1) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : Switching to renewable energy (Message 14604)
Posted 22 Jul 2005 by old_user10
Post:
In the UK, all generating companies have to generate a certain percentage of green energy. However, if a company generates more than necessary, it can sell some of this to the other companies to offset their requirements.

Now, the minimum amount of green energy is set by the government. It rises each year to meet various targets. But, if a customer pays for green energy, then the company must generate at least that much. So, if the total required by the customers is less than the total demanded by the government, then the customers have no effect on emissions. However, if the customers demand more than the government, then the companies do have to generate more and emissions do drop.

There are basically 4 types of companies:

1/ Some companies generate too little green energy and buy the extra. These are 'bad'

2/ Some companies generate too much and sell their excess. These are 'not so bad'.

3/ Some companies generate too much and don't sell the excess - they just use it to supply 'non-green' customers. These are 'good'

4/ On one tarrif I have seen, they generate too much and in addition buy excess off others at higher prices to stop the bad companies getting it, forcing them to generate more themselves. These are 'best'

The first 3 should cost the same but the last one costs more because they're paying over the odds for the extra green energy so you effectively end up paying a subsidy to force non-green customers to receive green energy.

I personally switched to NPower Juice last year at no extra cost. My energy is now 100% offshore wind generated.

Version 2.6 is now packaged and ready to download -
Graphics is faster and cleaner
More world cities added
BOINC support improved

NOTE: This has been built with a new version of the compiler so if anyone has problems on different platforms, please let me know!

PS. Honza, I couldn't see any obvious reason why it wouldn't work for you unless it's because you're on a different drive. You don't need the quotes though. Try installing CPView onto X: as well to see if that helps.

The new version copies all the files into one folder and the working directory should be left pointing to that. Where have you installed BOINC to? You can set BOINCDirectory to something like c:\\\\program files\\\\boinc\\\\projects\\\\climateprediction.net

The double backslashes are important!

I've packaged the whole lot up with installshield. Unfortunately it's three times the size now, but it should install all the required files to the correct locations, making life much easier. For those of you who have installed to strange locations, you can set the BOINCDirectory value in the .ini file to point to where the .xml files live.

the new download link is:

Hi there, I'll have a look in more detail tomorrow but the problem is likely that I added boinc but haven't removed the old classic code. the cpdnshmem.dll is the 'classic' shared memory. I guess you could copy it from another machine for now but I'll try and find all the places it is used to properly disable it if you only have the boinc version installed.

Hi there, haven't been around for a while but I'm back now...

If anyone's interested, there is now a BOINC compatible version (2.5) of CPView available for download from my website:

<a href="http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm/cpdn.html">Martin's CPDN Site</a>

The boinc version of CPFarmView will probably be ready some time next week. Please read the installation instructions on the page as it's important where some files are located.

&gt; well sort of but then as jkeck notes what about HT's, and just because someone
&gt; has 2 or 4 or 8 procs doesn't mean every single one is running CPDN etc. So I

Would it be easy to have a 'number of models' column instead then?

Post:
&gt; I imagine the size and energy cumulatively from
&gt; wind is so much greater than what we can "take" from it that we're safe?

I think the energy taken from the wind by a natural windbreak of various sized trees and shrubs - which convert it mostly to white noise I imagine - would be much larger than that taken by a windmill. Either way, the real difference between wind and fossil fuels is that wind power converts energy which is already in the environment, channels it and eventually it gets released back into the environment. With fossil fuels, and nuclear fuels for that matter, the energy was safely locked up so burning it gives a net increase which is what drives the climate change.

Basically, climate change is caused by a change in the net energy in the system which is what drives it, caused by for example increased solar activity, increased greenhouse gases which reduce radiation back into space, burning of fossil fuels. But... You also have to include in the list things such as planting trees which also have an effect. Simply redistributing a constant amount of energy won't change anything, however many butterflies you have on the job.

&gt; for CPDN the "benchmarks" aren't really used other than for information

&gt; model performance is pretty closely tied to your FPU &amp; memory bandwidth,
&gt; however the benchmark values seem to be "all over the place" so hard to
&gt; correspond (i.e. if you look <A HREF="http://cpdn.comlab.ox.ac.uk/cpu.zip">at
&gt; the CPU comparison page</A>)
&gt;
&gt;
&gt;

That page looks like it lists every machine because there are a duplicated rows showing the same OS, #CPUs, Clock speed etc. Do you have an aggregated version which just lists each machine and OS combination once?

Just noticed the new \'number of PCs\' column in the team stats which is nice, but would it not be more useful to have total number of processors instead. A 2 processor machine is pretty much 2 machines in one box by my reckoning.

As long as it is accurate, it gives a good indication of who is catching up and who is falling behind which is a good approximation to the conquests on one of the 3rd party stats pages.

But while you're looking at this stuff, pleeese can we have (as someone else asked elsewhere) our overall rank displayed on the 'your account page' next to the total credit.

&gt; I'm afraid not - not yet!
&gt; Perhaps Marting (as author of this excelent add-on) will have more details
&gt; about ETA.
&gt;
&gt; Martin wrote 2 weeks ago:
&gt; "As soon as there is some way to access the model under boinc, I'll update
&gt; them both. At the moment there is no equivalent of cpdnshmem.dll through which
&gt; to access it."
&gt;
&gt; See for more -
&gt; http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?p=19116#19116
&gt;

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. The ability to watch threads on the old board made life much easier.

There is no ETA as yet on a boinc enabled CPView - it's whenever Carl gets the time to create the shared memory but that's not a priority for the team as I understand it because the boinc version won't be used by the Open University course and so there is no direct requirement from the project for extra visualisation at the moment.

You can use the current CPView with the files in the boinc\projects\climateprediction.net\\dataout directory. It just doesn't display the live data yet.

It's when the model gets unstable and becomes very cold ( a ball of ice ). It usually happens because something has gone wrong. Usually the model rewinds a bit and tries again but eventually it gives up.

16) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Shared Memory (Message 2863)
Posted 3 Sep 2004 by old_user10
Post:
I was thinking about Carl\'s intention to provide shared memory access under boinc, the same as in cpdn classic but it occurs that cpdn doing its own thing is a bit against the point of boinc. Instead how about the following additions to a generic shared memory dll from boinc itself which could interface with the projects through a common api. Then people could easily create their own visualisations for any boinc project.

1. GetProjects(&amp;list) - returns a list of all projects the user is currently running, with an id and type for each. Eg:

1 CPDN
2 CPDN
3 SETI
4 PREDICTOR

2. GetSharedData(ProjectID,&amp;datalist) - returns a list of the data available from the project. Eg. For CPDN:

1 Timestep
2 Phase
3 Model Date&amp;Time
4 Temperature
5 Precipitation
6 Pressure
7 Clouds
8 Snow&amp;ice
9 Wind (pleeese)

3. GetDataDimensions(DataID, &amp;x,&amp;y,&amp;z,&amp;t) - returns the x,y,z dimensions of the dataset and the data type such as string, integer, double. Also the units to enable sensible display.

Eg for clouds: 73,96,3,float,%
Eg. For temp: 73,96,1,float,K

4. GetData(DataID,&amp;mem) - fills the user allocated memory (mem) with the requested data

Using this, the user can ask boinc what data is available for which projects and request that boinc gets the data from the project and populates some user allocated memory with it. That\'s all that is needed to create our own visualisations.

Ideally this would all be implemented in such a way that a generic visualisation tool could immediately display a new type of project without recoding, effectively removing the need for new boinc projects to spend any time developing their own visualisations. Boinc has standardised the method of distributing workunits but why stop there?

"Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule"

Closest I could find in the imdb

full quote:

[Dana is possessed]
Dr. Peter Venkman : I make it a rule never to get involved with possessed people.
[Dana starts passionately making out with him]
Dr. Peter Venkman : Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule...

It wouldn't have helped in this case. The advice from Seti ( posted somewhere on this board ) etc was to stop 3.2 from downloading any more work units, letting them complete and then upgrade. They did say that 4.05 won't run the old seti workunits and you'll have to download new compatible ones.

&gt; I noticed that CPDN saves its current progress about every 30 minutes. Is this
&gt; somehow configurable to, say, 5 minutes? Since my computers don't run all day,
&gt; this would give me a better feeling.
&gt;

One of the boinc settings sets it to write to the disk less often, but by default cpdn saves every 144 timesteps which at about 4s/ts would be about every 10 minutes
