1) Message boards : Number crunching : Is s/TS a running average... (Message 4192)

Update:

those seti wu were just short wu's, but still, if 2 seti wu are running they get a time close to 3:30, one seti and one cpu get a time close or over 3:40

With the changed scheduler period, now the projects get 4 hours of work before switching and for over 24 hour the scheduler work on one project at a time (4 hours seti then 4 hours CPDN)and the s/ts have remain (very) different:

Latest Trickles For This Host
Result ID | Phase | Timestep |CPU Time (sec)| Average (sec/TS)

139759 | 2 | 64812 | 810458 | 2.5010
201550 | 1 | 54010 | 175261 | 3.2450

Thaks for the reply

I've trying to force the scheduler in doing what I want, but playing with the resource share doesn't help. Any help would be welcome.

What I've been able to do is changing the scheduler period and now there is one CPDN and one Seti running, before that there were 2 seti wu's running:
2 seti wu's: between 3:00 and 3:10/WU (or maybe just short wu)
1 seti to 1 CPDN => seti between 3:30 and 3:40/WU

For now I conclude that CPDN is dominant over seti

I also have a question on the s/ts.
I have a p4 3.00GHz with HT running 2 models/Wu's and there is a big difference in s/ts:
First wu: between 1.9 s/ts and 2.2s/ts
Second wu: between 3.0 s/ts and 3.3 s/ts

I don't know if this matters but then first wu is running all the time, the second gets pre-empted (but remains in memory), sharing CPU time with seti

Is this normal?

It is always possible but I believe suspended came up in the messages.
But regardless of that, when and why or what triggers a benchmark?

5) Message boards : Number crunching : Question on BOINC CPDN interactions (Message 3520)
Posted 8 Sep 2004 by old_user1749
Post:
I had a problem some time ago with a model/wu after running 2 to 4 days. So I wonder if it is possible that Boinc doesn\'t shut down CPDN if you close it while it is in suspend (boinc gui) or if you shut boinc down if it is in suspend and starts running a benchmark, what I also find weird.

I\'m running Win xp pro SP1 on a PIV 3.0GHz with HT with 512 Meg of ram and boinc 4.05

So what happened was, I put boinc in suspend for playing Need4Speed, but in the middle of the game the pc started to slow down. With Alt + tab, I looked at what was going on in other programs opened (IE and boinc), boinc was running a benchmark and I shut it down using File and Exit. Later, when done playing, I started boinc up again and I got: Couldn\'t start the app for this result: error -144

After some restarting and re-attaching I found the \"old\" CPDN still running (I assume this because as the app couldn\'t start it wouldn\'t be running), after killing it, some more error -144 and restarting boinc all was well again.
This all left me with more computers then I have so I merged them. Now I don\'t seem to be able to find this wu on my account (and maybe with reason) the credit granted from it

I\'m not going to try to recreate the situation, but it would be nice if someone could tell me if it was just bad luck or an imperfection in boinc or cpdn

I think Xp would be complaining alot if you only had 256 meg of (free) hard disk space ;)

No expert so I could be wrong

First I'll assume you mean 256 Megs of RAM (not hard disk, just in case it's not the same in English)
Well then I think Xp will find enough to put in the swap file so that CPDN can have the 128 Megs it wants, but the best way is maybe to try it

but in any case there will be a lot of swapping going on if all the processes need their cpu time.

> Gravel
> > Co. can replace your Rocks quite easily... ;)
> >
> >
> I thought you knew the unit of credit in BOINC is called a cobblestone. So we
> are piling up rocks here after a fashion.

I didn't know, I'm learning every day.
A translator told me that we are actually collecting stones like those found in some streets of rather old cities/villages (in Europe)
The ones that were thrown at law enforcers in times of civil unrest...

But then again the translator may be mistaken

> > Maybe that 's the reason why my Preditor wu's all have a higher claimed
> then
> > granted credit, some even 2x.
> > So all I have to do is make sure I'm listing to mp3's when Boinc runs a
> > benchmark ;)
>
> If you are running other projects, you definitely want to adjust your cache.
> With your settings, you are guaranteed to get more work than you can complete
> on time... :(
>
> And listening to mp3s while benchmarking will have little to no impact on the
> results. The benchmark results like the actual processing time are not based
> on wall clock time, but CPU time. So having another application running will
> only slow the process down, not affect the results much.
>

Yes, I also run seti and predictor, but I have no work from predictor (as many may know) and 40 wu's from seti. CPDN and seti get the same amount of cpu time (50-50 for now) so all the seti wu's should be finished in 5 days (not even close to 100 ;) )

I think the CPDN server has more faith in my pc's crunching abilities then the seti server has ;)

> that's based on the boinc benchmark code, so if you got a higher than usual
> benchmark score from boinc it will "overestimate" the amount of work you can
> get
( I hope it was underestimating so the wu's get done in 20 days :) )

Thanks for the reply

I set boinc to have a cache between 10 and 20 days, but now I see there are 4 CPDN Wu on my pc (PIV 3.0GHz). One Wu should take from 20 to 25 days so I now have CPDN work for about 100 days.

I has only been about 2 months since my last math exam, and I believe 100 isn't between 10 and 20.

So, if I may ask, what is wrong here? (or what did I do wrong? skip math class maybe? :) )

Thanks Thyme Lawn, I think it's something close to number 3 because:
Boinc was first running fine when I put it in suspend
some time later I choose file, exit (Called closing Boinc, not killing I believe)
When I restarted Boinc (No pc restart) the CPDN processes was still running, given the error, also giving an error when Detaching from CPDN
But why did I still get the error after killing CPDN (taskmanager), deleting the directory and re-attaching?
