The error messages you are getting are

<core_client_version>4.45</core_client_version>
<message>There are no child processes to wait for. (0x80) - exit code 128 (0x80)
</message>

The only reference I can find to this relates to the version of DirectX - which do you have installed? Do you know if there different versions of DirectX for 64bit and 32bit, or if it\'s a single driver?

There is a 64 bit version of dxdiag. Here is the first bit of the output up to the end of the graphics section.

Hi,

I would simply download latest version on BOINC; generation 4.x is way outdated, use 5.x instead.

I am running BOINC 5.4.9

Why am i getting error messages for version 4.45

I have been wrestling for months trying to get this program to run properly on my athlon x2 / windows x64. I cannot get cpdn to run for more than a couple of hours before it crashes the machine. Please see my other posts here and at bbc.cpdn.

I have updated directX, graphics drivers, x64 patches etc. Cooling has been upgraded: CPU temps are below 52 flat out, MB below 38, GPU below 55 in this heatwave and are usually much lower (cpu ~46-48, MB 28-30, gpu 50-53). I am not overclocking the cpu or memory. I have relaxed the memory timings to 2.5-7-7-12 2T, as tightening them up made the machine lock up (defaults are 2.5-4-4-7 2T).

I am receiving no error messages, there are no warnings in PCProbe, no BSOD, no error logs.

I have run several memtest 86, Prime 95 tests (one per cpu) for 24 hours without errors or warnings. This machine appears stable and will run SETI indefinitely.

I am at my wits end and will have no choice but to uninstall cpdn unless i can resolve this issue, as i am worried that i am stressing some hardware component which is causing a self-defence shutdown response.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I am having severe problems keeping my machine afloat for more than a few hours at a time while running this program on x64. Please see my numerous posts here (and on the bbc.cpdn) for the sorry tale, i can\'t bear going over it all again...

Basically, the machine turns itself off after writing to disk. There are no error messages, and the machine can be rebooted without any \'windows wasn\'t shut down properly\' procedures. I have updated directx, all drivers are current. The same five \'dataout\' files are always the most recently modified. I have variously disabled network cards, display drivers, sound card, firewire etc. but to no avail. The problem occurs even when cpdn is the only program installed on a fresh, fully updated installation of x64. The machine runs indefinitely when not running cpdn.

The machine should be able to cope easily: it has run a number of Prime95 torture tests (two simultaneousl tests, one per CPU) for 6-24 hours reliably and without errors. CPU temps are below 50 flat out, MB below 35. Pagefile is locked at 7Gb, lashings of RAM, BOINC runs cpdn in its own partition, which is defragged regularly. Speeds are slow by the figures discussed in this thread: 2.38 and 2.35 s/TS. Does this indicate a problem?

I have tried running at least 7 hadcm3 models on both the bbc installation and BOINC 5.4.9 and the problems are the same on all counts. How can i tell if this is a file corruption, software conflict or program bug? Is there anywhere to send files?

You can use any version of the boinc manager, but be careful about the installation directory.

As an example, for going from the bbc to standard:
* Make a backup of the BBC one,
* uninstall it,
* rename the BBC directory \'c:\\program files\\climate change experiment\' to \'c:\\program files\\boinc\',
* then download whichever standard version you want (5.2.19 and 5.4.9 are available from the main download site boinc.berkeley.edu).

Not quite there: have three BBC models loaded and one running under BOINC 5.4.9. cpdn displayed as a project.

Condition satifactory

However, BOINC manager indicates the presence of cpdn as a project but there are no models loaded for this project, although there are 5 hadcm3 folders and a whole load of zipped files, most of which carry similar file names to the folders in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\boinc\\projects\\climateprediction.net. It is these files that i wish to tidy up, so that i know what to backup and what to discard.

Getting there slowly, thanks for the trouble you\'re taking

Hi,

As far as I can tell the models have have been manually aborted. Does anyone other than you use the computer? If so, it may be worth explaining the difference between \'abort\' and \'suspend\'... !

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=5360946

If you have a backup of the model *before it was aborted* then restoring should work.

You can get rid of the space taken up by the aborted units just by deleting their folders.

The \'calculating yearly data\' message is harmless, and you can ignore it. It\'ll stick around for a full model year (i.e., between 12 hours and 36 hours depending on the speed of your PC).

************************

Hi,

Suspending the model, rather than aborting, simply downloaded another until the \'no new work\' was activated. The crashing models were manually aborted after downloads got stuck: repeatedly trying and failing to download the same 2 hadcm3***.exe files, while continuing to request more work (and, alas, getting it). Some of the models were crunched for 3-5 model years, but didn\'t write data either to disk or pagefile and had to restart at timepoint 0 after a crash. There are two kinds of instability: shutting down without loss of data, and shutting down with loss of all data.

At present, i am crunching the BBC models using the BBC version of BOINC as they have earlier deadlines This BOINC will only stay afloat if it is restricted to one processor, so there is a possibility that overheating is an issue, although the probes indicate against this. (The \'statistics\' page is also much easier to read than the cpdn: dark on light graphics wins hands down.)

I have several more models to crunch: at least 3 (although i am not sure how many are viable) from cpdn to be crunched by BOINC 5.2.13 (This version of BOINC is more stable than the BBC and runs for >48 hours reliably). Can i crunch any of the models on either BOINC, depending on which performs better?. Or should i just delete all the models and get fresh ones when the backlog has been cleared?

Sorry for the hassle that this new work / abort sequence has caused.

I don\'t understand the \'it tried to write to the briefcase backup copy this morning\' comment, what did the system do?

Perhaps it may be an idea to change your backup method - I just copy the entire c:\\program files\\boinc folder in explorer.

Can\'t comment on Win64 myself since I don\'t use it, perhaps someone else can shed some light here.

*****************************

Before the machine crashed in this particular instance the last five files to be modified were in the briefcase copy, and the previous twenty were written to the master BOINC folder.All were written within 2 minutes of the system shutdown. This happened at 4.30 am when the machine was unoccupied. I have backed up cpdn, uninstalled BOINC, rebooted,updated graphics drivers (and, boy, was the system was hungry for them) defragged, reinstalled, chnged the backup method to a straight copy method. The model has been running for 22 hours since then, and the machine sounds happier. The running temps are lower too, but that could simply attributed to the end of that hot spell. Machine and model appear to be working together.

I am having global problems with this program (see other posts: \'windows x64\' and \'calculating yearly data\'). Now the cpdn has downloaded and aborted several models on the trot. I have instructed the BOINC manager to prevent any new work. I have 1.78Gb of data in the cpdn folder, including some of the models downloaded. Please would someone help me tidy this installation up?

I am not sure that the program is keeping track of its bits and pieces. I have variously reached between 4% and 13% of several models before the program runs into trouble. I have some of these data in backup.

Please advise

Is anyone out there running the cpdn model on windows x64 (64 bit XP)? The server thinks that i am running Windows Server 2003 SP1. Will this make a difference?

I am having major problems with the stability of this program: the machine turns itself off after writing dataout files: it tried to write to the briefcase backup copy this morning. I am not overheating, and there is no error message, no memory dump, no blue screen of death, and the machine can be rebooted immediately.

Please would anyone who is successfully running this program on x64 reply to this query, so that i can eliminate OS problems?

One of my WUs got stuck trying to calculate yearly data. Have data in backup file, restoring it made no difference WU still stuck after 4 hours so i suspended it. BOINC downloaded another WU which is running ok. How do i retrieve the first model, or do i wait for the server to do it?
