I looked at the Computer breakdown by operating system page today for the first time in several years and was a bit surprised to see no active Mac computers listed. This despite the fact that I could find one after a bit of looking that had recent credit. I was able to find after a lot of searching a task on Mac this one that had been granted credit.

Any thoughts?

Interesting that the only Linux systems listed are Darwin based. What about the others?

This project has a blind spot for Macs? :)

My iMac's completed and received credit for five HadCM3 shorts since November and is halfway through a sixth as I write.

They're the only Climateprediction.net tasks it's ever received. Before that, my old MacBook Pro received a couple of unfinishable tasks in April 2018 and before that there'd been none since September 2017. The project's been essentially dead on Macs for the past few years and I'd be surpised if there were many still attached to it. I've only kept my iMac requesting tasks all this time in the hope that it'll prevent my previous credit from being lost in the name of GDPR, as happened to a lot of people who hadn't been actively contributing for a while when the regulation was about to be introduced.

The only current task type that will run on Macs is the hadcm3. However the openIFS tasks have been having some tests on Mac computers recently. The European group behind openIFS have only made versions for Mac and Linux. The lack of Mac tasks is down to what task type the scientists feel is easiest to use for the research they are doing/which task type suits the science best. The same issue means there is not a lot of work around for Windows at the moment either.

But, don't hold your breath waiting for OpenIFS work. I don't know anyone who has a clue when the first tasks will reach the main site. The testing branch stuff has all been generated in Oxford and is about making sure they work. Unlike the other task types, they are open source so if anyone would like to port the code to Windows I am sure no one would object?

My Mac mini no longer upgrades properly and lots of standard operating system functions don’t work (which it complains about), so I thought of getting a new one. However, the new ones have the M1 chip rather than Intel and that does raise questions about CPDN compatibility, Rosetta conversions notwithstanding.

The present state of Mac support isn’t great but the future might be worse unless the project ports the code to a native M1 compiler.

Having seen some of the conversations on the BOINC forums I did wonder about that.

My "basement computer" is a 2010 MacBook Pro 13", and it's gotten two of the HadCM3 tasks in the past two weeks... Guess I'm just lucky?

Batch 837 had a whole lot of extra ones dumped in the hopper just over two weeks ago. The last ones went out in the early hours of this morning. (UK time)

Enjoy because it may be a while till the next ones arrive. (Though there will likely be a few resends due to crashes.)
