1) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Amount of data downloaded/uploaded per month? (Message 26647)

I was in a seminar today, and the speaker was comparing this project with one they have set up. They said that on this project there is about 8 MBytes/month of data transfer (I think they said uploaded, computer-to-server). Is this correct? How much is typically downloaded and uploaded, per month?
2) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Should I continue with project running OK on PPC G4? (Message 26646)

The sulphur models were a short term project to get infomation on sulphate particles for starting the Coupled Ocean models.

Short-term? They take a year or so to run!
These Coupled Ocean models started about a year ago, so the sulphur models aren\'t really needed now.

But I only downloaded the model that was offered (this sulphur model) on 18 Feb 2006. So you\'re saying it was unneeded even before it was sent to me?
The extra info was included in the upload at the end of phase 1, so your recent upload will be added to the pool of data.

Could you confirm that my uploaded data was received okay? And you\'re saying it will be useful? And are you also saying that I should disconnect from the project now?

My sulphur simulation seems to be progressing, slowly, but surely. It\'s on an iBook G4 and only runs when I am connected to the electricity, and I don\'t leave it on at night. For a few months I didn\'t have it running at all. A week or two ago it uploaded some results, having reached 20%. It seemed to do that successfully.

But now I see that since April the Mac has not been supported, and many people bemoaned having to trash their projects, as if it was all a waste of time. But what has happened to the data that was uploaded from my computer just recently, which seemed to have been accepted? Is it going to be useful? Should I continue?
4) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Can I transfer a project to a different machine? (Message 22526)

(I forgot to say that both machines are running Mac OS X, and I will be able to connect them over a network or firewire cable before I dispose of the old one.)

Follow-up: When I started up the new Mac for the first time, it asked me if I had stuff on an existing Mac that I wanted to migrate across, and then asked me to connect the two machines by Firewire and transferred everything across, including apps, accounts, prefs, histories, bookmarks, address books... (nice). The point is that I didn\'t have to do anything and the BOINC project started up on the new machine where it left off on the old one. One thing I thought was then important to do was to close down BOINC on the old machine straight away when I started up, and delete it all, WITHOUT aborting or detacting from the project on the old machine, because that would have affected the ongoing simulation on the new machine.

Hope that helps others facing with this situation.

Yes. I suggest zipping up the entire BOINC folder and burning it to CD/DVD (probably DVD given the size of the sulphur model), then extracting it to the folder location on the new PC. Or copying it across the network if both PCs will be online at the same time. Then reinstalling BOINC (the same version would be safest) on the new PC to the location you extracted the BOINC folder.

(I forgot to say that both machines are running Mac OS X, and I will be able to connect them over a network or firewire cable before I dispose of the old one.) So what you are saying is that I just install BOINC on the new machine, and then copy the BOINC folder from the old to new machine, and then the crunching just continues on the new machine without a hiccup?

In a few weeks/month I am going to get rid of the computer that is presently running a sulphur model (and has a long way to go). Is it possible to transfer the project to my new machine at that time, so that all that crunching is not wasted?
