If the computers are networked together, the simplest solution would be to install a proxy and use that.

If you had a backup of the BOINC directory, you could have restored that.

If you did not have a backup, you get a new WU and nothing you can do about it. The old WU will be reassigned after some time with no trickles.

44) Message boards : Number crunching : running CPDN when all users are logged off (Message 5959)

Post:
&gt; In Windows 2000, is is possible to have CPDN keep running even when all users
&gt; are logged off?
&gt;
&gt; Cameron
&gt;
Yes. Install as a service. Make certain to remove the BOINC_GUI.exe from startup. Make certain that it is exited. Run the command BOINC_CLI.exe -install from a DOS box. You will have to set the BOINC login user to "System" before this will work. However, you will loose the ability to see what is going on until either you upgrade to 4.5x CC (not recommended yet) or use an external viewer such as BOINCView.

Neither do we without a few more details.

What version of BOINC?

What OS and version? Is it XP with service pack 2?

What projects are you running on BOINC?

Is it one machine out of several?

46) Message boards : Number crunching : Report Deadline - what happens if work is not finished? (Message 5909)
Posted 5 Nov 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; I'm actually not sure, I think it may go through but if it's that slow, you
&gt; don't want to wait a year to find out! It's probably best to run other BOINC
&gt; projects on slower machines, CPDN is orders of magnitude more complex.
&gt;
I also have a slower machine running CPDN. The only reashon that I keep it running CPDN is to test a fix that has been promised from BOINC to respect deadlines. If this machine ever stops downloading other work, and starts running CPDN only, I will know that the bug is fixed (the current estimate is late august of 2010 for completion). ONce that happens, I will dosconnect the machine from CPDN.

On restore, restore the entire BOINC directory, install the same, or a newer version, and you should be about where you left off.

&gt; &gt; It is available from the Seti Alpha site and should be <b>downloaded at
&gt; your
&gt; &gt; own risk</b> - so if you're going to complain, please do so on Seti with
&gt; all
&gt; &gt; the other whiners.
&gt;
&gt; No. If you are going to complain, then DON'T DOWNLOAD IT! As is clear, it is
&gt; alpha so it is untested and it is quite likely that it will screw up your CPDN
&gt; model when it reaches 95% :) I really don't understand why everyone keeps
&gt; posting links to the alpha site to download it. The alpha client should stay
&gt; in alpha testing until it is ready to be deployed IMHO. I might even suggest
&gt; that berkeley put the alpha download into a section of the alpha site so that
&gt; you have to log in to the alpha project before you can download it. But that
&gt; is just me :)

Sometimes there is a valid reason for a recomendation that some users get the Alpha code to test a problem that they have been having, and this removes the usefulness of password protecting the Alpha code.

The Alpha test group is very small, and the bug reports are done by email (this email list is by invitation only). There have been a rather large number of emails describing problems with 4.50 and 4.51 over the last week. 4.51 fixed a crash that was easy to cause in 4.50, but there are still a large number of problems with 4.51 that need to be fixed before it is released from Alpha.

There is a new BOINC GUI in development that is a CLI controller. After this is finished, all installations will install the CLI and the GUI. It should be the case (I haven't seen it, so I don't know) that percentages and such are displayed in the GUI even if the CLI is installed as a service. I hope that it will be able to control multiple installations.

Set the queue length (connect every __ days) to be .1. This should limit you to a single S@H WU. If not, you can always try .05.

If there is a WU in the state ready to run, and nothing running, that s a bug with the BOINC client. There is one that is known in 4.09 and older that would do this. Try upgrading to 4.13.

53) Message boards : Number crunching : AT 94% complete, BOINC (Message 4928)
Posted 2 Oct 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; &gt; I hit 94 percent today but no new model yet. I have 26 hours left on the
&gt; work
&gt; &gt; unit. I guess since I am set to keeping .1 to 1 day's cache, then when it
&gt; gets
&gt; &gt; to 24 hours left it might download a new work unit. I am doing LHC and
&gt; SETI
&gt; &gt; also, with equal sharing. So it will be more than three days before this
&gt; work
&gt; &gt; unit finishes. I am kind of excited to be finishing a CPDN model.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt;
&gt;
&gt; In the way I interpret the cache mechanism
&gt;
&gt; you shouldn't see a download until you get to 0.8 hrs left.
&gt;
&gt; the download is triggered by reaching the min (0.1 in your case) and fills
&gt; till it reaches or surpasses the max (can't get a part workunit)
&gt;
&gt; since you are running 3 projects equally your cache refills will trigger at
&gt;
&gt; 1/3 * 0.1 days = 0.8 hours
&gt;
This math assumes equal resource shares. It should be:

Resource fraction * 0.1 days = ?

Where the resource fraction = CPDN share / (total of all resource shares).

But the estimate is correct in that it uses the low water mark for the refill rather than the high water mark.

Windows 95/98/ME do not have all of the process controls that NT/2K/XP/2003 have, and therefore it is quite possible that on these machines, there is no solution available. I have read reports of this in the S@H boards for several weeks now for earlier versions of BOINC.

You can post the WU number here, or wait for the trickle detector to give up on that host as having dropped the WU automatically (in a couple of weeks(?) with no trickle).

57) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC core client version (Message 4923)
Posted 2 Oct 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; I think a slight clarification here might be useful.
&gt;
&gt; The Predictor project is down at the moment, while they port their software to
&gt; Version 4 of BOINC. They are not issuing work units (WU's) regardless of the
&gt; client software you are running.
&gt;
&gt; It won't do any harm to keep your client attached to the Predictor project,
&gt; when Predictor does move to BOINC V.4 then your client will then automatically
&gt; pick up WU's for you for this project.
&gt;
&gt; This may not be that far away, as I know that an Alpha test of the Predictor
&gt; V4 software is due to start in the very near future. Also, Predictor is one of
&gt; the better BOINC projects for keeping us informed of bugs and updates, keep an
&gt; eye on the 'Current Progess' section of the Predictor web site for curent news
&gt; on the project.
&gt;
&gt;
Predictor is also waiting on hardware from dell (and waiting, and waiting, and ...). :( If anyone can let dell know that this particular snafu has an audience measured in the tens of thousands they might get the lead out and do something about it.

The short answer is the Seconds / Time Segment is a measure of how fast you are crunching, and lower numbers indicate higher speed. But stability is more important.
<a href="http://www.boinc.dk/index.php?page=user_statistics&amp;project=cpdn&amp;userid=13"><img border="0" height="80" src="http://13.cpdn.sig.boinc.dk?188"></a>

RAC is a measure of the speed of getting credits granted. If for some reason your returns of trickles has slowed, the RAC will drop as well.
