41) Questions and Answers : Windows : Visual Fortran Error (Message 27288)

Post:
I don\'t know what caused the error, but the \'end-of-file during read\' seems to indicate some sort of I/O error on a temp file.

I think if you could restart your WU from a recent backup, it would probably not experience the error again.

I tried that; it refused. Only after running the Windows Installer Cleanup tool I could install 5.8.8.

I think in future backups I will also backup the C:\\Windows\\Downloaded Installations folder.
43) Questions and Answers : Windows : Restore from backup after new BOINC version installed (Message 27193)

Post:
I recently had to do a restore after a model crashed. I remember that I was on BOINC version 5.8.8 when I did the backup, but later upgraded to 5.8.11. Then I did the restore without thinking about the BOINC version.

Now 5.8.15 is available, but I cannot uninstall the current version, nor can I install the new version (which performs an implicit uninstall). Reason: the installer for 5.8.8 is no longer available (somewhere at C:\\Windows\\Downloaded Installations\\...).

Just if someone else gets into the same situation, here is how to get out of it.

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Run it from the Start Programs menu, then search for the BOINC entry. Select it and click on [Remove], then [Exit]. You should now be able to install BOINC again.

I don\'t think that either Ad-Aware or Spybot would prevent BOINC or CPDN to update. In fact, looking at your current model I see that it trickled twice yesterday.

Or did I misunderstand your question? Where does it not update?

OK, but for us dumb volunteers a little popup or two lines of instructions might help. I got this message saying I could update. I did not find any clear instructions on updating on the site and I thought BOINC would take care of itself.

I don\'t know what message you got - in BOINC? Did BOINC initiate the update, or did you download the installer from the website?

If BOINC initiated the update by itself, then it should really end its tasks, and shut down itself before updating itself, as hundreds of other programs do.

If it was a website download, then I would have thought it natural to shut the application down before updating it. But you are right, perhaps a little note at the download site would help some users...

You should close any programs that do file updates before shutting down Windows, otherwise there is a chance that these files get corrupted if the application does not have enough time to close all files.

Posted 24 Jan 2007 by Profile old_user17289
Post:
The important part in above post is that BOINC must not be running when taking a backup.

There are multiple ways how to actually take a backup; either simply copy the entire BOINC folder to another location, or use a backup program such as Windows ntbackup program, or a 3rd-party application like Acronis True Image. Even WinZip or another compression program can be useful.

Backups should be taken on a regular basis, e.g. once a week. This help to recover a model if it should crash.

Since the WUs are so long, and very work-intensive, there is always a chance that a model crashes at some point. In order to be able to restore a crashed model, regular backups are recommended, e.g. on a weekly basis. Make sure that BOINC is not running when taking the backup.

If I simply use a different internet computer for the final upload will this work...

Yes, that should work. Simply transfer the entire BOINC folder to the other computer (same location as on current computer), then re-install the BOINC manager, and let it complete.

If you transfer via CD-ROM, make sure the files don\'t get set to read-only. Put them into a ZIP file, or use the Windows Backup utility to put them into a BKF file for the transfer.

Hello, and welcome to the CPDN forum!

I also see that \"skeleton\" graphic all of a sudden. Don\'t know what it means, but I don\'t worry about it.

Regarding crashed models; I also had several in the past - some crashing very near completion of the model. It helps a great deal if you do regular backups of your model; in many cases you can restore, and just continue from the point of the crash. Not always, though, some models simply cannot get past a certain failure point.

I do a backup about once a week. The important thing is that computation of the model and BOINC are not running, then simply backup the entire Program Files\\BOINC folder. In the past I used WinZip for this, now I use Acronis True Image. But the Windows Backup program will do nicely.

Backups shouldn\'t be part of an application, but part of a general system safety and security measure. If all application came with their own backup software, your system would grow double in size.

One professional backup software (e.g. Acronis True Image), or even Windows\' own backup tool should let you do all the backups you need.

It is useful to take a regular backup of your progressing WU. See the \"sticky\" thread on backups. In addition note that
a) backups must only be taken when BOINC is not running;
b) backups to another HD are the only way out in a case like yours.
