I have a number of 32GB machines that would run CPDN dedicated so I would like that option to be available if the model can cope please

If you want to try out running with more threads, edit 'run_oifs' and change the '2' on the line 'OMP_NUM_THREADS' but I suggest keeping to 4 or less as the parallel efficiency drops off markedly beyond 4 threads.

Hi Glenn - if the WU is using virtually all the memory on a machine, why would we worry about the efficiency dropping off? From my PoV, giving the WU all the cores is the best overall performance in this case. The extra cores running at only (e.g.) 20% efficiency, is still more work done per unit time. Or is the synchronisation required really that heavyweight?

cancelling in-progress tasks often angers crunchers it seems

at PrimeGrid, the names used in app_config.xml are displayed in the headers of the listing on the apps.php page, which makes a useful reference page

this approach works well at other projects, and i heartily support this

i had not noticed those compute errors - apologies for the incorrect info and thank you for pointing it out.
i am pretty certain that the times when they occurred i was doing something else on that machine, which i ought to stop doing.

i have a 8GB machine that runs a single task at a time with 100% success rate.
i have a 16GB machines that runs 2 tasks concurrently with 100% success rate.
i believe any issue is not about absolute memory available, but how those machines run.

one of my machines only has 8GB RAM and it has been working flawlessly (but subject to file upload issues) because i have max_concurrent set to 1 in my app_config.xml (project_max_concurrent would also work). but there is no way for this to be set by the server afaik - it has to be done by the user.

There is the WUProp@Home project that does collect some metrics from BOINC machines and allows comparison between different hardware, but haven't check it recently and not sure how many CPDN users are on it.

71 running OpenIFS according to https://stats.free-dc.org/wupropapp/climateprediction.netOpenIFS%2043r3%20Perturbed%20Surface so there might be some useful data there

If vbox is the way to a windows app, so be it.
But given we have a functioning native linux app, i would love to see a multi-threaded native linux app.
I would run much of those.
Whereas linux vbox is a total non-starter for me (many attempts, zero successes), and my few windows boxes won't have enough memory.

Fingers crossed.

downloaded tasks will continue as normal.
only the downloading of further tasks is impacted.

WUs from this app name won’t be downloaded to the computer, means limit the climateprediction.net WUs on a particular computer further?

No, these max_concurrent settings only control the execution of these tasks once downloaded.
The server selects which tasks to assign with no knowledge of your app_config.xml

Credit granted to all my tasks - 2,353 each

So if you can manage to keep the tasks running uninterrupted they *should* work (famous last words), or at least fail less often. I have not tried 'keep non-gpu tasks in memory' option, that might help. And I know I said OpenIFS shouldn't have restart problems, but it's not the fault of the model ;)

I deliberately suspended a task for 8+ hours using the 'keep non-gpu tasks in memory' option, and it completed and returned the task seemingly cleanly and successfully.

i will happily run tests on the dev server if invited.
so far i have 9 tasks that appear to run well - no credit though
