1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Have a host record deleted/cleared? (Message 30477)

Hi

I was interested in the AMD Pentium so I did look. I\'m sorry to disappoint, but it can\'t be deleted from your record on the server. The software won\'t allow members to request deletion or merging of computers. If the software can\'t do it when you click the Merge this computer button, nobody\'s able to. And the server refuses to forget old computers.

If you look at my computers you\'d think I have three. But I\'ve only ever had two. Two apparently identical descriptions refuse to merge.

Not allowing anyone to fiddle around with the database is a security precaution.

There are far worse problems for the database and the server disks. In the Number Crunching section of the forum, have a look at the thread started by Conan.......

Edit - I\'ve just seen you\'ve said that some projects allow deletion of old computers now.

The only project I\'ve noticed it on was Malaria Control. If you go down through your account to the computers and then click on the detailed information for that host the merge link is there, as well as a delete this host link next to it. It\'s not present on all hosts, and I don\'t know why (it\'s not activity based, some of my active hosts have the delete link and some inactive ones do not). I don\'t know if it\'s something in a newer version of the BOINC server software, or an option that administrators can enable or disable, or what. Just thought that since I\'ve got a host here I\'d like to delete, I\'d ask if anyone knew if that was something only some projects are doing, if it\'s in newer server code, or what.

You\'re right not to be encouraged, because it seems a pretty intractable problem. The record will just stay there. On the project Web site the host does eventually disappear from the \'Only hosts active in past 30 days\' view - and that\'s about as good as it gets.

I suspect the project is right to be conservative on this: if they allowed dissimilar machines to be merged, there would probably be a lot more complaints from people who had accidentally merged machines and lost their history.

Yeah, it\'s long since gone from the 30 day list since it was last active in 2004. ;-) I have no desire to merge it, it\'s got no credits just a bunch of errored work units (shocking that a machine thinking it\'s an XP 3000+ Pentium errors work units huh?), that\'s why I\'d rather it was just deleted. I notice that some other projects have started to give the ability to delete host records, I wonder if that\'s in the newer code or something they did special. If it\'s just newer server side code it\'s just a matter of time until I can fix this on my own.

Not a Windows issue, but I\'m not sure where else to post it. CPDN has a bogus host entry for me that I\'d like to just have deleted if at all possible. Some client glitch caused it, and the nature of the glitch prevents me from merging it. It\'s a record that serves no purpose, so CPDN even benefits by deleting it, optimize the database and all that. ;-)

The nature of the glitch should be obvious, but here it is if you don\'t want to look:

CPU type AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ Pentium

Didn\'t know AMD was in the Pentium business. :-D

I searched and didn\'t find anything encouraging for me to think this will actually be done, but I thought I\'d ask anyways.

I\'m not sure whether it\'ll work or not (never tried it myself)

I tried, but i didn\'t work. :(

Yeah, changing even your username won\'t break a project that\'s connected. I do it all the time because BoincView has a problem with spaces in names for projects that require the name to connect. Every time I add a machine to WCG via BoincView I have to first change my user name at the project to remove spaces, then attach, then change user name again to add spaces. Doesn\'t bug the client at all when that info changes.
