Hi all. Trying to upload one stubborn zip file, but no success. Is their server down or just overloaded?

Thanks.

Lots of computation errors on my end. All 8-9 of them failed. One lasted about 10 hours, but the rest lasted just a few minutes. Oh well. This is what the moderators expected would happen. Hope things can get fixed up soon. Looks like a very worthwhile project.

That’s great that the WWA folks were able to do this so quickly!

There’s a great write up on the simulation on RealClimate.

Dave, that's not a surprise at all. It would be interesting to see how much less likely this would be under a pre-industrial climate and how much more likely this scale and intensity of an event would be under the RCP4.5, RCP6, and RCP8.5 scenarios. As far as I can see, the RCP2.6 is pretty much impossible to attain at this juncture.

Regardless, this must be a wake-up call for us North Americans.

The all-time Canadian heat record is in danger of being broken during this heat wave. Already, temperatures in the lower 40s Celsius are being recorded and temperatures as high as 47 C are forecast in some locations. The all-time Canadian record is 45 C on July 5, 1937 in Midale and Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan. Many stations will record their own all-time records during this event.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/western-canada-heatwave-1.6081519

The Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for the Pacific region with Environment and Climate Change Canada has stated that the extreme nature of this heat wave is a direct result of human-caused climate change, which I would accept as being true. However, do the people with CPDN think there would be a point to do an attribution simulation on this event sometime down the road to do a quantification of this?

I managed to snag four WUs of the new SAFR50s from HAPPI, but sadly two of them so far got computational errors (signal 11, segment stuff yet again). I would really like to help with this project given its importance, but I think the other two will eventually fail, too. My computer isn't overtaxed with processes, but it is old. Not sure what you would advise. Hopefully the people who take over my WUs have success.

:(
8) Message boards : Number crunching : Server status page shows different numbers for tasks in progress (Message 62331)

Post:
Hi all. Hope you're all staying well during this time.

Speaking of tasks in progress, I noticed that it is very likely that many of these tasks aren't being worked on, as their numbers haven't decreased much in months. When the deadlines are reached and the tasks aren't completed, do the tasks get sent to someone else who will get them done?

Thanks.

Will the simulations that weren't run due to the server backlog be placed back in the rotation when things are less hectic? Wouldn't it be a good idea to have more simulations so as to improve the ensembles for each project? A more robust number would help reduce the uncertainties in the model projections.

Hi all. I noticed on the server status page that the tasks ready to send is just over 4500 now, but yesterday it was at 11,000 or so. Was there a mass failure of tasks, did some tasks get cancelled, or did a large number of additional computers become active all of a sudden and snatched up these tasks?

Some have said that if you have many zip files to upload but they're not getting through to put your tasks on suspended status so they won't fail and wait until the zip files have been successfully uploaded. I only have about 12 files pending, but I've suspended mine until they make enough server space.

Moderators, is this what you would suggest?

I completely agree, Les. The way CPDN has evolved seems to be the way not only academia studies extreme weather and climate events, but how weather offices do as well. By developing a range of possible and probable outcomes as a result of various emissions scenarios (RCP25, RCP45, RCP85, etc.), it gives scientists, forecasters, and policy-makers a better understanding of what society is to face. Academic studies are frequently examined and written about in the popular media, too, if the media are doing their jobs properly, in a way the public can understand. Sadly, many media bureaus have drastically cut their science and environment desks, which is critically damaging to society, in part because false news gains traction without having a bulwark to refute it.

Hi all.

What does this error message mean? This WU was functioning perfectly for a long time and suddenly ended with a computation error.

Interesting! I've done some research on ENSO for many university courses (I've got a Master's specializing in atmospheric science) and have found that Southern Africa typically sees drier and warmer conditions from El Nino events. That period of 2015-16 was a moderate El Nino event. It will be fascinating to see what this simulation shows!

That's understandable. The models have become much more complex, too. The main thing is to get the results fed into the system, which I am completely satisfied with. Glad the project is up and running at full steam again, too!

When I first started simulating years ago, I used to be able to show graphics for the experiments. It was really cool, seeing the rain and clouds, the temperatures, etc. Now, there are no graphics anymore. Is that due to computer power use or something like that, or are the simulations done differently now?
