41) Message boards : Number crunching : Why can\'t my pc crunch cpdn wus? (Message 7275)

Finally my computer seems to be running stable and is happily crunching on a cpdn work unit, so far without any errors or crashes. The solution was to mount a cooling fan inside the case to maintain flow throughout, and perhaps also the ram cooling I bought.
To top it all, I just ordered some Arctic Silver thermal paste.

I thank you all for your suggestions and info, it was a great help! :-D

Today I bought some ram cooling sinks, I'll see if that changes anything.

After having run some tests and read the Questions and Problems board, I've come to the conclusion that the problem IS overheating. I've now had the pc running with the case plates off for several days without a single error or restart. But as soon as I put them on, it runs from 1 minute to a few hours and then crashes. Now I just have to find out how to get more airflow and still make it run silently (and not spend any money ;-) ).

Thanks for your help everyone!

This is indeed what I've been told too. Some people have their cpu (same type) running at close to 60C without problems. I'm beginning to think this is either a windows problem or a bad cpu...
Also, the computer has a bad habit of spontaneously restarting every 3-8 hours or so. I'm suspecting this is only happening when running cpdn, I'll have to investigate this further.

I have followed all the suggestions from both tests, and have run Prime95 for a few hours without errors. I will tr and let it run for a full day soon and see if it changes anything.
I've not been able to see any pattern in the cpdn crashes, most of the day the pc runs with blank screensaver and when I check it, the model has crashed.

@Andrew Hingston, how warm is your cpu when running cpdn? Perhaps overheating is indeed the problem here, since it gets about 54C when running.

I seem to constantly loose work units due to computation errors or model crashes on one of my computers, an Athlon XP 3000+. At first I thought the problem was overheating, but since everything else runs stable I'm beginning to doubt that. I've checked the ram with Memtest86.
It has been running stable for the past months, but about one month ago it started crashing on cpdn. Now I almost can't run for an hour before the model crashes.
Is this to be expected with such a complex model, or is it just my pc that is weird?

Happy new year :-)

Hi Dave, I thank you for your informative post. Does that mean that no wus have as yet been analyzed by the scientists?

I haven't had any problems upgrading BOINC to the newer version with CPDN running (I've done it several times). IF it makes trouble, delete BOINC and install the older version you were using before, then copy over the backup directory and overwrite. But then, if version 4.05 works fine for you, and you are only running CPDN, I guess there is no need to upgrade.
If you are embarrassed of your results page, take a look at mine - I have several units that will never be completed because they either didn't download correctly or they wouldn't run when downloaded. I've tried sending a mail to CPDN asking them to free it from my account, but haven't heard anything (it has been several months ago).

I'll try reading the hardware info by UK_Nick, since I am constantly trying to make my computers run faster. I've never visited the old CPDN forums before, maybe I should start now. :-)

That sure was very unlucky! Where exactly did the sound come from?
I've now started backing up the BOINC folder every week or so, at least then I won't loose months' of work.
The reason for my crash was that the cpu had overheated, it has done the same before. Problem is, back then it was at 61C, now it overheats at 55C. Brand new cpu even :-(

I hope you are right about partial results being useful too.

No, unfortunately it is from after the crash. The only backup I have from before the crash is several weeks old. I guess I can only learn from that...

I just lost a wu this morning due to the cpu being extremely unstable for no apparent reason. The wu was returned with "client error", is there any chance that it is still of any worth to them, or is it completely lost? It was at 85% when it crashed, and I've saved the wu folder. I hate the thought of several months worth of cpu cycles lost :-(

Well, I'm afraid I can't help you anymore then :-(
Have you tried checking your pc for virus or trojan horses?

Under Control Panel/System, look under Advanced, on top of that page you can set the settings for Performance, click this. Then under Advanced on this page there are two options, Processor Scheduling and Memory Usage. Check that they are both set for Programs.
I don't know if this is the problem, but it might be.

I've tried sending an email to CPDN, but that's over two weeks ago now, and I've got no reply at all, nor gotten my faulty work units deleted.

I've been running with the new cpu for a couple weeks now, and indeed there have been no problems whatsoever. Well, except it got a little too hot in the beginning, forcing me to buy a bigger cooler. But now it works perfectly :-)

That's great, then I don't have to wait a month until my current workunit finishes before I can upgrade.

Thanks for the help!

I plan to upgrade my pc in the future with an Athlon XP 3000+ cpu. The rest of the hardware will remain the same. Can I continue my current work unit in this case, or will CPDN not recognize it as the same pc?
