Having registered my PC to take part in the BOINC version of \'climateprediction\', I have now found out that Windows 98SE is not supported.

Anyone advise how I can prevent the downloading of work units to my PC (until I\'ve had time to install XP on a new PC).

regards,

Timbo

(But still crunching the non-BOINC version)

Timbo,

Just make sure you download BOINC V4.09. This is compatible with Win9x. The reason the CPDN download page only shows 2k/XP was due to older versions of BOINC (4.05) causing Win9x machines to grind to a halt and then require a power reset.

Crunch away!

Unfortunately, although BOINC is now Win 98 compatible, CPDN is not under BOINC, nor is it likely to be possible to make it so.

If you want to run other BOINC projects, then you can just detach from CPDN (under the projects tab, right click on climate prediction).

If you would like to take part in CPDN you are very welcome to do so, provided of course that your machine meets the minimum spec. You will need to run the classic version, available <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/download/index_ou.php">here</a>.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your kind reply.

I actually do run BOINC v4.09 and currently, I'm crunching data for BOINC versions of SETI and LHC - both without problems.

However, for climate prediction, every WU downloaded, runs for about 2 hours or so and then fails with the following error messages (these from yesterday 26th Sept):

2004-09-26 09:54:59 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 2zh3_000160691_2 ( - exit code -2 (0xfffffffe))
2004-09-26 11:56:20 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 2zhp_000160713_3 ( - exit code -2 (0xfffffffe))
2004-09-26 13:57:34 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 2zil_000160746_1 ( - exit code -2 (0xfffffffe))
2004-09-26 15:58:48 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 2zj9_000160770_2 ( - exit code -2 (0xfffffffe))

No further downloads were possible as I had supposedly exceeded my daily quota..!

This has been happening for a few days, since I registered - it's not "new" it's "always like this !"

My initial assumption was that the reason for this was that climate prediction didn't work on Win 98SE (as per the FAQ).

So, can you (or someone) advise where the problem is - why do the CP WU's fail?

BTW: All 3 of the different projects WU's are kept in memory, as per climate predictions suggestion, thus:

"<i>If you are time slicing make sure you've set your preferences to have Leave applications in memory while preempted? set to yes (the BOINC default is no). CPDN checkpoints every 144 timesteps, and if you don't leave it in memory any calculations you've done since the previous checkpoint will have to be redone when CPDN starts up again. If other applications require the memory CPDN may get swapped out, but that's a much smaller overhead than you'd get if you were preempted at 143 timesteps!</i>"

Hi Carl,

Hope your testing proves that "climateprediction" can run under BOINC v4.09 + Win98SE.

Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you !

Timbo

Carl,

Following on:

Can I safely delete the 14 sub-directories created under the "projects/climateprediction.net" folder as these WU's were all computed and returned (even though they all errored).

Alternatively, can I re-crunch them if Win98SE can be made to run the "climateprediction" project.

rgds,

Timbo

yes, you may as well delete anything under the CPDN folders on a 98/ME/NT4 box that was using the "old" (i.e. hadsm3_4.03) CPDN/BOINC. I have just put up a new version (4.04) that should run under 98/ME/NT4.
