Ceri,

If you are doing what Honza suggests and all you get is an empty window where the graphics should appear, it is possibly because your graphics driver doesn't support OpenGL or is somehow corrupted. Try upgrading to the latest graphics drivers.

Does this mean it is a windows problem?

CPDN uses at least one DLL, and it may be this that failed to initialise. Perhaps a re-install may work?

Is this a global figure or for western economies only? If western only, it would seem only to reflect the export of manufacturing and other primary industries to developing nations. I doubt energy intensity of GDP is declining globally. Presumably, across most of the developing world it is increasing rapidly.

This only looks good. In reality, this is true only because US, Europe and other developed nations are already consuming unsustainable levels of energy and in the rest of the world continued population growth is overwhelmingly producing desperately poor people with almost no access to energy at all. These energy poor people just about counteract the effect of consumption growth in China, India and the like. Also, unfortunately, the Earth's resources do not scale with population.

Boinc runs exponential backoff when clients fail to connect to servers to prevent a massive buildup of pent up comms demand swamping the servers when they come back up. Could the maximum number of WU also be made to back off exponentially? I.e. five today, only three tomorrow, just one the next day, another one two days later, and no more for a week, etc. This way, machines that simply chew up WUs would soon be timed out for quite long periods. On the other hand, machines with temporary problems that are quite quickly fixed would soon get back on track.

Pete B has done a great job of running this comparison and including geophi's results. Honza suggests that we might look at a whole host of other cross machine comparisons. My question is this: Have we already run any of these comparisons as part of the standard experiment? If so, could the Oxford team release results from a few of them to volunteers to look at like Pete B has done in this case?

&gt; &gt; As far as I know the upload server list is still the one posted <a>
&gt; href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1208&amp;post5913#5913"&gt;here</a>
&gt; &gt; by Carl. Specifying a list of allowed servers is okay, but it won't
&gt; cater for
&gt; &gt; any servers that are added in the future. If possible it's probably
&gt; better to
&gt; &gt; open up port 80 for the BOINC program you're running.
&gt;
&gt; &gt;Thanks, Thyme. I went to Carl's server list and added them to ZA's
&gt; 'trusted zone' and RPC's are working fine--requests, trickles, downloads.
&gt; Opening port 80 would be cleaner, but I wouldn't know how or if I was
&gt; protecting it.
&gt;

I don't think you need to put the CPDN servers into Zone Alarm's trusted zone - I don't. This just gives them more access to you than you probably want to give. Just leave them in the internet zone. Also, you don't need to open any specific port - zone alarm handles that for you.

All you need to do is allow BOINC to communicate with the internet (no need to allow server priviledges, although it will ask). You can do this manually, or answer the question Zone Alarm asks the first time Boinc tries to communicate.

Actually, you must already have done this since you have trickled twice already.

&gt; When we can eventually buy the mugs, they will be even better than
&gt; certificates. You can only have 1 certificate in 1 place, because multiple
&gt; copies would look like fakes. If you boast too much about your own
&gt; certificates, this can appear arrogant or boring. Few people will say 'WOW!'
&gt;
&gt; But we will be able to buy multiple mugs, openly advertising both cpdn and our
&gt; own superior capabilities without needing to say a word. The mugs will solve
&gt; dilemmas about birthday presents for both children and adults for a whole
&gt; year. The elegant design will attract the attention of aesthetes, and everyone
&gt; who ever has a hot drink will be amazed by the heat sensitivity. Everyone will
&gt; say 'WOW!'
&gt;
&gt; The photos of them are unfortunately on the phpbb forum.
&gt;
&gt;
&gt;

But does anyone actually have any idea when, exactly, these mugs will become available and who is sourcing them for us?

Post:
&gt; do they exist like in old seti@home there you can print a certificate of your

&gt;

The Statsfreakz site offered certificates for completion of workunits at various levels on CPDN Classic:

http://www.statsfreakz.net/climate_prediction/certificates.php

I'm not aware of any equivalent for Boinc, but there may well be some generic (not CPDN specific) provider of something similar.

Except that Expt 2 uses a coupled oceam model, CM3, requiring up to an order of magnitude more processing.

&gt; &gt; It's absolutely crucial that we get the cpdn forum back up and running

But it is hard to have such a long outage, especially when one of the reasons we like CPDN is the excellent forum. Also, it is very bad timimg given all the recent publicity.

I'm sure you and the OU are doing all you can. From our point of view, though, I agree with Graham - this is urgent!

The path is to a page in the CPDN PHP forum. Unfortunately, because of a security risk, that forum has temporarily been taken offline. I hope that it will be back soon, and then the link should work.

I can't remember the link to the download utility directly.

&gt; You need to stop the service; otherwise there will be write locks on some
&gt; files. I don't know the command line way of stopping &amp; starting a
&gt; service, but I know there is one.
&gt;
&gt; A restore is as easy as stopping the service, and overwritting the BOINC
&gt; directory with your backup, and starting again.
&gt;
&gt; Personally I only backup after every phase, so I do it manually.
&gt;

The utility I use stops the application using RPC (what ever this is), makes the backup, then restarts the application. I assume, but don't know, that this is true if it is running as a service, too. I don't run CPDN as a service.
