21) Message boards : Number crunching : First sulphur model finished (Message 16392)
Posted 2 Oct 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
did i understand correctly that the Sulfur models are a limited set? At the moment I have 2 and the only way it looks like I will complete them has been to change the resource share to 200 (50%) ... not complaining, just curious ... especially with the tight deadlines ...

If you are running 4.36 or later, remember that eventually, the host will enter EDF and NWF and finish the result just in time.
22) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Cannot update Avatar. (Message 14809)
Posted 31 Jul 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
Every time that I try to update the avatar, I get the following error message:

Warning: imagejpeg(): supplied argument is not a valid Image resource in /websites/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/user/edit_forum_preferences_action.php on line 41

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /websites/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/user/edit_forum_preferences_action.php:41) in /websites/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/user/edit_forum_preferences_action.php on line 78

The same avatar file from the same location works on all other BOINC boards. (And it is not the avatar that I currently have showing).

24) Questions and Answers : Preferences : How do I set my CP to run always? (Message 11296)
Posted 23 Mar 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; &gt; Have a look at your <a>
&gt; href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/prefs.php?subset=global"&gt;general
&gt; &gt; preferences</a> amaootta.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; If <b>Do work while computer is in use?</b> is set to <b>yes</b> and
&gt; &gt; <b>Do work only between the hours of</b> is set to <b>(no
&gt; restriction)</b>
&gt; &gt; your default preferences will ensure that CPDN will always be running
&gt; &gt; (except when you're running a higher priority application).
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; There's no need to worry about the "No separate prefs" message. All it
&gt; means
&gt; &gt; is that your computer in set to have "home" as its venue and because you
&gt; &gt; haven't set up home preferences you're falling back to your general
&gt; ones.
&gt; &gt;
&gt;
&gt; I have those settings but still taskbar icon says that Run based on
&gt; preferences instead of Run always :/
&gt; Is there any difference between them?
&gt;
&gt;
Based on preferences means look at the settings on the web page to tell. There is also an override for each host available through the file menu that says whether to run based on preferences, suspend, or run always.
25) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Changing cross-project ID (Message 11294)
Posted 23 Mar 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
Try doing a search for your user name <a href="http://www.boincstats.com/">here</a>. If you come up with one result in the BOINC project (summary or all projects you are attached to), then you have one consistent CPID across all projects that you are attached to.

I just looked. Two from the chezk republic, one from germany, and one from I believe denmark that all are Warlord with a capital W. They appear to be distinct users. Of the two from the chezk republic one is S@H only, and the other is S@H and CPDN. I can't tell which one you are...
26) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Upload of incomplete WUs (Message 11260)

I am not certain that I understand the problem.

Does the manager say ready to report? Is the upload failing?
27) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Resource Sharing (Message 11205)
Posted 21 Mar 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
You don't realy need to change the resource settings. When one project is out of work, the rest of the projects get the time that would have been spent on the project that is down.

In otherwords, it is automatic. If you are crunching S@H and CPDN, and S@H runs out of work, then CPDN will get all of the time.
28) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Limit CPU usage (Message 11204)

Post:
If the cooling system is functioning correctly, you may wish to investigate thread master. I have no experience with this and all the knowledge I have is hearsay.
29) Message boards : Number crunching : Can I delete the folder.... (Message 10505)
Posted 7 Mar 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; With an old run it that does not match the current run's name?
&gt;
Yes, but, CPDN would really rather that you archived it if you cannot keep it on your HD. Sometimes they will come back and ask for more info from a run. If you have deleted the run data, somebody has to do the work all over again.

31) Questions and Answers : Windows : Viewing progress when ran as a service (Message 9602)
Posted 20 Feb 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; From what I heard this will come, the GUI and the core will be separated,
&gt; maybe it's even in 4.62 already but that's a test version still.
&gt;
The split was in 4.50. 4.2x is a continuation of the 4.50 -&gt; 4.66 sequence. So yes it is in 4.62.
32) Questions and Answers : Windows : Error Code -5 keeps coming - Is CPDN suitable for me? (Message 9600)
Posted 20 Feb 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
I get this quite frequently, but only after I shut down BOINC, restart BOINC, and then wait for CPDN to start. It doesn't sem to matter how long I wait for CPDN to completely shut down. I suspect that there is a problem in the checkpoint code.
33) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Access schedule - only on week ends (Message 8885)

35) Questions and Answers : Windows : What takes priority? Switch-time or resource share? (Message 8882)
Posted 8 Feb 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
&gt; At this moment resource shares are at 50-50 between the two, I have updated
&gt; both Seti &amp; CPDN so they should 'know'.
&gt;
&gt; CPDN is to pre-empt after 120 minutes. Seti is to pre-empt after 360 minutes.
&gt;
&gt; I just played NFS Underground 2 for the past couple of hours, so that
&gt; disrupted my test as I disable BOINC when playing games, but I'll let it run
&gt; through for the next couple of hours. If CPDN doesn't pre-empt within an hour
&gt; and a half, something's broke.
&gt;
&gt; All I did prior to getting this 'problem' was change the BOINC partition from
&gt; FAT32 to NTFS. I'll keep an eye on it.
&gt;
The pre-empt time is a General Setting. You only get one of these per host. You cannot set S@H to be 360 minutes and CPDN to be 120 minutes.

BOINC checks to see which project should be run at three different times that I know of: when a result is completed, when a WU is downloaded, and the preempt time after the last event that caused an evaluation of which project to run.

&gt; If you had one BOINC project running before you added the second
&gt; the BOINC will run the new addition extensively until the times reach the
&gt; set percentages.
&gt;
&gt; I had SETI 2 running for a long time in Beta.
&gt; Added CP and CP ran and ran and ran until
&gt; Boinc was happy it had had its share of time.

The scheduler has changed completely in 4.x. It now switches between projects on a settable schedule, and does not do any long term scheduling.
37) Questions and Answers : Windows : Seti@home and BOINC conflict (Message 8880)
Posted 8 Feb 2005 by John McLeod VII

Switch from S@H classic to S@H BOINC, and your problem will go away. You may have to wait for a day or two for this to happen. When doing this, make certain that you ACTIVATE your account instead of creating a new one.
38) Questions and Answers : Windows : % work done shows 0%, CPU time counter not advancing (Message 8879)

39) Questions and Answers : Windows : hadsm3_4.03_win runon problem (Message 7436)
Posted 21 Jan 2005 by John McLeod VII
Post:
I am running BOINC 4.59 and I have noticed on one of my machines that hadsm3_4.03_win is running and taking up half of the CPU time. A S@H WU is tagged asrunning at the moment, and the CPDN code should not be running at all.

Yes, I am an Alpha tester.
40) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC not running (Message 6144)
Posted 16 Nov 2004 by John McLeod VII
Post:
The failure to start usually seems to mean that there is another instance of BOINC (either CLI or GUI) already running.
