That was quick - thanks! I will check these two files.

Earlier this month I noticed that BOINC Manager is often unresponsive or slow. Today, after defragmenting and Windows reboot I had a look at my stdoutdae.txt file, and found the following messages, constantly repeated since June 09

Can\'t rename current state file to previous state file; Access is denied. (0x5)
Can\'t delete previous state file; Access is denied. (0x5)

I suspect that this is the reason for the slowdown, but what could be the problem? What is that \"state file\" mentioned in the message?

(Running on Windows XP SP3)

This is a common problem; I get many sites turned to Japanese, and there is rarely a way to force it to English. The reason is that these sites are sniffing your IP address, and then determine the \"best\" language to serve you. Obviously they are wrong many times, but they won\'t let you change the language manually.

I have not seen this behavior on the BOINC or CPDN sites, so I\'m not sure what the OP is referring to.

I have just experienced the same today. After stopping the WU and BOINC Manager, taking a backup, then restarting it again, the fog has cleared up.

27) Questions and Answers : Windows : Confused about new WU (Message 32728)

Last week I\'ve just finished a long WU that ran for almost a year. Now I have allowed it to download another WU, and this one is quite different. The application is called \'UK Met Office HadSM3 Slab Model 5.06\' (hadsm3fub_03l1_005930898_2).

It appears to run from 1810~2050, and it seems to run quite fast. After 4 days of running it has already completed 12.5%. However, when looking at the current processing year, I see that we are only in the middle of 1816 - that is hardly 12%!

Is it BOINC that is so completely off estimating the completion percentage? Or will it just get faster and faster towards the end...?

Just curious...

It also helps to take regular backups (about once a week) of your BOINC folder (while BOINC Manager is not running). A failure such as yours can then easily be recovered from the backup. I\'ve saved many WUs that way.

My current model needs to press H first, then Z and 8.

I just upgraded BOINC 5.10.20 to 5.10.28, and I performed the following steps

  1. BOINC Manager; Activity | Suspend
  2. File | Exit
  3. Backup Program Files\\BOINC folder
  4. Run installer boinc_5.10.28_windows_intelx86.exe
  5. Re-launch BOINC Manager; Activity | Run always

Thanks for the clarification.

I did have other WUs in the past that crashed, but were able to complete via backups. These were marked as \'Success\' after the final upload. This must have changed with the newer models/software, so that\'s why I was concerned. Not any more...

I just came back from vacation and found that my WU has stopped running (result ID 6181611). I forgot to check the logs before I cleaned out the BOINC folders and reinstalled the latest version of BOINC.

The WU had once crashed before, but I allowed it to resume from a backup. However, it seems the WU is still in a crashed state.

Has the WU successfully completed? The image in the result seems to indicate that it goes through to 2080, but the state still indicates a client error.

When you backup the BOINC folder, make sure that the project is not running at the time. If you did that, then restoring the BOINC folder should let you run the project from exactly the point (minus a few minutes) where it was backed up.

CPDN project slowing down may be caused by extreme fragmentation. I defragment and backup regularly, about once a week.

Will wait for news on the new server :)

But there are real crashes occurring from time to time. To avoid losing an entire model - especially in an advanced stage - it helps a lot to do a regular backup of the entire BOINC folder. Make sure that BOINC & CPDN is not running, then backup BOINC about once every few days.

As far as I know, results that are advanced as far as yours, the data is definitely usable and used.

Regarding backups, I did weekly backups in the past, but after I had several crashes in the last few weeks, going to repeat an entire week of processing became too much. So I do now a backup after every trickly (about every 1½ days).

Important: when you do the backup, the model and BOINC manager must not be running. Backup the entire C:\\Program Files\\BOINC folder.

I too had in the past crashed models that I was able to recover from backups. The CPDN website shows the model status as \'Client Error\' until the final result is uploaded, then it is changed to \'Success\'. All error information disappear after the final upload.
