Message 69777 - Posted: 12 Oct 2023, 6:47:49 UTC - in response to Message 69772.

Thanks Tim.
Obviously there is something different about how CPDN is set up and something different about you Windows7 installation from Richard's.

I have one speculation.
I know it was this year that CPDN upgraded the BOINC server software to the latest version. Many projects are still working on older incarnations of the server code. As you suggest in the grand scheme of things it probably isn't worth spending lots more time on this but obviously if any of us come up with anything that might help we will post again.

Message 69783 - Posted: 12 Oct 2023, 15:39:56 UTC - in response to Message 69772.

I've done a comparison of the two logs - yours which failed, and mine which worked.

The big difference between them is that after agreeing to the Terms and Conditions, my machine went on to do two additional steps. First, it went to "Fetching master file" and "Fetching scheduler list" (which is what I expected to see after "get_project_config.php"). And having done that, it moved straight on to "Sending scheduler request: Project initialization.". Your log skips both those stages, and moves straight on to getting notices - which is where I join you again.

It might be interesting to "Reset project" from BOINC Manager - which should delete any stray CPDN files - and then "Remove" it - which should remove all traces from client_state.xml. Have a look with a text editor, and check that there's really nothing about CPDN in client_state before trying again.

Failing to attach a new test machine to the main project. It baulks at 'Scheduler list fetch', and the given url is https://www.climateprediction.net/index.php

That's the same as the banner address above, and that's giving a 503 error in a browser.

In my Firefox I get the following message,
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
After doing a new build from source, I had failed to download any work for the last lot of Linux tasks on testing but it did download for other projects. But it did attach to the project fine. This was last week.

Project communication failed: attempting to reference site
Internet access OK - project servers might be temporarily down

Version of BOINC Manager on Linux 7.16.16. On Windows 11 I had latest version.

Currently no work for Linux machines in any case though hopefully there will be soon.

Likely to be the same problem. Last week it was just the server rejecting connections: now the whole climateprediction.net domain seems to missing from dns. And CPDN can't fully function without it.

OK,
Andy knows about the problem. There are infrastructure changes happening at Oxford involving the virtual machines. He will sort out whatever needs it when the IT department there have finished.

I have just added a new host. I am an existing user so can't say for certain everything is fixed but that part of it is at least.

I just attached a new computer (VM) successfully and am getting work - so I think these issues are resolved, at least for now!

Thanks for letting us know. I've just added one more bog-standard Windows 7 machine, from the address offered by the 'Attach to project' wizard, and that sailed through too.

And the machine on a VM I had attached that was getting an http error once I managed to attach it is no longer getting that error. However it is running Linux so there is no work for it currently, the testing branch task it was running having crashed out when the power went out just after midnight last night.
