41) Questions and Answers : Windows : Model stopped running (Message 31094)

Hi Steinar

There are a lot of \'blue worlds\' lately. They may be related to the values being used in the recent batches of models.
I wouldn\'t start reinstalling things; it\'s much more likely to be the models.

************

A note for those people who aren\'t aware: the object of the climate models is NOT to run them to the due completion date. It\'s to run them as far as they\'ll go.
The researchers need to know which combinations of values produce a long time stable model and which don\'t, as much as they also want to know the end \'climate\' result.

The object of the project is to improvement climate forecasting, so it\'s just as important to know what works, as it is to know what doesn\'t.

Ok. I am running the prime95 toture test at the moment to check if everything is ok. Then I reinstall after that and if the first model keeps crashing I abort it and keeps on running the others?

Again the same model crashed, and right after another model crashed for the first time. I get the \"blue screen\" or ice world all the times. I dont know what happens here but my PC is the same as before, it is not used for much other things. All drivers updated, anti virus etc. It is not OC\'ed either.

The models went fine in the beginning but after the first crash it happens more and more often. No models had problem befor 50% was crunshed. I restore from backups but now there is a crash every day. The models have run 75% - 80% and it would be nice to see them reach the end.
Should I reinstall boinc? It is ver. 5.10.20 and/or should I terminate the models and reinstall the PC? Is it better to run only 3 models at the same time? I think it is sad not to finish them..

After reinstalling after the modelcrash, the model now works fine after passing the piont where it crashed. All other models also works fine :-)

I deleted the model that downloaded after the upload of the crashed model. I did so before I thought of aborting that model, so nobody in the project probably know its not going to finish. Sorry :/
I hope the models will finish without any problems..

There is a no definitive answer yet to this problem.
A \'blue world\' is what you get initially when starting a model, as the graphics data is not yet available for the display.
Whether this has anything to do with it, I don\'t know.

There is an info thread here, with a link near the bottom to a discussion thread.
This is for the slab models, but the symptoms are often similar for the Coupled Ocean models.

As to re-running from a backup, there\'s only one way to find out. :(
However, the problem may have started from before the time that the backup was made.

The model finished and uploaded tonight. I got the following msg:
08.10.2007 01:28:26|climateprediction.net|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result hadcm3iozn_cpyj_2000_80_45899412_7 (The device does not recognize the command. (0x16) - exit code 22 (0x16))

Exit code 22 is a fail on \"my side\"? isnt it?
Should I restore from the - thank god - newly created back-up I took after uploading the .zip-files on all 4 models?
I have suspended boinc just to be sure..

One of the 4 models running on my Q6600 suddenly stopped running, at least it seemed so.
When I turnes on the graphics the earth was only blue and I could not change it. It was stucked on 336 timesteps til checkpoint. I suspended boinc, rightclicked and exit, then I restarted the machine. The model started again but stopped at the same point.
The graphics window is slower to open and close too.
Is it something with the model or is it something with my PC? All models have run without any problems til now and the other 3 models run without any problems.

The model is:
hadcm3iozn_cpyj_2000_80_45899412_7 using hadcm3i version 544

After I wrote this, the model has advanced 3 timesteps..
I run antivirus, defragment, have updated drivers, did not use it to anything else for hours before it happened.

Edit: I took a backup yesterday :-)))
Should I reinstall?

Thx
Steinar

Running two models with hyperthreading increases throughput by about 15% on a single processor P4. On dual Xeons with hyperthreading, there doesn\'t appear to be any advantage due to front side bus/memory access/contention problems.

Does this mean that I can run 8 models on my Q6600?
I have 4 GB 800MHz ram

Since there was a lot of problems, I reinstalled the whole machine. I reinstalled boinc and started all over. Again one model crashed. I got the msg:

09.09.2007 08:34:29|climateprediction.net|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result hadcm3iozn_cpyi_2000_80_45899411_1 (The device does not recognize the command. (0x16) - exit code 22 (0x16))

The pc was reinstalled yesterday and I left the house after that was done and no one has ever tuched the pc. Yet it crashed one model. The other three are still running but I\'m afraid I\'m going to be a constant model-demolisher.

Is it something with the PC? I attached to the right url this time.
When I reinstalled I deleted the partition and reformatted the disk so everything should be in order..
I have Boin ver 5. 10. 20

One of my models crashed when I started the pc today. I took a backup before I turned off the pc yesterday. The model finished and a new one was downloaded. There are no special cirkumstances as I can see.
Should I restore from backup or is it something wrong with the model?
If I restore, what about the fifth model? (the one that downloaded this morning)

Another thing. I attached from www.climateprediction.net. In the messagebox I get the message that I should detach \"when convenient\" and attach from the right url. Can I do that before the models are finished?

A slower machine can still do useful climate modelling work :

* Try running the \'slab\' model rather than the \'coupled\' model. The slab model has much smaller requirements for CPU time and memory. You can control which you run (via Your Account / Project Preferences / Set HadSM3 to \'ticked\', and HadCM3 to \'unticked\').

Alternatively, you could run the http://www.apsathome.org/ project, which is doing localised atmospheric physics work which will be used to improve climate models in the future. The work units only take a few hours even on older PCs.

For us who are crunching CPDN 24/7 and nothing else, is it better for the project if we do the longer models? My PC will run for a long time anyway and maybe its better if I run 4 long models then?

I think that is what is in the upload tab in the boinc-menu. But if network activity is suspended it wont be enything there...

..And today BOINC froze totally. I restarted the PC, reinstalled BOINC in the same folder from a back-up, but it kept on freezing. At last I had to abort the two models and I uninstalled BOINC, deleted the old folders and reinstalled everything.
When I downloaded BOINC again it was ver. 5.8.16, the one I uninstalled was 5.8.15. Any problems with that version?
58) Questions and Answers : Windows : Incorrect function 0x1 error (Message 28450)
Posted 5 May 2007 by Steinar1965
Post:
Error 1 is mostly associated with shutting down too quickly for the modelling program to close all of it\'s files.
This may be because Windows is closed without first Exiting BOINC, or becuause the power is simply turned off with the program running.
And Vista is worse, because fast turn off is one of it\'s touted features.

The only guaranteed way to save the model is:
(Menu) Suspend BOINC,
Wait until it SAYS \"Suspended\", then
(Menu) Exit from BOINC.

Anything less is \"Russian Roulette\".

I have just had the same problem. My computer froze and I had to turn it off, and when I turnes it on again, one of my two models had crashed.
The first model I ran last year also crashed, this time because I played an internet radio

Steinar\'s model completed and uploaded perfectly:

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=5776940

You could run two models simultaneously on that computer. Or a climate model on one core and a different project on the other. Ther\'s enough memory for 2 models.

I am now :-)
They downloaded without problems.

Hi Steinar

Yes, the server problem is solved, at least temporarily. So we can enable network activity and allow our files to upload. That should include final 2080 files. But if I were you I\'d make a backup first before uploading the finished model, just in case. Make the backup now, before you let the model finish and before you allow network activity.

There\'s an easy method through my sig link. The README about avoiding model crashes, item #1 by Les.

Congratulations on getting to the end!

Steinar, when you\'ve had plenty of time to see this, if you don\'t mind I\'ll move your post and my reply to a thread about current models, not about Classic. Hope that\'s OK.

Sure. I didnt know where to post it so just delete it and/or move it as you want right now.
Thx for quick answer
Steinar

PS before you move it could you tell me which date the model stop.
Have heard both the first and third of december 2080
