And It's very stupid indeed. And the wrong way round - why protect root users instead of "normal" ones? It's the normal ones that will screw up.Normal users don't need it because they cannot access other user's folders. |

I think the final straw was the command line not seeing a program in the current directory without me prefixing with ./ I class that as exceedingly unintuitive bad programming and won't be using it again../ is only needed when you're logged in as root. It isn't bad programming. It is a protection against users who put an executable with the same name as a system command into their folders. If there are no other users you can change the search path. |

Unless they have police and army on the streets stopping you exiting your home (like the Netherlands and China), it's not a lockdown. All we have is advice which I ignore entirely. There's no one here stopping us from exiting our home. It's still entirely allowed. |

It's a matter of statistics. There's simply more chance that you encounter a machine running many tasks concurrently, so it doesn't need to be the cause. |
6) Message boards : Number crunching : Trickle up files
Message 61217 Posted 11 Oct 2019 by Alex Plantema |
You can see all trickles by replacing result.php by trickle.php in the link to the result page. |
7) Questions and Answers : Getting started : forum sorting does'nt work
Message 60963 Posted 20 Sep 2019 by Alex Plantema |
In the forum preferences you can choose not to display locked posts at the top. |
8) Message boards : Number crunching : Preferences - project options missing
Message 60954 Posted 19 Sep 2019 by Alex Plantema |
That list isn't useful for the latest tasks. And Windows 10 isn't even mentioned. |
9) Message boards : Number crunching : User Forum - missing options.
Message 60852 Posted 23 Aug 2019 by Alex Plantema |
There's no visible difference anymore between visited and unvisited links because the colours are manipulated. Same problem again. |

11) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC Client Improvements
Message 60635 Posted 11 Jul 2019 by Alex Plantema |
I would wish the client to show cpu time like version 5 and earlier instead of running time. Then we can see which task hangs. |
12) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Benchmarks and other problems
Message 60396 Posted 21 Jun 2019 by Alex Plantema |
Xeons are faster than other processors with the same clock frequency, and 16 GB should be more than enough. The project is supposed to run on home computers. |
13) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : Op Ed Piece in the NY Times Regarding Climate Model Computing
Message 60312 Posted 14 Jun 2019 by Alex Plantema |
I see that some of the cheaper MB/CPU bundles have motherboards that only take up to 32GB ram. Seems a bit mad when the pairing includes an 8core cpu. Each task uses at most 600 MB of ram currently. |
14) Message boards : Number crunching : See which publications your crunching has contributed to.
Message 59966 Posted 11 Apr 2019 by Alex Plantema |
The links under the batch numbers lead to pages with a link called Restricted access to batch CPU analysis, leading to a page asking to log in using an unsafe connection. The links to the first and third publications on the CPDN Publications page are invalid. |

18) Message boards : Number crunching : New work Discussion
Message 58646 Posted 26 Aug 2018 by Alex Plantema |
Now you posted it in this thread. That isn't where people are looking for it when they need it. That's why I suggested to use a central place for it like the batch list. |
19) Message boards : Number crunching : New work Discussion
Message 58642 Posted 25 Aug 2018 by Alex Plantema |
Some information in the batch list about problems with a batch would be useful, e.g. what to do with it or a link to a message about it. |
20) Message boards : Number crunching : Nearly there
Message 58320 Posted 2 Jul 2018 by Alex Plantema |
I wouldn't recommend anything less than Raid 6, because by the time one drive fails, another drive may have errors too, and without redundancy you cannot rebuild the set. |
