That\'s a great contribution, but what has made you decide to leave?
For me Boinc is just a \"set and forget\" program, when I lose interest (happens a lot) it still runs on my computer, I\'m not losing anything by that. :)

Thanks for the warning, I\'ll keep that in mind. Unfortunately today I trashed the 3 models because of a bug in BOINC under Linux (it\'s known) and had to unsuccessfully edit the cilent-state.xml by hand.... Anyway, I now have 4 new models happily running. :)

Sorry to revive an old topic, but does this warning apply to hadsm models too? I\'ve currently downloaded three of them and was wondering if it would be wise to run them simultaneously (phenom II 940 cpu) or one at a time?
I have 4GB ram and so far haven\'t had any trouble memory-wise, the OS uses only a few hundred MBs (linux).

It seems like I was a bit too fast in saying that the model was progressing normally again: now, after about 24 hours of normal crunching it is starting to act up again. It spawned 4 more hadsm3mh_um_6.0 processes and I had to stop BOINC and kill the remaining processes. If I kill one, the rest disappear too.

I\'ll let it continue hoping we can learn something more from it.

Unfortunately this isn\'t possible for me: most of my machines are just a mainboard and cou and memory, I use ssh to control them. Even on the one that has a monitor the \"show graphics\" button is greyed out after having done the xhost +local: thing in the console.
However, it seems to be running fine now.

Well, it seems to have solved itself for now; during the night it has been running and this morning only one process was running still. I\'ll keep monitoring it and report here if it happens again.

Thanks for the help anyway, Thyme.

Hello Thyme,

Not all files in projects/climateprediction.net/hadsm3mh_kk0u_005999698/dataout end with .x1.nc, there a still a few without an ending (pa26* ... pb.27* and similar).

The .xml has the following in the parts you mentioned:
PH: 2
TS: 38737
TR: 32406
and then
ST: 1
RS: 3
RSC: 0
RSDT: 38632
RSMT: 37296
RSYT: 34416

All running parallel processes are called hadsm3mh_um_6.0 and as I say, they are all sharing the cpu equally. The odd thing is, if I suspend the model one of the processes continues and has to be killed manually. When I resume the model, it starts with just one process but within some hours it begins spawning more, up to about 7 or 8.
The model is right now at 28,751%.
As you can also see by the latest trickles, the crunching has slowed down considerably in the last 2 days; this is the only project currently running on the machine, and it is on 24 hours a day and hasn\'t been used much by me.

I really don\'t want to have to kill the model and appreciate your help.
Regards,
Kenneth

I have this Hadsm model running on my Linux computer, using version 6.0 of the climate app and Boinc v5.10.45.
Lately, at about 25%, the model has started spawning several instances of the app, all sharing cpu time and memory. Right now I have 8 processes runnung, and when I try to restart Boinc they start coming back little by little. Is this normal? The model seems to have slowed down to a crawl because of this.

Until I get this solved, I\'ll leave the model suspended.

Kenneth

Welcome back to the forum, Kenneth, and congratulations!

I do envy you living in Granada though not in Summer.

Thanks to you both!
Actually, I no longer live in Granada, but in Malaga, some 1,5 hours from there. And I have to admit, eventhough I have the beach and the Mediterranean here, I still miss living in Granada!

Now back to crunching... ;-)

I did it! Finally the model finished successfully, after more than 4000 hours of crunching on an old laptop!

I just wanted to bring this post back up with the latest happenings: About a month ago the model state went to \"client detached\" for no apparent reason. It\'s still running on my computer, and is at 75% now; I intend to finish it within a month and a half.
Why does Boinc think it is detached? Is this also normal? It just passed the deadline too, but as I\'ve already read elsewhere this doesn\'t really matter.

Oh well, I should finish it soon, hopefully it doesn\'t get resent in the meantime.

Hi Mo.v,

thanks for the help, but this isn\'t really practical in my case. My two fast computers are located in my parents home some 3500 km\'s from here, so I\'d have to set up and transfer everything over ssh, which is a bit bothersome. I\'ll keep it in mind, though, as my 64bit machine should be able to complete the model relatively fast.

Sure, I don\'t mind running a hadsm model from time to time, but back when I got this model I couldn\'t choose. Anyway, I\'ll keep the long model suspended and see if I can finish it some day, though it\'ll likely be well into the future.

I recently reached 50% on a hadcm3 model, and just noticed that the server state is \'over\'. Does this mean that the model is considered successfully crunched from my side, and I don\'t have to continue to 100%? I\'m considering abandoning it if that is the case, as it\'s too big a bite for my laptop and I want to crunch for other projects. Will the other half be sent to another participant if I cancel it now?

The WU is this one.

Kenneth

I can\'t find either cc_config.xml or stdoutdae.txt anywhere on my system, so I guess I\'ll just have to continue as I have been for the time being.

Hi, I saw Shauhulud´s request for help at our team site.
To search for the mentioned files, the following command should help you:
find / -iname \'cc_config.xml\' -or -iname \'stdoutdae.txt\'

This will search for the file from the root drive and up, meaning all libraries.

If you already have performed a full search, I probably can\'t help you :-(

Kenneth, yes, it\'s great news, offers a little for everyone.

Sorry to hear you\'re leaving for a while but glad to hear you\'ll be back. Like they say, a change is as good as a rest, no shame at all. Put your \'puters to work where they work best. With so many projects these days it\'s not hard to find one that\'s just right for you.

In the meantime, there are lots of folks who find CPDN is perfect for them and more new people join everyday. Not all of them stay but some do. I know I\'ll be here for a while so don\'t you worry about taking a break. We\'ll get through these long models one way or another.

Dagorath,
I thank you for your kind words but wonder why my actions don\'t make me a \"kook and whiner\" too - I\'m completely in agreement with sTrey that this project needs shorter work units to keep me and other crunchers here. Why the difference? If only you would act as civilly to everyone here, as you do to me...

And with that said, I think we should just let this thread rest in peace.

And soon we\'ll be doing a 64-bit latest-and-greatest-state-of-the-art HadGAM1 model from the MetOffice (that should be out in a year or so).

I promised not to reply any more to this thread, but this is simply too good news to leave ignored!!!

While I had decided to quit this project because of the large work units, I\'ll just make it a pause instead until the above is ready :-)

Dagorath, PLEASE, for the sake of the project and your fellow crunchers, STOP this stupidity. This thread has already been heavily moderated, do you want it to get locked too?

And this will be my last post in this thread, I actually hope it will get deleted completely...

While I did write this on the other thread, I\'ll repeat it here in case it got deleted:
I understand perfectly well that the developers can\'t overlook two forums at once, but please write so on the forum selecting page, to avoid misunderstandings :-)

I\'m really sorry to see what this project has come to. Threads like this are very likely to scare away more crunchers, as it doesn\'t seem like the people behind the project are really listening.
Why is it that the developers have to be contacted by PM, and don\'t visit this forum? Isn\'t this forum on the project\'s own website?
A lot of useful and constructive thoughts have been provided here, but seem to be ridiculed or at best ignored.

I know this thread has become very much off-topic, but I feel this has to be debated nonetheless. Move it to another thread if appropriate, but don\'t lock or delete it, as it will give the impression that you don\'t care.
