1) Questions and Answers : Windows : What happened to my WU? (Message 38026)
Posted 24 Sep 2009 by Profile old_user17289
Post:
Just an update: when I came back from my vacation after 2½ weeks, the WU has now well passed the original point of failure, and is now processing the year 2025.

This is thanks to making regular backups, and keeping them all for a while!

The WU has been restarted at 2010, and has been running for a while now. Last night it sent the first trickle since the restart. At the end of the trickle-up it issued this message

Any idea what this means...?

It seems that it just finished the year 2020, and uploaded a ZIP file, then just stopped.

I made a backup shortly before that, and now restored it. Same thing happened.

Any suggestion what happened to the WU...?

I always have CPDN set to 'not allow new tasks'. I only allow new tasks when a model has successfully completed.

This does not directly answer your question.

Most of the people running CPDN do regular backups of the BOINC folder, so if a process crashes, it can be easily restored and continue to run.

I do a backup about once a week, or every 10 model years. Naturally, CPDN/BOINC must not be running when the backup is taken.
8) Questions and Answers : Windows : Seem unable to start new tasks - what\'s gone wrong? (Message 36771)

You shouldn't uninstall the previous version of BOINC, especially if you are using a 5.x version. The upgrade will migrate your data to a new folder under C:\Documents and Settings.

Version 6.2.19 seems no longer available for download on the Berkely.edu site. I have just upgraded to the latest version 6.6.20, and it seems to run fine. Earlier this year I had a bit of a problem with version 6.4.x, so I stayed with 6.2.19 until the upgrade today.

P.S. be sure to make a backup of your BOINC folder before you start the upgrade.

What version did you install, and what version did you have previously?

Did you take a backup before you installed the beta?

Thank you for your reply and advice.

I did feel the need for some \"interesting times\", so I downloaded and installed 6.4.5. However, the first WU it downloaded crashed immediately, so I gave up on the interesting times and installed 6.2.19. The new WU now runs fine.

This week another long CPDN WU will complete. I have set BOINC not to download any new WUs automatically.

So, I think this is the perfect time to upgrade my BOINC client from 5.x to 6.x

My question: with no WU active, is it better to uninstall 5.x before installing 6.x, or is it the same to just upgrade 5.x to 6.x ?

P.S. (this is Windows XP)

Be aware that some of the ClimatePrediction WUs can be extremely long.
13) Questions and Answers : Windows : Upgrade from 5.x to 6.2.18 lost previous work (Message 35659)

Since you made a backup, I think there is a good chance that you can recover the previous WU.

- Uninstall 6.x
- Reinstall 5.x
- Restore your backup

I think you don\'t uninstall 5.x when upgrading to 6.x, but I am not 100% sure, as I continue with 5.x until my current WU is complete.

July update 951748 and this week\'s 956803 are causing connection problems with old versions of the ZoneAlarm firewall (6.5.645.000~7.0.482.000).

Solution: upgrade to 7.0.483.000 or 8.0.059.000.
15) Questions and Answers : Windows : What is this model date? (Message 34747)
Posted 26 Aug 2008 by Profile old_user17289
Post:
Personally I think it\'s more logical for any date or time format to go from largest unit to smallest (eg days;hours;minutes;seconds) or from smallest to largest. The CPDN model date format does do this.

Exactly; I would very much more like to see 1993-09-02 than the confusing 02/09/1993 (I don\'t mind the dashes or slashes).

The project is English, the models come from the British (UK) Met Office, and so the dates are British format: day / month / year.

It is, indeed. My model date now shows 27/02/1996

The dates are not derived from the OS date system.
To do so would confuse the issue when physicsts start to use the models.

What I mean is to display it in my Windows specified form - in my case I would want to see 1996-02-27. How the dates are kept internally is not my concern.

When I open the graphics window (to see where I am in the process), it shows a model date 02/09/1993.

Now what does this date mean - have I recently finished a year (Feb 09 1993), or am I going to finish a year soon (02 Sept 1993)?

The format I would like to see there is the date format I have specified for Windows and all applications to use (Control Panel | Regional Options).

Wouldn\'t that make much more sense for everyone?

Thank you :)

That\'s good to hear; I wouldn\'t want to install v6 if you had to reboot Windows to start the BOINC manager.

Still, I will wait until my current WU is complete, then change the backup procedure.

Does the new BOINC installer/converter allow the data file location to be specified? It would be great if the data files could be placed on a different HD.

My suspicion is that it was Copernic Desktop Search. I have stopped the indexing, and it hasn\'t happened since. I need to find out how to exempt the BOINC folder from being indexed.
