21) Message boards : Number crunching : Some PCs Trickling, Some Not (Message 41405)

The home page is indeed up (there was a faulty network switch, which I've replaced), although the phpBB board has developed some sort of bizarre fault and is still down. Other servers are full but I am emptying them as fast as I can. My rough calculations were that they would last until next year but they have filled up more rapidly than planned.

Various servers have failed over the holiday period - please refer to the news thread in "Number Crunching":

Any updates on this issue from the project staff?

Not from project staff, but I have updated the news thread as mentioned in the post above.
I might be able to get in to Oxford tomorrow, and if the problem is something that does not require spare parts or infrastructure changes then some machines should subsequently start running again.

Thank you, gentlemen.

By the way, I just had an idea for something that might bring climateapps1 back on line, although if it works it might not be successful for 24 hours or so.

You should be OK for uploads from the 25th; if the problem with kraken is just a power failure then it will be up within a few days and climateapps1 shouldn't be much longer.

If the project is left without any maintenance for such long period, then we got from the staff the worst Christmas gift - true bouquet of permanent and growing problems.

These problems are hardly permanent. However, they need staff to fix them, and CPDN currently has no computing staff whatsoever. I don't work for CPDN any more and have not done so since 1/12/10, although I will do what I can whilst we wait for the new recruits to be appointed. Hopefully this will be within one month as both posts have been filled.

Very good tip, but kraken does not respond , because (IMO) he has crashed again.

It certainly looks like that, as I can't get in to that machine, although it was up yesterday. I note that two other machines in the same rack are also down, which suggests that there may be a more widespread problem than just one machine crashing - perhaps a loss of power to that particular rack.
If I get chance to go in during the holidays I will do so, although I'm not in Oxford at the moment and can't do so immediately.

If you put this URL into your browser:

http://kraken.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdn_cgi/file_upload_handler

...and you then see this:

<data_server_reply>
    <status>1</status>
    <message>no command</message>
</data_server_reply>

Then all is working as it should.
That machine is definitely accepting uploads - huge quantities of data are coming in. By the time my successor finally arrives they'll have a lot of data to shift.

Replaced the handlr with handler
Replaced the handlrr with handler
...for all zip files in client_state.xml.

Uploads are going finally.

Thanks - apologies for not getting back to you faster.

It means that the URL in your client_state.xml file is wrong, probably because the mystery mis-spelling bug has struck, or that one of the file_upload_handler aliases has not been defined in httpd.conf for this server.

It's very annoying that BOINC client says that the file_upload_handler is missing, which is not the case here.

The script is in fact running at the moment.

Thanks for your assistance, Mo.
The problem at the moment is there is a lot of demand on the database for connections. We have only one database and so when it reaches the maximum number any other script is refused. Unfortunately, that has often been the credit script recently, which means that I have to try running it manually.
New staff have been interviewed so we hope to get some people in soon who might be able to deal with this.

I didn't rebuild the application before generating the most recent workunits, as it's for the same sort of experiment that was previously done with that model and we're a bit short-staffed at the moment.

Briefly I just wanted to know if it is worth my transferring my home PC to your new regional experiment instead of the CP.net I've had running for a long time now.

Please keep running what you're currently running - it's all useful!

It is intentional; my instructions were to set it as such. As for why, that would indeed be a matter for the physicists to answer.

I'm trying to use vista parental controls. When it has notified me I'm blocking the climate modules I've added exceptions. So far I've added:
famous_6.11
hadam3p_eu_6.05
hadam3p_saf_6.05
hadcm3trans_6.04
hadsm3_6.07

I've re-enabled your system, so we can see if that works.
