Posted 5 Jan 2023 by TR UNESCO Global Geopark Post: LOVE Noctua coolers. 5700x is a very underrated chip.. overclocks like a boss if you decide to go the other way and run it hot :) ITX seems entirely appropriate for chips under 100w.. I love/hate em for assembly. Seems like mATX is getting less common though. |

Posted 13 Jun 2022 by TR UNESCO Global Geopark Post: With the latest batch of work units we've been able to give the 5800x3d a workout. Was hoping the huge L3 Cache would make a big difference but performance is similar to other Ryzens. With same ram and same # of workunits running concurrently the 5800x3d is outperforming a 3900x by 15%. I think a lot of that can be attributed to the 5th generation improvements as much as to the cache. The chip is very efficient but I suspect the 5700x or 5900x are better bang for buck (quite the premium for the x3d). Anyways thought everyone ought to know :) |

I've installed these.. we'll see if the scheduler likes me now :) Edit: I have work to do now. Formatted my ubuntu (19.04) install as the library install was fighting back. I like mint better anyway! |

Posted 8 Apr 2019 by TR UNESCO Global Geopark Post: Geophi raises a very good point. After reviewing data I'm sad to report my Ryzen SMT tests were all done on large PNW25 models. I hope I can evaluate some smaller models soon. I hope to test the 3rd gen Ryzen when it releases - the 2nd gen seem like a strong evolution and the 3rd's die shrink should provide good efficiency. |

Posted 4 Apr 2019 by TR UNESCO Global Geopark Post: This is certainly true on an 8core 16thread Ryzen - I've tested it with many configurations and the very best is to run only 8 tasks and get the DDR4 memory clock as high as possible (performance scaled linearly up with memory clocks) CPU clock speed had less effect. I also leave SMT on but found no significant difference with it off. After about a month of testing I calculated that running 8 tasks instead of 16 on my 1st gen Ryzen resulted in about 6% more productivity overall. The hyperthreaded intel (ivy bridge) systems I run did better at running all threads (8) - effectively they did the same amount of work either way. |

I've now done a little experimenting with cpu clocks and memory clocks on my Ryzen 1700x Work done scaled linearly at 1:1 as memory clocks went up. CPU clocks saw some gains but nothing like the memory clocks. I've got mine running at 2933mhz w/mediocre timings and I'm currently the #5 host. 3 of the top 10 hosts are Ryzen 7 1st gens... CPDN certainly works great on Ryzen. I'd love to see what a 2nd gen Ryzen w/really fast RAM could produce. |

I've got a Haswell on win10 as well.. does more per core but it's also at 4.2ghz Be a while before I report on my next round of Ryzen tests. Anyone else tested the impact of DDR4 speed or SMT? |

Posted 15 Aug 2018 by TR UNESCO Global Geopark Post: Haven't seen much discussion on project configuration on Ryzen. Did a little benchmarking recently. Stock speed 1700x (8 core 16 thread) DDR4 running at 2133 dual channel and SMT on. Running 16 workunits produces ~67% of the work that running 8 does. I suspect running 16 properly is handicapped by memory bandwidth. I'll do some more testing with SMT off as well as Ram running at a more modern speed |
