This article is an excellent read for those who want an overview of the role of climate models in predicting climate change.
Written by the Met Office and the Hadley Centre it explains the science behind the models we use on climateprediction.net in understandable language.

\"A model approach to climate change
The Earth is warming up, with potentially disastrous consequences. Computer climate models based on physics are our best hope of predicting and managing climate change.....\"

No, don\'t abort it. CPDN doesn\'t work to the deadlines boinc assigns. The results will still be accepted and useful whenever they\'re returned, and you\'ll still get credit for them.

For the two preferences we\'re talking about you only have a choice of yes or no, so choose yes for both of them. Leave all the others alone for now - you shouldn\'t need to change them hopefully.

If they were set to \'no\' and you change them to \'yes\', it will stop the model starting again from the beginning every time you shut down your computer or do some other work on it

Click on the link down the left hand side of this page that says \'your account\', then where it says

Preferences
General preferences - specify when and how BOINC uses your computer, click on the \'view or edit\' link

In the top section make sure it says
Do work while computer is in use? yes
and ...
Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if \'yes\') yes

If either of those says \'no\' then go down that page and click on \'edit preferences\'
Once in there, change them to say \'yes\', then scroll down the page and click on update preferences. Then go into your boinc manager. Go to the projects tab, highlight climate prediction and click on update on the left habd side and that should then reset your preferences to \'yes\'

Make sure you haven\'t accidentally set the screensaver to record the display by pressing ctrl+Q. If you have when you look at the graphics above the info text about timesteps etc it will say recording... You can switch it off by pressing ctrl+Q again and the message (and the accumulation of used memory) will disappear.

Don\'t do a reset just yet. IIRC the % complete refers to the % complete in the particular phase its crunching. There are 3 phases in the slab models and you\'ve completed phase 1, so it could be 9.863% of phase2 which would put it over a 1/3rd of the way through the entire model.

For each of those models, should I be seeing a credit of 41472? It\'s not doing any harm me staying attached for a few days.

Hi Edward,

Congrats on the finished models! Yes, you\'ll get the full credit for all of them, it just takes a while for it to work its way through the system as the last 2 only uploaded today

Done, thanks.

Hi Bellator,

No, you\'re most definitely not wasting your time. The trickles will go up eventually, multiple trickles if need be, and they\'ll all be counted and useful.

There was a server problem a couple of weeks ago but things are ok now so it could be just a temporary glitch. Just let it keep trying until it succeeds but don\'t detach or you\'ll lose the model and all the work that you\'ve already done.

I blame the melange, or lack of it...

Of course some of us gave up trying to fathom such deep mysteries long ago and just bookmarked the relevant pages :-)

Personally, I\'m sick to the back teeth of hearing about the predictor fiasco. I don\'t crunch for predictor and doubt if I ever will.
The whole thing seems to have just degenerated into a schoolyard name calling session which has nothing to do with CPDN.

As Mike said:
Since Predictor@home has now been informed of the details behind the trojan account and is acting to block it, posts relating to Predictor@home should henceforth be made at the Predictor@home project and relevant teams rather than CPDN. I think you need a RAC of 1 in order to post at Predictor.

I agree 100% with Mike

There\'s a problem with the preferences at the moment. Boinc have a got a preferences override file you can use. Have a look at this thread http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=5008

I\'d closed Boinc anyway as I decided to back up the model before I started messing. I did it when it was shut down and then when I restarted it had changed. -swapped between projects to try it out - not got much patience! :-)

thanks! That worked a treat. :)
also changed <run_if_user_active>0</run_if_user_active> to 1 which I assume sets it to do work while computer in use. If I\'ve got that wrong can someone tell me...please! Have left the others alone as they seemed to be the default values.

I\'ve been having a similar preferences problem. I have \'leave applications in memory\' set to yes and in spite of all my attempts, it just won\'t do it, every time it switches to Einstein it says \'removed from memory\'.

It\'s not just cpdn though, it does the same thing with Einstein.
