1) Questions and Answers : Windows : 500 odd hours down the tube... (Message 4983)

I guess that this, if anything, is the downside of CPDN. If a SETI/LHC WU vanishes you only lose a few minutes - few hours worth of work....but with CPDN a whole months worth of work is lost if ANYTHING goes wrong.

I also did noticed that the hadsm programs being used before the crash were 4.03, and now when I reattached I received 4.04.

Heya Carl,

Tried that, also tried restoring the client_state.xml from the backup copy - also tried a Windows XP "System restore" but it was futile.

The client showed that the CPU time as still being 500 hours, and the To Completion time as 80 hours, but it was like the checkpoint side of things had failed.....very strange indeed.

Meaning I lost a WU at 83%.

Can someone tell me why this happened?

Timbo,

Just make sure you download BOINC V4.09. This is compatible with Win9x. The reason the CPDN download page only shows 2k/XP was due to older versions of BOINC (4.05) causing Win9x machines to grind to a halt and then require a power reset.

Crunch away!

CPDN is VERY picky in regards to system stability. Try running a testing program to see if your machine finishes successfully. May also be an error with RAM as well, so might be worth running memtest as well.

6) Questions and Answers : Windows : Inactive result still getting credit? (Message 3558)

I have the following WU being processed at present on one of my machines:

200396 192321 7 Sep 2004 4:05:11 UTC --- Inactive Unknown New

The server state shows as Inactive.

Is this anything to worry about?

The WU is still receiving credit and is computing correctly.

Thanks,

Scott

All is not lost! I received over 5000 points in credit from the WU that crashed :) :) :)

Hello All,

I was in the process of uninstalling an expired AV program which caused a BSOD relating to a sys file, a physical dump took place.

I managed to get around this issue with the AV uninstall, however upon rebooting the machine, both SETI and CPDN reset their projects automatically.

Upon navigating to the project folders, both still had their WUs in there and required exe files as well.

I am perplexed as to why removing an antivirus program and then rebooting would cause BOINC to reset both projects.

Needless to say I lost an absolute truckload of completed work, however that is not the main issue. The issue is that they reset automatically.

I know there is no way to recover the work.

Anyone have any ideas why this would\'ve happened?

Thanks,

Scott

> > Hello All,

>
>
> Final upload of completed WUs (under classic) were about 4.5MB in 3phase model
> (a little more with THC experiment). BOINC should be pretty much the same.

Good thing I have a nice fast Broadband connection :) (Uploads at around 20k/sec and downloads at approx 650 - 800k/sec)

> All WUs are the same size. In my experience the time to completion for a newly
> downloaded job is always way too low, but adjusts fairly rapidly when it
> starts.
>
> Given that both your registered computers are single processor systems I'd
> guess that Keep enough work might be set a bit too high in your
> preferences.

My keep enough work prefs are set to 14 days (In allignment with SETIs 14 day report deadline)

Thanks for the info however!

My machine just downloaded 2 extra WUs, and the \"To Completion\" time on both is only 275 hours.

Wus are named:

1sl4000104560_0
1sl5000104561_1

My current WU name begins with 238, with a \"To completion\" time of 450 odd hours.

Are these different Wus? Or just me being new to CPDN?

> > have you updated after you changed your preferences?
> >
> >
>
> YES! I upped the MaxCPU to 8, as well, and updated again.
>
> Still only have 2 WU
>
>

What OS are you running? And how much memory does your PC have? Might be worth mucking around with virtual memory options as well..

Found under general preferences.

A good test would be to attach to another project such as S@H and see if all "four" processors are utilised.

Hello All,

As the subject states, I am wondering how large the uploads are with CPDN via BOINC.

S@H varied from 2k - 30k
P@H varied from 3k to 300k

I believe trickles are around 100 bytes, but how large are completed WUs?

Thanks,

Scott

How often do machines on average trickle? From viewing other peoples results it seems to vary from every 2-4 days. Is this accurate?

TOTAL noob when it comes to CPDN, and am wondering how do you zoom in on a particular area when viewing the screensaver?

Thanks *hangs head in shame for such a noob query*
