1) Questions and Answers : Windows : "Calculation failure" after whenever i reboot the PC (Message 70536)
Posted 23 Feb 2024 by Curtis
Post:
I finally got to complete 4 projects! Every time prior my computer sleeps or has to be restarted, and as a result always ends up with the model failing because it was never able to restore from a previous backup properly.

This time I was able to run 4 models at the same time (probably could have done 7 or 8) without problem and they ran for 4 days straight running my intel i9-13900HX at the high 4GHs range. Not sure if this is new to more recent work units, But, 4 day work units I can do regularly. Windows just has so many issues, but it would be great to have more people who can run work units correctly without having to resort to backing up and restoring it from a previous state.

I wouldn't get windows 8 unless you need the app support and touch support. It has only annoyed me. If you like installing a second operating systems such as linux you will have a few problems. They lock down the boot sequence to licensed operating systems only. Unless you unlock it, but if you unlock that it messes with other things.
The search function is messy if you are looking for multiple files, and the start menu is gone as they are pushing you to use the start screen.
It isnt as handy as they claim.
But yes Boinc and CP are compatible with win 8.

ok well anyway i remembered that last time i had a failure someone told me to open the yabsd.out file
this is what it contained

ERROR OPENING FILE ON UNIT 0
FILENAME =
dataout/yabsd.error

IOSTAT = 30

meaning?

Post:
The entire BOINC folder (plus sub-folders), needs to be copied and saved when BOINC is not running.

To restore, just overwrite the original with the copy.
Then re-boot to remove anything still in memory from the original.

However, the graphs from phase 2 are on your model\'s data page, so a restore would only be necessary if it crashed after the start of phase 3.

Would there be any files specifically that would be needed from the BOINC folder? I am running several different models and i still have several of the older CPDN files on my hd in that folder. Im only starting to worry about how much memory this would take. But considering that CPDN takes the most memory by far I suppose that copying everything wouldnt be unreasonable.
And should I remove the other CPDN files considering they experienced client errors?

I suppose that I dont have enough that was saved to properly restore the current model. But considering that it got much much farther than the others I will be keeping these files for a while.
Oh and I forgot to mention that it did fail after the start of phase 3 I cant remember how far in i wansnt at the computer when it failed. But it did report that it couldnt roll back any farther or something like that. I dont have the messeges recorded (im thinking about installing that option).

Thanks

First off I dont know if I need to restore or if it was a standard finish due to impossible results.
I recently finished the second of 5 phases and I have several copies of the all the files from before the shift to the third phase. It also looks like I have several zip files stored in the www.climateprediction.net folder under projects. I had previously copied the single folder for my model sulphur_hlkt_100821117 and copied it to a second location on my hard drive. I want to know what I need to do now. How should I restore the files if need to do so.

My question is did Climate prediction receive my zip file?
How can I find out?
I copied some of the message info to this thread figureing it would help someone understand my situation. I put * where I thought it would be most important. I did copy the sulphur_hlkt_100821117_0 folder at 39% so I think I have it backed up just in case i need to redo the part inorder for it to do the upload.

All I need to know is did Climate prediction get the zip file or not?

i have a question. I havent been keeping too close of a track on how much time i am crunching but I have a feeling that its crunching faster than it did in the beginning. I am wondering if it is possible that crunching rate would change as the percent complete increases?
If so can anyone tell me why this is or could this be related to failing work units?

I think this might be happening but i dont have actual data to calculate the rate difference.
Just wanted input
Thanks

ahh ok cause it just did that today to me
it was at 9.02% then it jumped back to 9.00% when it had a problem late yesturday. The bionic client said 0% progress after the benchmarks failed
cool thanks

I am wondering if there is any way to verify the data before the phase is up. I dont know what happens but maybe every 5% it should try to verify the data, and make sure that the program didnt run into some sort of error. This is my input on the matter.

And also uses up a huge amount of disk space. Something like half a terabyte if you record the whole model? (figure may be wrong, its just a vague memory).

I still say it\'s fun to look at and see how things change in the model. Another thing that could be implimented is a text file that allows you to decide how often you want to record the data. I just deleted 4 out of every 5 files from the thousands of files I had it record. It still shows me what I am curious about. But I\'m still curious what causes the problem I outlined earlier.

The crashing definatly has to do with your computer. I think my last model crashed once but it had to have been a fluke, I have used so many different aplications at the same time as the model and not had a crash, that I dont know when to expect one.

Therefore if I am going to do a back up, it will probably be once a month, but my question is what needs to be backed up if I am to back up the data? And how should I back up the information? Should i just copy the files to a different location on my c drive?

If your system is unstable with high cpu usage then good luck. I wouldn\'t do graphics intensive game while I modeled. That and make sure your computer can breathe.

What does a crash look like for those of you who are having crashes?

actually now that belgix has put up his post i see that i could try to back up the model when it gets close to phase 2. what would be a recomended way to back up CPDN?
Thanks everyone!

wow.. this many problems? hmmm sounds like both Climateprediction.net and Bionic have a lot of work ahead for them. Is it important that people keep having these errors and sending in results or would it be better for climateprediction to halt the 4.22s and have people work on a more stable work unit? I would like these results to help out as much as possible as im sure everyone else doing this is hoping. So what should we do? CPDN any comments on this?
Thanks
Oh there is no way that im going to make back ups on a daily basis or even a weekly basis, so somethings going to have to change.

The playback uses whatever files have been stored. So if you enable recording for 2 separate time preiods it will display them sequentially. Playback continues in a continuous loop until you disable it. It also uses a lot of processing power - model calculations drop to a virtual standstill.

The recording is made in the files Projects/climateprediction.net/{result_name}/tmp/{result_name}_{timestep}.cpdn and they eat up disk space very quickly!

I only have one model so I dont see how it could display 2 seperate time periods. I have noticed that it does take a lot of disk space and for right now thats fine. I know that the researchers would prefer me to just sit here and let my computer compute but I probably wouldnt be interested in doing this unless i got to see something interesting. Thats one reason why i dislike the LHC Project. I am going to try deleting some of those files to see if i get that problem again. I have only one idea as to why it might be doing that so im going to test it.
Ill be back if I still dont understand it.

I like looking at the model it spits out on display. I have seen that it has tons of options. One of these options allows you to record the visuals. one problem im running into is that when i have it record it records aparently fine but then when i play back i see random non sequential time progression. so i see a few time steps that look continuous (expected) but then i see one thats totally different then it jumps back. I LOVE THESE features that let me see and interact with the model so much. it is much more fun to do a model that you can interact with and see its progress.
If you know any possible causes i would like to know whats happening. but if your too busy dont bother working on this. its a minor deal.
Thanks

if you have the opportunity to press W before the graphics cause it to crash the screen saver has 2D information plots aswell. but i have run into a problem with them. well sort of... ill post that minor bug in a different section. it has a whole load of different viewing options. just press H if you can get to that section. Dont wait till the screen saver to come up. tell bionic to show graphics and then press w to get it to 2d mode then you might be able to look at the other options by pressing H.
then if your able to work in that just avoid pressing w again to keep it in 2d mode but you might be able to play with many other things from temp data to percipitation and pressure data. Its quite cool.
Good luck

just to recap and understand from what you know of the situation. I just ran into a problem with that model and it would be fine to start a new one and that wouldnt likely have the same problems?

i know that you cannot guarantee but i see that you definatly know what your talking about so thanks for your input.
