41) Message boards : Number crunching : backup and restore WU (models) (Message 7424)

There is a utility called dobkCPDN that will do this automatically on Win XP. It is officially a beta version but I think development has stopped. I have been using it without real problems for a while now. It does sometimes crash, but the crash is always harmless and has never caused damage to CPDN or anything else. The link to it is on the "classic" CPDN boards, I think, so I can't find a link at the moment (boards down). However, google suggests:

Hope that helps.

I had a series of master file fetch failed errors this evening up to about 6:30pm. Then it began working again. Seems OK now.

Perhaps just a server glitch?

Try again.

Perhaps you are confusing model days with real days? The model saves every 144 timesteps, or 3 model days. This will probably be at intervals of between 5 mins and 20 mins actual elapsed time, depending on the speed of your computer. As long as your computer processes CP for this minimum time it will make progress. There is no need to leave it on for a minimum of 3 real days, although, of course, the longer you leave it on for, the more progress it will make.

General advice for this project is that you do leave your computer on for long periods, especially overnight, to allow it to make a significant contribution to the project.

Of course, while it is on, you can continue to use it normally and CP will have little or no noticable impact.

I must be one of the lucky ones. My two machines continue to trickle without any problems.

I don't think this is a Pentium M issue. My Dell Latitude D800 has a 1.6GHz Pentium M and it seems to be running under BOINC quite contentedly (now half way through Phase 2 on first model).

Thanks all for your responses.

My video drivers were the latest available but they must have got corrupted somehow. I downloaded them again from Dell and reinstalled them over the top of existing ones and everything seems to have gone back to normal. A second problem which I thought indicated incipient failure of my screen has gone away too!

49) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Home/School machine association won't stick (Message 3457)
Posted 8 Sep 2004 by KeeperC
Post:
I have a machine I'm trying to assign to school location so I can give it different prefs than my home machine. There is a combo box at the bottom of the machine specific page allowing this selection and an update button next to it. I can choose school and update, and I assume this is what I ought to do to change the association. Unfortunately, after I do this the machine continues to use home prefs, and next time I visit the site the box has reverted to home.

How can I get it to stick?

Still not sure I understand.

As far as I can see, I have the following:

CPDN classic rank = 651 out of 63281
CPDN Boinc World rank = 1,124 of 7,624
CPDN Boinc rank in UK = 136 of 950
CPDN Boinc rank in Team United Kingdom = 20 of 78

Rank in my sig is 168?

Thanks for the responses.

My system is a Dell D800 laptop with a 1.6GHz Pentium M and 1GB RAM running Win XP SP2. The graphics card is an nVidia GeForce4 4200 Go with 64MB RAM. The video BIOS and driver are the most recent available from the Dell download site. I checked the nVidia site and they have nothing available for this card - they say updates should be obtained from the OEM, in this case Dell.

Post:
When I right click on a workunit and choose \"show graphics\" I get a popup window titled \"nVidia OpenGL Driver\" which says:

Driver components mis-match. Exit is the only option

I have to choose OK, and when I do, the model uploads with error status and a new one down loads and starts.

I\'ve just tried this twice, so its repeatable.

What should I do to fix it?

Thanks

My Athlon XP 3000+ 512MB running SuSe 9.1 is currently getting 2.91 s/TS.

I'm a linux novice running this on my first self build - I've really no idea whether I've optimised performance, but this number seems in line with yours.

Haven't discovered system guard yet. I'll check it out.

The log says "daily quota exceeded" - have you downloaded multiple models for this host already today? Check your results page and see if they have been returned with error.

&gt; I can not see the link you provided it's in a private area.
&gt;
&gt; I would guess that you are attached to multiple copies of the project or that
&gt; 2 BOINC processes are running. An extra BOINC process seems the most likely
&gt; since that is known to cause workunits to corrupt.
&gt; <br>John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- <a> href="http://www.boinc.dk/index.php?page=user_statistics&amp;project=cpdn&amp;userid=191"&gt;<img> border="0" height="80" src="http://191.cpdn.sig.boinc.dk?188"&gt;</a>
&gt;
&gt;

John,

Thanks for the suggestion. When I installed 4.05, I installed to a different location than the earlier, beta version, which was consequently still lurking on the system. So I manually deleted the old version.

Then, a little later, I got the fortran error reported several times elsewhere. I uninstalled 4.05 using add/remove program, but without detatching from the project, and re-installed again. However, the model was still producing multiple workunit errors (although no more fortran errors). At midnight it would download a model and a few minutes later send it back with an error and download another. It would do this repeatedly until the daily limit was reached.

So now I have detatched and uninstalled. Tonight I will look for remnants and delete them, reboot and then reinstall. I'll see if that fixes things.
