61) Questions and Answers : Windows : Boinc installs but does not run (Message 4777)

There is hopefully a B in a circle on the task tray. Double click that to bring up the GUI. From there, you can go to settings - attach to project to get started.

The old one should be removed. This is the new code from the BOINC team.

How many days is your cache? And how many hours are left on the first WU? If the number of hours left on the first WU is less than the number of hours of cache, then this is completely normal and expected behavour.

64) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Ability to delete a not used workunit (Message 4666)
Posted 26 Sep 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
> > The database that maintains the state of each result requires that each
> result
> > have a host attached. So, it will not be possible to delete a host that
> is no
> > longer active. It should be possible to write code that hides the
> unwanted
> > host. But I expect that it will not happen soon.
>
> Ok, not urgent but usefull!
>
> And what about deleting WU not needed ? Those lost, those loaded but not
> exploiteanymore (Computer retired,...). It could be very usefull to allow a
> delete (or a hide if you prefer like for the computer but don't see why on
> this point) of the WU not really in action ?
>
> ---

It would be useful to have a trickle deadline (2 weeks?) that way a machine that was retired or had a HD go bad would only delay the reissue of the result by a couple of weeks instead of a year. The other way is manual, and requires the person to either send an email, or post the WU ID. Automatic is better, as someone will forget to send an email or post here.

CPDN requires 600MB free space / active WU and leaves 200MB behind zipped in case it is needed later.

66) Questions and Answers : Windows : LHC has renamed my CP project (Message 4579)

Post:
> > > It appears that maybe LHC admins are not as experienced at tweaking
> > their
> > > BOINC servers. Your best bet is probably checking out LHC's forums
> for
> > > possible solutions.
> >
> > HeHe... Don't bother. They don't know what happened, and are saying it
> looks
> > like a Core Client issue.
>
> Good to know. Funny this happens right after LHC came out with new
> applications/validator. I just reset LHC just in case until this is
> resolved.
>
The BOINC developers believe that they have found the issue, and are working on a fix.

67) Questions and Answers : Wish list : BOINC in a GUI application for Mac OS X? (Message 4506)

BOINC is developed at berkeley, not CERN. If there is a CLI version, there will be a GUI version eventually. The plan is to have every installation a CLI with the GUI controlling the CLI.

68) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Will Climate Prediction Preempt Seti Past deadline? (Message 4469)
Posted 22 Sep 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
>
> > The resource share usage is much better in 4.09, but it is still quite
> > possible to blow past a deadline (in some cases without ever having
> started
> > the WU).
>
> There is an inherent conflict between deadlines and the timeslicing approach,
> which is why some of us were saying months ago that preempting wasn't going to
> be the easy solution some were hoping.
>
> Presumably, keeping the cache small in preferences helps. And yes, I do
> understand why SETI fans like big caches. ;)
>
> It's an argument against artificially short deadlines from projects.
>
Once I understood (had explained) the ramifications of a preemptive scheduler, I was of the opinion that it was going to be rather difficult to design a good one. It would have to give 100% cpu to a WU that was in danger of being late, and then not allow that project to download more work for some time in order to allow other projects to catch up. Note that the CPU scheduler cannot wait until the deadline has passed to give all of the resources to the late WU as that is too late.

I believe that it is possible:
1) Allow debt to be negative.
2) If the estimated time to crunch a WU is ever 80% or more of the time remaining to the deadline, that WU gets 100% of the crunch time until it is less than 80% of the time remaining to the deadline. If a deadline is less than 12 hours away, that WU is to be completed immediately even if the crunch time is less than 80% of the time remaining to deadline.
2a) In the case of conflicts in 2 where there is more than one WU that meets the criteria, the WU with the shortest deadline gets the priority.
3) A project that has a negative debt will not be eligible to DL new work unless no work is available from any project with a higher debt.
4) If during downloading of work, any WU arrives where the estimated crunch time meets condition 2, do not download any more work from anywhere.
5) If a CPU is idle, download a WU from the project with the highest debt that has work available.

I have probably missed a case. Implementing this is not going to be easy.

Merging hosts is not based on the name, but on the OS and CPU. It could be important to know what OS/CPU combination crunched a particular WU (even if it crashed). If it crashed, it would be useful for debugging. If it did not crash, that host could be contacted again to attempt to crunch more on that WU. (I know this one has been retired). If the host has been retired, and a backup of the successful WUs have been made, some arrangement could be made to do the extra requested work somehow.

70) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Slower computers getting more credit on each trickle (Message 4467)
Posted 22 Sep 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
Here, there is a fixed credit per trickle returned as there is no validation.

In any case the speed of a computer should not make much difference in the amount of credit granted per WU. The way is is supposed to work is that the credit for a particular WU is the same on any machine, but the credit / time is greater for faster machines as they can push out more WUs / (pick a time unit).

> The problem isn't CPDN, it's BOINC. BOINC is what decides to preempt, not the
> project. So CPDN isn't wasting your time on other projects.
>
> Yes, it's known that the early 4.xx releases have the astonishing ability to
> blow past deadlines. As uk_nick suggested, you could try BOINC 4.09, but I
> haven't read anywhere whether this issue has been fixed or not.

> It doesn't ask. You need to attach manually.
>
> Go to the settings menu and select "attach to project". Then enter the URL and
> account number. :)
>
I was under the impression that BOINC asked if there are no projects allready attached.

> Hi, i had the same problem , after grant full acces on boinc directory it
> works. I think there is a problem of security rights with the install of boinc
>
BOINC is installed in one directory tree. Typically in the Program Files directory. Normal users cannot write into the Program Files directory, nor can they change their write access (these are security features of windows NT/2k/2003/XP operating systems.)

74) Questions and Answers : Windows : Transfering WU\'s from one PC to another.... (Message 4226)
Posted 17 Sep 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
> > In addition to Honza's answer, you'll probably have to give the new
> computer
> > the same name. If you give it a different name it's possible that the WU
> will
> > be discarded as invalid for the computer when you start BOINC.
> >
>
> Isn't it that when you move whole BOINC folder, your machine name, Account ID
> resp. attached project(s), scheduled WUs etc. are moving also (they are stored
> in .XML files)?
> NB: i should have mentioned that an installation of BOINC sw but skipping
> registration should be the procedure.
>
The network name is reported back. This can be changed, but I would only allow BOINC to see one change at a time.

> I hope 4.08 fixes the issue for others, but it did not for me :(
>
> Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help isolate this issue (
> debug code, logs, whatever ). I hate to detach, but I gotta have my comp.
>
> > There is a known issue with versions earlier than 4.08 (in alpha testing
> now).
> > It should be fixed with 4.08.

Send me as full a description in an email, and I will forward it on to the developers. I can be reached at jm7 at acm dot org. I have modified my address in the hopes of reducing the chances of a spam bot finding it.

Post:
I haven't had this problem, and while my system is not exactly the same, it is similar. The one in question is a 2.0Ghz Pentium with Outlook 2003 and has about 30Gb free. There is a bug in 4.08 and possibly earlier that uses all of the CPU time when connecting to a server. If you have a modem, this can be especially pronounced. But once every 2 hours or so seems to be much to rapid for this machine between trickles.

Since you are running multi project you should change your preferences to leave projects in memory while they are paused. The current version of BOINC does not wait until a checkpoint to switch, and all work since the last checkpoint is discarded if a project is removed from memory.
