Formula BOINC 2024
(Message 70412)
Posted 16 Feb 2024 by UBT - Timbo Post: Formula BOINC 2024 re-launch I am acting as admin for the above group and I wanted to let you know that the Formula BOINC website has been updated for the 2024 Season. And that the Sprint Season will start on 29th February - just about 2 weeks time - so please help publicise Formula BOINC to your team members so that they can take part. For Teams: Teams previously registered to take part in these regular BOINC Challenges in previous years have been included for this season and Teams have now been allocated to one of 3 Leagues, depending on their performance in 2023. If your team is NOT registered already, please ask your team founder to register (via the FB website) Registered Teams are listed here: https://formula-boinc.org/teams.py?race=0&division=1&standing=team And it would be really good if your team members can take part and support the various BOINC projects throughout the forthcoming year. As many teams are already registered, members do not have to do anything EXCEPT to make a note of the date and time when the Sprints will be taking place and to ensure that they are crunching tasks from the chosen project. This information will be displayed on our website here: https://formula-boinc.org/sprints.py?race=0&division=1&standing=team For members: We also have a Members League so that individuals can compete against one another - this is entirely voluntary but it can be rewarding to know how well you are doing when compared to other FB members - even those in the same team. If any team members have not already registered, then there is a webpage that you can visit and register, which is here: https://formula-boinc.org/howtoregister.py And finally for all the latest news about Formula BOINC, we would ask members to visit our forum: https://formula-boinc.org/forum/index.php I do hope teams and members will support the Challenges and by doing so, this will help the many BOINC projects who need the support of volunteers in order to continue their research. best regards UBT - Timbo Admin for Formula BOINC |

Posted 11 Oct 2023 by UBT - Timbo Post: Well, I tried doing exactly the same thing, using a Windows 7 machine running BOINC v7.24.1 - and it got attached at the first attempt. This is what I did: Hiya I got to that same point, and pretty much did the same procedure (on the second host), but BM returned a Failed notice before I got the chance to enter ANY account details as you were able to (as follows):
I never got to the above point. :-( FYI: The first host didn't even get to the "Terms" section :-( I would suggest that unless there are perhaps security reasons to consider, that you do NOT waste any more time on this. I suspect the issue is an incompatibility, between my Windows 7 host and whatever the CPDN server is expecting to "see" as far as the host operating system is concerned...and given this is being done over https protocols, then it could be a real pain to try and find it out why it is failing. The fact is though, that every other BOINC project that has been installed on BOTH the hosts I am running, install without any issues at all. But it might just be that ALL the other projects are less "demanding" when it comes to whatever configuration of host hardware and OS, is trying to connect via BOINC Manager ;-) One day, when I do not need a Windows 7 environment on both hosts, I will upgrade to a more recent OS, and on those newer PC(s), then I will try again to help CPDN. :-) best regards for all your help Tim |

Hi I just enabled the http debug on my second host. And then I tried to add CPDN to this second host using BM v7.24.1 and it sort of worked as it got to the Terms of use "page" (which it didn't do before) - I clicked on "I agree" and it then gave the same failure notice as previously advised. I'll send you the error log by PM, as the log seems to contains personal data relating to my CPDN account! I cannot try with the original host right now but will do so tomorrow, along with setting the debug error log. regards Tim |

So, now 2 different hosts, in 2 different locations 20 miles apart, using 2 different ISPs and 3 different versions of BOINC Manager - and ALL have the same issue. regards Tim |

Posted 9 Oct 2023 by UBT - Timbo Post: Just read your post again. I added a new host yesterday without any issues. Could you try again and see if you are still getting the message? Hi Thanks for the reply. I've tried again twice today and I keep getting the Failure notice as reported previously. I also added another project to this same host and that worked perfectly - I already had an account with this other project, so once I input my email and password, it added the new project and downloaded the required files to this new host, and with zero issues - so my install of BOINC Manager seems to be OK. With CPDN, I am not even getting to the section where I can enter my email/password info. :-( I will let the current tasks (from other projects) finish, then reboot this specific host and install 7.24.1 and see what happens. Further info: --------------- I have a second host, that was running BM 7.20.2 and CPDN was already "joined" to this second host. So, this was reset and then removed and I used the "Add project" function to add CPDN project back onto the host...and it FAILED with the same report as before. :-( regards Tim |

I will let Andy know that this problem has resurfaced. Hi Thanks for the reply. FYI: I am running BOINC Manager v7.22.2 on a Windows 7 Pro host (yes, I know it's old !! but Win 8 was awful, Win 10 is a pain and the host machine doesn't support Win 11 :-( ) All other CPU based projects run perfectly fine. :-) PS: Am glad the project is up and running again after not having any tasks for some years. regards Tim |

"project doesn't support computers of type anonymous" - error message
(Message 61464)
Posted 5 Nov 2019 by UBT - Timbo Post: Perhaps you have a cc_config file that fiddles with the computer settings. Hi Thanks for the reply. cc_config has nothing in it to cause any issues. But it doesn't matter much, as the researchers here lately seem to favour modelling programs which are only available for Linux. Indeed. Judging by your high credit number, you must have other computers which ARE getting work here, so It may be easiest to just use that computer for other projects. I'm not sure what you mean? By "high credit number" do you mean just on CPDN (where my total credit is just 111,850 - though I've been a member of this project for many years - I just never had enough CPUs or patience to wait for the CPDN tasks to be crunched in a timely fashion). Otherwise, if you mean my "Total" credits - that's because I've been crunching (via BOINC) since the early 2000s and have contributed to many, many projects. :-) |

Posted 4 Nov 2019 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all Anyone care to offer a possible explanation of the above CPDN message, as displayed in the BOINC Manager Error Log? This hasn't stopped me getting any work from any other BOINC project that this specific (Windows) PC is attached to - so, I'm guessing that CPDN admins are doing something in the background to "verify" accounts (in order to prevent zombie computers from wasting their time). Either way, any suggestions would be helpful - plus a way of fixing it. |

Posted 30 Apr 2018 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all I recently re-started crunching some CPDN tasks and one was recently finished and uploaded. After 330,000 seconds of crunching, I received ZERO credit. The info is here:
All the trickles seems to have been uploaded too: Latest Trickles Received The quorum seems to be set to "1", but this task is still waiting validation... minimum quorum 1 I know we're running on the backup server but basic simple operations should be running OK such as website, forums and validation of returned tasks ? |

Hi Mike, Thanks for the idea. It had occurred to me, but my last backup on this PC was quite a while before the _13.zip file was created.... BOINC is the only program that resides on my C drive, and I rarely back this up as the PC has been very reliable up to now (that\'s it - the \"kiss of death\" has been invoked !!). As such, backing up the drive has never been a major priority.... :-( as there\'s been very little to \"lose\", as most projects I crunch on are much shorter duration. I\'ve unsuccessfully completed BBC, CPDN and SAP WUs before now...usually the WU errors....but this is my 1st BBC WU (of 3) that might actually complete....468 hours to go.....and now I get this file to upload that won\'t.... regards Tim |

Posted 16 May 2007 by UBT - Timbo Post: \"mo.v\" wrote: Yes thank you Tim, that\'s very helpful. I didn\'t notice I had to look for your model on the BBC site, sorry. Understood - I\'ve made a backup of the _14.zip file so, if there\'s another mechanism to upload it (email?), then of course that route can be taken. Of course, if this is now an on-going issue, then once the WU is finshed (468 hours time), then I may have a few ZIP files to send !! \"mo.v\" wrote: I\'m going to ask the programmers whether a longer deadline for the upload of these zip files can be written into the code for future models. Don\'ty worry - I know the importance of completing the entire WU...and after 3966 hours of crunching, I\'m not going to stop now. I doubt there\'s much point to making a programming change, as the BBC project is nearing it\'s end UNLESS of course this is a common problem affecting other crunchers....although why it\'s taken until now to surface is a bit of a concern...how many other \"ZIP\" files have \"vanished\" because people assumed that once it had left the \"transfers\" tab, it had been uploaded (although it had been deleted !!). And we all know about teh lack of resources of BOINC projects (in most cases) but this highlights a big concern, that all this work being done is for \"nought\" if the projects severs are \"down\" for any length of time. Maybe there should be a central \"back-up\" server, operated jointly by all BOINC projects so, if a specific server failed, at least another upload route is available....? This degree of \"redundancy\" can then prevent lost WUs - and they can be re-sent from the central server to the specific projects once their own servers are back up. \"mo.v\" wrote: So you have to get the _14 zip file to Oxford. I\'ve just looked at the BBC server status and it\'s all GO. The http error in the messages looks like a firewall problem. \'Access to reference site succeeded\' means that your internet connection can contact Google, ie it\'s working, but can\'t connect to the BBC server. Still no joy - just tried it....! \"mo.v\" wrote: Look please at this Well, I switched the XP firewall off, shut down BOINC and restarted it. Still stuck and I\'m getting the same http error. What\'s strange is that other projects are uploading files OK and nothing has changed on my PC or router for ages....OK, so maybe a Windows Update might have changed something, so I\'ll take a look for that. My router firewall only blocks incoming stuff. Of course, it might be my ISP who is blocking things....however, where on earth do I find out the upload server URL\'s in order to check things? If I can find out the correct upload URL, then I can do a simple \"ping\" and \"traceroute\" to establish that they can be seen external to BOINC Manager...that at least might help to confirm where the problem might lie. regards Tim |

Why not just leave the BBC project (and the stats so generated) as separate entities? Is there any REAL benefit to combining them....? I can see lots of reasons for leaving the CPDN projects as they are...apart from the fact that nothing needs to be done (although that maybe too late now, after what happened this evening....). regards Tim |

Team credits - has there been a change?
(Message 21364)
Posted 16 Mar 2006 by UBT - Timbo Post: OK - I figured out that the team member usernames are added to the CPDN project site in almost \"realtime\". But any credits that new members bring to the team are only updated maybe twice a day. So, there is a disparity for a period of upto 12-13 hours between a new member joining a team and their CPDN credits then being added to the teams total. And the stats sites are some time behind that, depending on when the XML\'s are exported and the stats site has done their calucualtions.... So, it\'s all a bit \"loopy\". I thought computers were s\'posed to speed things up - bring back the abacus and the sliderule...! regards for the replies anyways. Tim |

Team credits - has there been a change?
(Message 21341)
Posted 16 Mar 2006 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi, In the past, CPDN credits awarded while a cruncher was a member of a team, left the team if the member joined another team. My team (UK BOINC Team) noticed this about a month or so ago, when one of our team members left, taking ALL of the 250,000+ CPDN credits with them. The team this member then joined, then received ALL of these credits. - Has this policy changed recently (if so, when??). - Are credits now retained by the team, if a member leaves, or are they all lost and hence are deducted from the teams total. Needless to say, other BOINC projects allow a team to retain the credits that were earned while a cruncher was a member of that team. regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/uk-boinc-team.html edit: typo |
