Finished with climateprediction.net
(Message 22927)
Posted 26 May 2006 by John Perko Post: My machine just finished 3 weeks of work on a unit with the following messages: 05/24/06 10:53:18 PM||request_reschedule_cpus: process exited 05/24/06 10:53:18 PM|climateprediction.net|Computation for result sulphur_ib7i_100854334_0 finished 05/24/06 10:53:21 PM|rosetta@home|Starting result t285_HOMOLOG_ABRELAX_hom001__518_23375_0 using rosetta version 516 05/24/06 10:53:21 PM|climateprediction.net|Unrecoverable error for result sulphur_ib7i_100854334_0 (<file_xfer_error> <file_name>sulphur_ib7i_100854334_0_5.zip</file_name> <error_code>-161</error_code> <error_message></error_message></file_xfer_error>) 05/24/06 10:54:26 PM|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi 05/24/06 10:54:26 PM|climateprediction.net|Reason: To fetch work 05/24/06 10:54:26 PM|climateprediction.net|Requesting 172800 seconds of new work, and reporting 1 results 05/24/06 10:54:32 PM|climateprediction.net|Scheduler request to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded 05/24/06 10:54:34 PM|climateprediction.net|Started download of hadcm3lbm_aj2m_05260545.zip 05/24/06 10:54:34 PM|climateprediction.net|Started download of SULPC_OXIDANTS_19_A2_1990.mod.gz 05/24/06 10:54:36 PM|climateprediction.net|Finished download of hadcm3lbm_aj2m_05260545.zip That\'s it. No attempt to transfer again; it just downloaded another unit and started running again. Thousands of cpu-hours blown. I don\'t give damn about the credit, I\'m trying do some science. I reiterate what I said before on the Rosetta forum. It is not my responsibility to make these models run. The people who write them are responsible for fixing them. What a waste. I am now permanently disconnecting from climateprediction and giving all my resources to Rosetta. I don\'t feel the effort is worth it. There\'s plenty of good climate research out there already. |

BOINC asking for internet connection when it has one already
(Message 21621)
Posted 26 Mar 2006 by John Perko Post: My BOINC 5.2.13 periodically shoots up a balloon from the system tray with a Network Status message asking for a connection to the internet, when I already have a continuous connection, and BOINC uses it without interruption. Does anyone know how to stop this message. Thanks. |

Notifying the project of a crashed model?
(Message 17067)
Posted 8 Nov 2005 by John Perko Post: Thanks. How does the server know it has failed? Does it flag it as one to be re-issued after a certain interval in which there is no communication from the client about that particular WU? |

Notifying the project of a crashed model?
(Message 17064)
Posted 8 Nov 2005 by John Perko Post: The CP project, in its license agreement, asks to be notified when a WU crashes, so they can assign it to someone else, but they don\'t say who to notify. I got a FORTRAN end-of-file read error using BOINC 5.2.6 during WU 1ktv_100094407, so I reset the project. Perhaps its recoverable? Thanks for any advice. John |

Constant network traffic
(Message 16864)
Posted 29 Oct 2005 by John Perko Post:
The manager and the core will still need to communicate even when the manager is minimized to the tray. Exiting the manager should end the extra traffic you are seeing. They pass messages back and forth every 2 to 10 seconds.
I think you hit it, John. I haven\'t seen such behavior before. I\'m not sure why they have to communicate over ports. If there\'s a link somewhere that explains more about this, I would be happy to have it. Thanks. |

Constant network traffic
(Message 16795)
Posted 27 Oct 2005 by John Perko Post: I have \"Network activity suspended\" and yet the Zonealarm system tray icon and Overview page indicates traffic initiated by BOINC manager about every 2 seconds. No messages are reported during this time. Also an Einstein@Home work unit is listed as Ready to Report. I suspend all the work units listed and the traffic continues. Who could they be talking to? When BOINC manager is in the tray, traffic still continues. In answer to another question, I know it\'s BOINC, because the BOINC icon on the Zonealarm Security Suite Overview page (on top) is blinking when traffic occurs. Suspending BOINC in the Manager\'s Command menu doesn\'t stop it. The only thing that stops the traffic is completely exiting the program. Les mentioned a good point. I do have a router and it may just be talking to it, though I can\'t imagine why. I suppose this is just paranoia or nitpicking--your choice. Thanks, everybody. John |

Posted 23 Oct 2005 by John Perko Post: The new BOINC 5.22 runs with constant network traffic. I don\'t see why these projects can\'t run without continuous contact with their home servers. I tried to re-install 4.45, but 5.22 apparently did something to the data, because trying to run 4.45 gets a fatal error and the program doesn\'t start. I\'m beginning to think that this project is getting too complicated for its own good. I\'m thinking of bailing. The problems we\'ve been having lately (especially with climateprediction.net and their lack of communication with the people trying to help them do their research) are becoming not worth my time. |

Please let me know if this is the case. Thanks. I think the people who are managing this project are responsible for prominently displaying on the climateprediction web site that there is something terribly wrong and instructions for saving results (if possible). There's no need to force participants to rummage through the discussion forums. If you look at the web site, you'd think nothing at all is wrong, when the whole project is actually locked up. |
