21) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Linux Newbie Question: Best distribution for CPDN (Message 25191)
Posted 19 Nov 2006 by Dotsch
Post:
I would say, that the best distro is which you like and can do your work quick and easy.
The different distros differs very much, so it is not easy to find the right one.
I readed in the different BOINC forums, that ubuntu is easy to setup and to use.

But, I did not like it. I prefer Scientific Linux (SL). It is easy to setup and is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

It all depends on the CPU and overall quality of memory, etc. -- also on the parameter mix for a given Model.

At the moment, my machines all run WinXP, three with 32-bit version, three with 64-bit. None in Linux because the TCM is a bit faster in Windoze.
Three A64 X2 4400+ boxes have models ranging from 1.88-1.98 s/TS.
Pentium D 940, Models at 1.89 and 1.90 s/TS.
Core 2 Duo e6600, two Models at 1.54 s/TS.
Pentium IV 2.8GHz + 10% overclock, with Hyperthreading enabled, Models at 4.1 and 4.2 s/TS.

I\'ve no idea how any of that would compare to a MAC.

Thank you very much.
I am testing on a Intel Mac with a 2 GHz Core Duo, so your benchs are very good to compare.

Parallels is very slow. Did not made any timestep in some hours, but is still on the CPUs.

But it looks better with CrossOver. But I am still testing.

Les and AstroWX could you please contact me at seti_boinc at dotsch dot de.

Thanks for that information, Dotsch. Another good idea shot down. Pity.

Wish we could accomodate MAC users (which includes my youngest son) but, as Les noted, it isn\'t in the cards for now.

I am still gave it not up.

I am not shure, what the cause of the performance problem is. I will try crossover, too.

In the moment I am testing CDPN with Parallels Desktop. The overhead is smaller. But I am not shure about the performance of CPDN.
What are the typical runtimes for a hadcm model ? - How many TS/s are typical ?
24) Questions and Answers : Wish list : IA64 Bit client!!!!!windows or linux!!!!! (Message 24902)

Post:
Why nobody never try to compile a Ia64bit Client for Itanium systhems?? or maybe somone have ??
i need one for My Itanium systhems.
Thx

At SETI and SIMAP are applications for IA64 on HP-UX and Linux available. The BOINC client is avaialable for Linux IA64 and HP-UX on IA64 at the boinc third party site (boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php).

Update: the Boincmgr can\'t connect to the client under crossover. this will need debugging from the crossover standpoint; perhaps some IPC problems? however, i note that genuine windows (tm) folk have also experienced this problem; they reported various issues w/ firewalls, etc. i\'ll see if the source code is illuminating... in any case, i\'m likely to need help from codeweavers to fix this issue.

so, no immediate solution here.

I have tried it with darwine (same source like crossover, but freeware).
The GUI PRC did not work with the boinc manager, but with boinccmd.
I have tried it with SETI, but the performance is painless slow. The emulation eats about to 50 % of one CPU.
26) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Sparc Linux Platform (Message 24899)
Posted 28 Oct 2006 by Dotsch
Post:
This project has no support for Sparc machines.
If it can run generic Linux, then you may be in business.

No, Linux x86 binaries did not work on Linux on SPARC, because there are complete different architectures and not binary compatible.

SIMAP and SETI are the only two projects, which supports Linux on SPARC.
27) Message boards : Number crunching : Trickle model dates for coupled model (Message 22530)
Posted 1 May 2006 by Dotsch
Post:
Trickles occur on the 1/12/ of model year. I\'m sure someone will correct me if this is wrong, but I think it is at the end of the day rather than the start.

This is ever 0.625% of the model.
Therefore from your status you are currently 1/2 way to your first trickle.

Hm, but my model has now at about 1 1/2 years computed and is at 0.30 %. So my model should had trickled one times.
So I am a little bit confused about the informations in the screensaver. My model shows about 8300 TS per model year. And it is after 1.5 years at 0.30 % with 12500 TS.
With your calculations my model should be at 0.9 % at 1.5 years and trickled one time.

Does your model say \"running\" under Status?

If you right-click on the \'B\' icon in the bottom right corner of your screen, does it say \"Network activity suspended\", or one of the others?

My model is running.
The network is set to always available. But the system is behind a router in a LAN, and the router is not always online.

Among the messages in the Messages tab, are there lines about contacting the server, followed 3 lines later by a line ending in \"succeded\"?

************
Such as these:
Sending scheduler request to http://climateapps3.atm.ox.ac.uk/hadam3_cgi/cgi
Reason: To send trickle-up message
Note: not requesting new work or reporting results
Scheduler request to http://climateapps3.atm.ox.ac.uk/hadam3_cgi/cgi succeeded
************

Searched around in the stderrror and stdout files, and found no errors, or trickle requests. Only one trickle failure - but this was some seconds, before the actual model was downloaded.
Btw. is the trickle a RPC to the scheduler, or a normal transfer like a WU or a result which is shown in the transfers tab of the boinc manager ?
Is it posible to retricker the trickle manualy ?

In the moment my model is on 25/05/1921 00:30 with 12529 of 4147560 timesteps, progress at 0.30 %.

Post:
It\'s once per model year, which in the coupled model is 26,920 timesteps (72 timesteps per day)

Now I am a little bit confused about the trickeling...
I am computing the coupled model (hadcm3lb 5.08) and it have computed about 1,5 years of the model time and get not any trickle jet.
If I look at the screensaver, it show my about 6000 timesteps per model year and about 4147560 timesteps for the complete model.

30) Questions and Answers : Windows : Suspend to disk resets to 0 % (Message 22093)
Posted 16 Apr 2006 by Dotsch
Post:
After I resume my system (W2K) from a suspend to disk, the progess and CPU time jumps back to 0 % and the model begins again.
This only happens, if CPDN was running when I suspend the system to disk. There is no problem if a other project is running at the suspend, and CPDN is stopped.
