1) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Merging old dead computers (Message 34473)
Posted 3 Aug 2008 by old_user171496
Post:
A merge facility has always been available.
You\'ll see it at the bottom of each computer page, BUT it will only merge identical computers. It bases this on the cpu description, and the amount of ram. After 30 days, computers that haven\'t been heard from are hidden, with an option to make them visible.

\"It bases this on the cpu description, and the amount of ram.\" Except this doesn\'t always work. Since Suse changed the amount of extracted CPU info to the minimum - \"Authentic AMD CPU,\" it makes it impossible to merge even 2 identical computers with more info extracted. So this plan doesn\'t work.

I was forced to reset a couple of my BOINC systems because of stuck hangs, and the resulting Suse1, unchanged from the orig Suse1, will not merge. This gets very frustrating. In other cases, I tend to upgrade processors and wind up with quite a few old systems on the full list. I don\'t understand how this helps the CPDN system, and it makes tracking all of the systems a PITA. Finally, I have one old system with zero results because I couldn\'t get the Linux emulation under FreeBSD to work. This really should be deleted, but I can\'t do that either. What is important to myself and others is the summary display of results, not how you keep internal records. I\'d like to see an update to that enabling the *user* to determine what to merge for summary use only, keeping the raw data separate if that is what you need. It would be a \'virtual\' list of systems which make sense to the user and would have no impact to the internal mapping. All that would be required is a user specified mapping that says \"Add these N units of <system numbers> and display them as \"Suse1.\" I urge you to consider this function for a future update to the software.
BillN

I agree with Bill N., This would soothe the frustration of many of your crunchers. I have 4 Boxes and on some projects it showes me with as many as 11!

You have to understand that I had a massive power surge because of a lighting strike very near my home the night of Dec 27. Despite a $70 surge protector, it screwed up my old Mobo and CPU chip. I ordered a new INTEL D865PERL P4 Soc 478 Mobo from Zipzoomfly.com for $107 ship incl, because I have a couple spare 3.0-3.2 Ghz P4 CPU chips. I took my box to a good local shop and they installed the new Mobo and checked the restod the system out for damage. I got the box back about 8 days later. So I didn\'t do any processing for over a week.
Then when I reloaded all of the software and restarted BONIC my system downloaded about 90 files from all of my projects. Including 3 from CPDN. Knowing that I probably could not process all 3 by the deadline I aborted 2. Last night I see that I downloaded another CPDN file. As far as speed goes, my old CPU chip was a 1.9Ghz w/ a 250Mhz FSB board, w/512Mb RD800 RAM. Now I have a 3.2Ghz P4 Extreem W/Hyperthreading & a 800Mhz FSB w/2Gb DDR3200 RAM.
Here are all my CPDN msgs from BONIC:

How do you copy the system response msgs, there is no function to do that as far as I can tell. Right clicking on a highlighted msg does nothing.

What model dates have your 2 models reached? First of all I only have 1 model working. File # hadcm3ohe_1dcf_05712289_1. I have used 16:53:47 CPU hours on it so far and completed .402% of the calculations. There are no adverse Msg\'s for the file. When it or I communicate with the CPDN homepage there are the usual 4 lines of communication and the last is \"Scheduler request suceeded\". I have even suspended all of the other projects for a day to let CPDN \"catch up\". Still no difference. The last comm with the home page was at 1:55:01-1:55:06, with the same result.

I do not have a firewall problem as I am still using the same one I had before I changed my Motherboard and upgraded my CPU processor from a 1.9Ghz to 3.2Ghz P4. All of my other 6 BONIC projects commuinicate correctly on a regular basis.

As I stated earlier, I only aborted those 2 files because my box downloaded them when I restarted it after the Upgrade. I didn\'t think that I could complete them (all 3) in the 6.5 months I had left along with the WUs from my other six Bonic projects.
Ref: http://www.boincsynergy.com/images/stats/comb-4156.jpg

No Problem here, if no one will help me relolve this I will just abort the present file and discontinue doing work for people who don\'t care about those trying to help their project. I\'m sure I will find another one to help within minutes. Need help by this Friday, 1-19-07, 12 PM EST.

I had been having problems with my old motherboarda and the 1.9 Ghz P4 chip that was in it. Then I lost my primary hard drive. I got a new 80 GB Hard Drive, a new INTEL P4 Socket 478 Mobo at ZipZoomFly and a 3.2 Ghz P4E CPU chip. When I restarted my box up and recommectedto BONIC CPDN sent me 3 files one right after the other. I knew that there was no way that I would finish 3 files in time so I aborted 2 of them. I am getting ready to take on 2-3 more BONIC projects and I wanted to be sure all files get processed and on time. Still doesn\'t explain why I haven\'t gotten any credit for 2 weeks.

I must have a problem then, CPDN hasn\'t givenme any credit since Dec 27th. That is the day I started up my new 3.2 Ghz P4 box. I started with a clean drive and down loaded all new WU\'s but I still have not gotten and credit from CPDN. Who/where do I go to ask for help to fix this.

I had been credit on a regular daily/weekly basis up to that point. Don\'t know what to check next. My other 5 BONIC projects still give me daily updates.
