1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Cant get any WUs (Message 64216)
Posted 25 Jul 2021 by Tut
Post:
One of my computers, Id:943816, has not gotten any WAH tasks assigned since 2018. It seems to have had a persistent problem at that time which caused every work unit to error out. Since then I have totally rebuilt the machine, but there have been no attempts to send it any more work units. Is there a sort of black list that locks a machine from being assigned work units? If so, how can I check the status of my machine and perhaps get it reinstated.

I understand that Windows work comes in bursts, and if you're not one of the fortunate few you don't get any tasks. I'd just like to make sure that there's not something else standing in the way of this machine getting a WAH task and processing it correctly..
2) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Incorrect Disk Space Available to BOINC (Message 64036)

Some things BOINC only looks at during client startup. If OpenCL drivers are added a client restart is needed for the client to see the drivers. Was the client restarted after the VM disk size change?

Yes, I even re-booted the entire PC.

I never found an answer to my original question, but I did find a more draconian solution to the problem. After playing around with the VBox Media Manager while trying to convert dynamic virtual disk to fixed virtual disk, I managed to break my Ubuntu installation. I removed the VM and its files and started over giving a new VM 20 GB of virtual disk. Going forward with a new Ubuntu install and a new BOINC install fixed everything. I am now crunching in VBox under Windows 10.

I used the VirtualBox Virtual Media Manager to increase the initial 10GB limit to 20GB. VirtualBox recognizes that the limit is now 20GB. Neither Ubuntu or BOINC sees the change.

I am a Linux noob. I have installed BOINC in Virtual Box on a Windows machine. The virtual disk space was initially set to only 10GB. Subsequently I increased it to 20GB. On this VM BOINC does not recognize the added disk space available. How can make it recognize that there is more than a few hundred MB of disk available to it?

I am a Windows user who is tired of never being able to get any tasks for CPDN, thus I decided to see if I could run Linux CPDN tasks under Windows. Since I am a total noob to Linux, I decided to try to run BOINC within a separate VBox machine to support only CPDN Linux tasks

First, I upgraded my standard Boinc version of VirtualBox to the latest (6.1.22) as recommended by VBox. My current Windows LHC@home tasks running under VBox didn't seem to mind this upgrade.

Then I followed the instructions in this link:
https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-in-virtualbox/
to install Ubuntu v.20.04 in my VBox.

Then I followed this link to install Boinc and the proper 32 bit libraries to my 64 bit system:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC#64_Bit_Considerations

I logged in to the CPDN website and set up a separate set of preferences for the VM (School) to use 100% of the cores and 100% of the CPU. The VM itself has 4GB of memory and 10GB of virtual disk space. I gave it access to only one core.

The installation seemed to work fine. The unfamiliarity and the limited visibility of tasks in the Boinc Manager under Ubuntu threw me at first. I had to use the Event Log to see what was happening. I saw two tasks download and then die almost instantly. Upon investigation of the dead tasks, I found I was still missing a library.

Had to also do: apt-get install lib32stdc++6. Seems the list of libraries in the 64bit Considerations link above needs to be updated.

After another task failed, I realized I probably needed to restart the entire VM to get the Boinc Client to also restart.

I restarted the VM and then started the Boinc Manager. I can now see that I have downloaded a HadAM4 at N216 task and am chugging away on it with one of my cores. Should be done in about 3 months if all goes well.

I am now playing with VBox to learn how to run this new VM as headless. Seems to be pretty straightforward.

I have noticed that there seems to be some coordination between Boinc in VBox and Boinc under windows. This PC is an i5-9600K with 6 cores and 32GB of memory. Windows Boinc preferences are to use 92% of the cores and 96% of the cpu. Neither installation seems to be stepping on the other. The VM seems to have priority for its core, and Windows Boinc gets the rest. My use of the PC does not suffer from this as I do not let BOINC have the GPU when I am using the system.

Would it be possible to create a Linux test app that would merely verify (or not) the correct libraries on each downloading machine? It would then "somehow" notify that user that his client was (or not) configured correctly to process Linux tasks, and, if not, provide him with a link to explicit directions to remedy the situation. Part of the challenge would be to send it to every Linux box once and only once. This might also apply to Virtual Box installs. I frankly do not know enough about that except to wonder.

One of my systems (Home) does not get CPDN tasks. The other (Work) does. The one with no new work hasn't gotten work since 2018 in Windows 7 days. The system has been rebuilt with an updated CPU and memory - lots of capacity. Now running Win10 with BOINC/Virtualbox.
I'm trying to figure out why it only looks for tasks once a day and never gets any. It's share is set to 200. The rest of the projects are 100 or less. When I look at the CPDN project properties I find that the "scheduling priority" is -0.00. Can someone explain what this mean?
Also, any help in getting a fair share of new work would be appreciated.

I expect that they have not been able to receive any files from any of us. Of course I cannot be really sure of that ..

One of my Windows machines hasn't received any work for over a year. The other receives new work from time to time. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this?
