21) Message boards : Number crunching : Upload problem (Message 40346)

Post:
This thread suggests it could be a server-problem.

There's no validator running. There's no quorum to be met. They will remain pending for ever. They will never "clear".

On the overview page for tasks per computer, I do not see the credits for tasks which have actually trickled. Only the credits for completed tasks are shown. Is that intentional? Looking in detail the task shows credits claimed and granted.

I saw this message in my log. Is this also related to the server upgrade?

6/4/2010 10:56:45 AM climateprediction.net You used the wrong URL for this project
6/4/2010 10:56:45 AM climateprediction.net The correct URL is http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/

Is this the task you\'re talking about? http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=10336578 It trickled for the last time January 6th. It used to trickle about once a day. I would abort it.

The specific routine in AVG which was causing the problem was LinkScanner, which in AVG-speak is the bit that protects you from connecting to dodgy web sites. Obviously, CPDN isn\'t dodgy but the AVG algorithms are not yet sophisticated enough. LinkScanner sits alongside the modules for firewall and virus etc. Does ESAT ESS have something similar?

I use ESS myself and I do not have \'stuck\' uploads.

If you do not feel comfortable making such a file, I would recommend not going down this particular path.
I can\'t think of an alternative, myself.

You could create a cc_config.xml file, and change the <ncpus>N</ncpus>-setting. This can be used to fool the client into thinking your computer has more cores than actually available. This setting is intended for testing and, I think, will result in N models running. When you have downloaded enough models I, therefore recommend changing this setting back or deleting/renaming the cc_config.xml file. For more info on this config file, click this link: cc_config.xml
29) Message boards : Number crunching : HADAM3P's too much RAC weight? (Message 38470)

Post:
Our calculation is not the same as on the BOINC Wiki.

It isn\'t? That surprises me a bit. Is this a general thing or CPDN-only? Does this mean we have CPDN-RAC, which can\'t rightly be added to the RAC of other projects? Because of the apples<>oranges thingy?

I was on the application preference part of the site when I noticed this name \"UK Melt Office HADCM3\". I think it has to be \"UK Met\" instead of \"UK Melt\", although the last one seems strangely appropriate. :)

Edit: You\'ll have to edit the preferences to see the mistake.
31) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit granted, no work done? (Message 37972)
Posted 9 Sep 2009 by transient
Post:
I think the reason the question of cheating was raised was because the models showed no trickles received. It looked as if credit was granted without work being done.

Now the models do show trickles, so it must have been some sort of server hick-up.

Are you perhaps referring to crunching with your GPU? In that case, there\'s no application for a GPU on CPDN.

I don\'t have a backup for the crashed model. I don\'t consider myself to be knowledgeable enough (Or I might just be too lazy. :D ) to backup models and restore them without affecting the other projects. I read the tutorial on that subject and I decided to leave that alone.

I\'ll have to treat it as a learning experience. Do NOT mess with client_state.xml, if you do not know exactly what you\'re doing.

The model in question was downloaded the 27th of December. I edited the client state file somewhere in the beginning of January.
I don\'t think BOINC will download more than the current 3 models. The LTD for CPDN was a relatively large negative number, now it is positive.

You have a quad core computer.
BOINC has now loaded the 4 processors with 1 model each. This is normal.
The TCM option in prefs can give either an 80 year or an 160 year model, at random.

I can\'t see anything wrong with the indicated model.
What do you think is wrong with it, and why did you edit the xml file?

I do have a quad core but it is not dedicated solely to CPDN and I don\'t crunch 24/7. I estimate 4 models will take me 2 years. I would have preferred that one model at a time was crunched. I hope I will not have memory issues when BOINC decides to run more than one or two models at the same time.

The model in question looked to me like a 160 year model. It quit in 1980 after 60 years. Even if it had been a 80 year model it quit early. I saw no signs of the model going wrong. The reason I did the edit is because initially the model showed a completion time as if it was a 80 year model. I edited the 2 locations as indicated, in the thread about this problem. It is the only reason I can think of for the model to quit early, a wrongly edited client_state file. I waited for a few days for the stderr output to appear on the webpage. When that didn\'t happen I decided to post about it.

Can someone explain to me what happened with this one?

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=7122032

I fully expected it to run for 160 years. This was one of those models which showed a time estimate of 80 years. I edited the client_state.xml. Now the manager is downloading models like there is no tomorrow. It downloaded 3 models the last 2 days, all 160 year models as far as I can see.
40) Message boards : Number crunching : Low (partial??) Trickles (Message 32256)
Posted 20 Jan 2008 by transient
Post:
Take a look at this model:

hadcm3istd_01h7_1920_160_05922419_0

It last trickled, according to the website. on the 18th of January. The model trickles once per model year, right? As you can see the last trickle was for 1954, I think, could be 1955. When looking at the graphics for that model on my computer it just started crunching 1960, where are the 4 or 5 trickles produced since 1954/55? I restarted BOINC not too long ago so I can\'t show you the trickle messages in the log, but the one I saw(yesterday) did not show an error message, transfer tab is empty by the way. Can this be attributed to a remark in this message of the news and anouncements thread (quote: There have also been delays recently with the appearance of our successful trickles on our models\' project web pages.)?
