Apologies Les, I'd failed to check the other computer, which was indeed running one of the models marked for abortion.

Thanks Les, I'd seen that post, but took no action because my model began with a 8 rather than a 7. It's the only one I have running at the moment - perhaps the other two have aborted spontaneously?? Having said that, the model I am running has been exhibiting unrealistically high Arctic temperatures; an indication of something amiss?

If and when the red marker is working again, how would I 'monitor' the geographically corresponding results?

"User defined region
If you like, you can select a model grid cell (Latitude/Longitude) to monitor during your experiment."

The area below this appears blank on my project page. How does it work? Does it? I'd love to be able to query my model or an ensemble average at a given place over time.

The graphs on results.cpdn.org don't seem to be working. I've been quite fond of these because they're the only way of (relatively easily) seeing what's going on in particular regions, as opposed to globally. Is this a known issue, and is there any chance they will be restored?
5) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Screensaver ignoring 'grid box' preference (Message 40119)

The screensaver always shows smeared/smoothed parameter graphics with the FAMOUS models, irrespective of having 'grid box' set in my account preferences. Is there any way of setting this preference locally (as with 'Show graphics') so that it applies to the screensaver?

Thanks very much for both these links, Iain and Mike. Particularly interesting was that one of the RealClimate discussion correspondents asked an almost identical question to mine: \"Do climate scientists expect any surprises as resolution increases? Were there “surprises” between the 1980s GISS models and the latest models? I note that in our region (Australia) your minimum scale map leaves out Bass Strait (between Australia and Tasmania) and Torres Strait (between Australia and PNG). These are significant water ways for local\" (indeed, I would say global) \"climate and ocean currents. They are also about 150 km wide - close to 200 km - so why would they be omitted?\"

to which the response was \"One Japanese model does have a very high spatial resolution, but I don’t think there are any particular surprises.\"

So it would appear that the answer to my original question (which was not so much about replicating Tasmanian climate in a GCM, rather whether the effective omission of Tasmania would significantly affect the GCM outcome) is \'no\'. However, I\'d still like to see some more detailed investigation of this issue (essentially an elaboration of the response above), which I don\'t think the SAP model really addresses.

I\'ve always been a bit chagrined that the land mass on which I currently reside, Tasmania, happens to fall across three different cells in the global model, and consequently isn\'t represented in any of them (I think it covers about 45% of one of them). There may be more than merely parochial interest in this, as recent work (http://www.csiro.au/news/OceanSupergyre.html) indicates that this area may be critical in controlling ocean circulation and therefore heat transport. In this sort of situation, is it possible that the imprecision introduced in approximating the geography could influence the global climate significantly? Would it not be worth a sub-suite of runs in which one of the Tasmanian-vicinity cells (the 45%-covered one) is flipped from \'ocean\' to \'land\', to find out?

What is on the next line; the result of attempting to access the reference site? (Which I THINK is Google.)

Exactly the same again - (Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site)
so presumably it can\'t get to Google either.

Have you tried the url without the \"/\" after \"net\"?

Yep, all variations with and without \'http://\' etc., without success.

I guess we\'re just left with the firewall. Thanks anyway Les.

Just got a new PC at work, and tried to install BOINC 5.4.9, but can\'t connect to http://climateprediction.net/. Error given as
\'Project not found
The URL you supplied is not that of a BOINC-based project. Please check the URL and try again.\'

Is this a manifestation of the dreaded firewall? If so, any chance the error message could be modified to indicate same?

Were you doing anything \"high priority\" at the time, or perhaps an antivirus, disk check, defrag program running at the same time? Any graphics drivers updated lately?

I\'m embarrassed to say this, but there could well have been a clash with...Microsoft Train Simulator!!

It shows up as a -161 error on the website, but as you know that\'s fairly meaningless. Is there anything in the \'solving crashes\' sticky at the top of this forum which seems likely?

Of all the dozens of \'inexplicable crash\' threads on this forum, this one seems as good as any to set forth my particular circumstances. My sulphur model crashed at 80 F***ING PERCENT COMPLETE, i.e. around the end of phase 4/beginning of phase 5. A mere 10 weeks or so continuous CPU time. Pertinent messages follow:

21/04/2006 5:02:19 PM|climateprediction.net|Computation for result sulphur_iluw_100868136_0 finished
21/04/2006 5:02:19 PM|climateprediction.net|Restarting result sulphur_hjyu_100819030_0 using sulphur_cycle version 422
21/04/2006 5:02:20 PM|climateprediction.net|Unrecoverable error for result sulphur_iluw_100868136_0 (<file_xfer_error> <file_name>sulphur_iluw_100868136_0_4.zip</file_name> <error_code>-161</error_code> <error_message></error_message></file_xfer_error><file_xfer_error> <file_name>sulphur_iluw_100868136_0_5.zip</file_name> <error_code>-161</error_code> <error_message></error_message></file_xfer_error>)

I\'ve pored over the \'solving crashes\' sticky, but none of the proffered causes seems particularly likely. I\'ve even had a look at the \'yabsvd.out\' thingy, but it just stops in the middle of a line. I don\'t know what that might be telling me.

One possible clue: I asked my account password to be resent, only get a message that I am an inactive user! Which raises a second question - how do I get reactivated?

Since the 9th January, my BOINC conection has been running correctly with the new application. Imediately prior to that I was getting error 500. It must have been a server problem as I didn\'t change anything else at my end.

So, am I to understand that upgrade/reinstallation of BOINC will fix the \'attempting to communicate with [uploader1.ox.ac.uk] timed out\' problem?

As you\'ve probably guessed, I\'m experiencing exactly the same issues as Andrew. Ordinary trickles seem to get through OK, it\'s just the phase 1 sulphur cycle upload that it\'s baulking at. I\'m pretty sure the problem is at my end, but I\'ve tried tweaking firewall and antivirus software settings, to no effect as yet. Any clues appreciated.
