1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Can\'t parse scheduler reply (Message 776)

There is a little bit to less information. Mostly iot is good to see the messages around the critical message.

In this case here the question is, is the rest of the operation going normal. The was a small bug in maintenance mode some time ago, which only impact the first line of the reply file. Maybe this still exists. But a empty or destroid sched_reply.xml file will give the same message.

You should have a look in this file (in the BOINC folder) when the message accours again. This should give a hint.

2) Questions and Answers : Windows : Downloads & starts new wu on reboot (Message 751)

For my feeling the most strange thing in the logs is that BOINC always seems to start with no host ID and project name and information.

This normaly is written in client_state.xml and BOINC should get it from there on restart. A problem with Windows shutting down the apps in wrong sequenz should not matter at this point.

Do you change the write to disk interval in the prefs? Or do you see something strange in the BOINC folder or the client_state.xml? But I don't really know what to look for.

I think you should try to remove and total new install BOINC and to set the number of max CPU's in the prefs to 1. I use a computer with XP pro similar like yours and there is no problem. So I would believe in a problem of the install or the Operatings system.

Hehe, Julian,

you do more then installing a new graphics driver. The message show BOINC starts with release 3.20 and find a Client 4.03 CPDN project. :o

So between the restarts you change the client. May be to many gambling around with both releases let some different folders stay on your harddisk and you got up the wrong.

And if the the major release change, the current project is resetted and all WU's and results still on the client are lost. And after this you can not get new WU's because you have the wrong (old 3.20 release) client for CPDN and the server will give you no new work. :(

4) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : SCHEDULER_REPLY::parse(): bad first tag (Message 384)
Posted 8 Aug 2004 by Profile old_user183
Post:
Hello Martin,

this sound like a problem created by the server or the line, not by the client. So nothing you can do with the client can help there.

When the server answers the client, the answer is to find in a file sched_reply.xml. The BOINC client read and parse this file and if something is wrong with it you get a message like you see.

You can easy have look in this file with a editor (if you know how to use one with linux :-)). Mostly it is easy to see when the XML in the file is malformed. May be a programming error with the BOINC server send a wrong tag or only strange chars are in the file (transfer problem) or the file is empty and so on.

You may report what you find in the file.

If you post lines of xml files, you should replace the "&gt;" char and its counterpart with "}" and "{" and please be sure to remove things like email_hash, authenticator or code_sign_key for being secure.

5) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : Running two version of BOINC at once (Message 350)

1.
You must use the BOINC Client 4.xx for CPDN and 3.xx for SETI, Predictor and Pirate at this moment. Doing this on one PC is not possible.

In the future the other projects will go to 4.xx too. I believe this will happen very quick.

2.
And there will be a change of work scheduling with the the 4.xx release which will allow BOINC to stop crunching a long running WU, crunch a other WU and continue crunching the first WU. This is not really testet with multiple projects, but after it workes as planned, it should allow you to allow you to do both projects on one client.

It is described here: <a href="http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/client_sched.php">BOINC Client scheduling policies</a>

7) Questions and Answers : Getting started : How do I tell if a trickle file has been generated? (Message 224)
Posted 6 Aug 2004 by Profile old_user183
Post:
&gt; I see one on the web site, I should have two. Is the display running one
&gt; behind? Or is there just a slow piece between the upload and the display. I
&gt; found the log entries where BOINC connected to CPDN, this was made more
&gt; difficult because of all of the errors and connection attempts to the other
&gt; projects that are not up to 4.x yet.

I had only one trickle until now and that is shown on the web page and I am not sure, but this happend quick as I remember. Tomorrow there must be reached the next trickle point.

I like John's idea to save the graphics configuration and include the defaults in the project prefs. Would be nice. :)

And I had no problems with the graphics control because a nice menu pops up on using my right mouse button with linux viz utility. For my feeling this would be helpfully on MS Windows too.
