\'m using BOINC 5.8.0. I always have my temperature in my taskbar of my CPU. Today, I noticed that the temperature immediately dropped from 43C to 38C. I open BOINC- This is what I see-

And my climateprediction.net turns from 12% to 0%.
What is wrong? Is my hardware faulty? I have been running that climateprediction.net model for 300 hours now, so I don\'t think it could be it.

Hi Beremat. Welcome to the project.

It\'s a Coupled Ocean model, also known as a TCM, Transient Coupled Model.
They\'re all that there is now, and are a combination of experiments 2 and 3 as described here. They can also be described as a hindcast + forecast model.

These models start in December 1920 so as to be fully running by the start of 1921.
They trickle once a year, in early December. The first trickle is at 0.67%

As I recall, the number of users when you first start is 1 because that\'s you, and the total number hasn\'t been found by the program at that stage.
You can see stats on the project\'s front page here.

As for how well your computer is doing, others will show up soon to give you some comparisons. But running the screen saver will slow you down a lot. Those of us serious about the crunching set Windows to use Blank or None under screensaver, and use the Show graphics button in the Tasks tab occasionally.

There are 4 README stickies here with \"things you need to know\".

My project is at 0.691% but no trickle message. My messages tab says nothing about sending anything or connecting to the server. Nothing in Transfers ever showed up. What\'s the deal?

Actually, I don\'t plan on leaving the computer on 24/7... Just until the next checkpoint, backup, then turn off. ;)

I have a dsingle, not a X2 3800+. I was just playing a 3D MMO so it is at 2.10 but when I was running the Visualizer all the time, it was at 2.03.

I\'ll try to leave it for the day tomorrow without any apps with a clean boot, blank screensaver and see what it drops down to.

There are 4 README stickies here with \"things you need to know\".

Thanks, right now my model is at 4422 timesteps and at 02/02/21. The registered users still says 1, but I guess that can wait. Thanks for the readmes! That answered many questions.

If something comes up, i\'ll post again.

Greetings! I just joined this project and I must say, I LOVE IT.

I have 2 questions-

I have an Athlon 3800+, bought a week ago. \"timesteps\" or when the time changes by half an hour get completed in about 2 or 1 seconds, but sometimes they freeze up for times up to 20 seconds. In the screensaver mode, I get 2 hours done in 1 second without any hangups. Is this normal? Also, in 34 minutes of CPU time, I got 0.023% into the way, for a 1920-2080 model. Is this a good time?

Second, I\'d like to know what type of model I got (sulphur, etc.)

It\'s telling me i\'m doing a model of december 1920 at the moment, and when I get to see a progress bar, it shows me 1920-2080 at 0.02% completion. Which project did I get? Also, when I look at the graphics page, It tells me: Global Progress: Registered Users: 1. What is that?

Thanks-keep up the great work on the project!
