I can get them fine on other projects, but anytime I try to connect, I get no work from this project. I even told Boinc to get 10 days worth of work, and tried it when I had no other tasks/projects running this is all the log says: 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.14.2 for windows_x86_64 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.47.1 OpenSSL/1.0.2g zlib/1.2.8 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Running under account David 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (driver version 441.41, CUDA version 10.2, compute capability 7.5, 4096MB, 3550MB available, 11151 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 1: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (driver version 441.41, CUDA version 10.2, compute capability 6.1, 4096MB, 3560MB available, 4503 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (driver version 441.41, device version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA, 8192MB, 3550MB available, 11151 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER (driver version 441.41, device version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA, 8192MB, 3550MB available, 11151 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 1: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (driver version 441.41, device version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA, 6144MB, 3560MB available, 4503 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 1: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (driver version 441.41, device version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA, 6144MB, 3560MB available, 4503 GFLOPS peak) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Host name: Sulaco 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Processor: 16 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 5.20GHz [Family 6 Model 158 Stepping 13] 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss htt tm pni ssse3 fma cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 movebe popcnt aes f16c rdrandsyscall nx lm avx avx2 vmx smx tm2 pbe fsgsbase bmi1 hle smep bmi2 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] OS: Microsoft Windows 10: Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.18363.00) 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Memory: 31.91 GB physical, 36.66 GB virtual 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Disk: 476.31 GB total, 95.73 GB free 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Local time is UTC -5 hours 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] No WSL found. 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] VirtualBox version: 6.0.14 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [---] Config: use all coprocessors 30-Nov-2019 18:32:09 [climateprediction.net] URL https://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID 1495421; resource share 198 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [climateprediction.net] General prefs: from climateprediction.net (last modified 28-Nov-2019 03:27:58) 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [climateprediction.net] Computer location: home 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] General prefs: using separate prefs for home 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] Reading preferences override file 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] Preferences: 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] max memory usage when active: 32354.10 MB 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] max memory usage when idle: 32354.10 MB 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] max disk usage: 96.85 GB 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] max CPUs used: 15 30-Nov-2019 19:40:50 [---] (to change preferences, visit a project web site or select Preferences in the Manager) 30-Nov-2019 19:40:51 [climateprediction.net] Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 30-Nov-2019 19:40:51 [climateprediction.net] Requesting new tasks for CPU 30-Nov-2019 19:40:52 [climateprediction.net] update requested by user 30-Nov-2019 19:40:56 [climateprediction.net] Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks 30-Nov-2019 19:40:56 [climateprediction.net] No tasks sent |

Oh hmmm.. if I'm reading this right, there's only work for Linux at the moment (kind of silly if you ask me) |

Work for Windows has been very scarce since last Spring. When Windows WU's are released there are usually only a few thousand and they go fast. Often in a hour or less. |

Oh hmmm.. if I'm reading this right, there's only work for Linux at the moment (kind of silly if you ask me) Most of the software has only been developed for single platforms. The different applications are suited to different climate issues the researchers want to look into so it is largely down to what researchers in different universities around the world are working on at any one time which platforms there is work for. There is work currently in testing which when complete should lead to some more work for the Windows platform. I don't have any time scale for this however. |

I'm just saying it's too bad that right now it's exclusively Linux because that eliminates a LOT of crunchers. I would think they would have the WUs on both platforms to get as much help for the projects as possible I supposed I could put Ubuntu on Oracle Virtual box to get WUs, but that's just not as efficient as running them natively in Windows |

I supposed I could put Ubuntu on Oracle Virtual box to get WUs, but that's just not as efficient as running them natively in Windows I agree. in contrast, there seems to be virtually no hit when running Windows tasks under WINE on Linux. |

There are only 3 or 4 researchers active at the moment, and it only takes about 3,000 models to cover the range of values that are needed for any individual project. There were several batches of Windows work a few weeks ago. Now the researchers are waiting for the results to slowly return. The worst are from those people who hoard a large number, and then spend a few months slowly running them. This is possibly the most over subscribed BOINC project on the planet. Not everyone is going to get work. |

Hi, I'm also not getting any work for my Windows machine. However the Project Status page shows 1353 tasks ready to send, all of them for the task "UK Met Office HadAM4 at N216 resolution". Is this one of those Unix/Linux-only Tasks? If not, any idea why I'm not getting anything? My Event Log just says "No tasks sent", with no other reason. Thanks. Doug |

Yes, they're all Linux. To see what's what, look at the Application name, in this case UK Met Office HadAM4 at N216 resolution, then at the Applications page to find which OS they're for. Or: remember that Weather At Home 2 (wah2) are the Windows models. There's no Windows work in sight at the moment. |

One of my computers, Id:943816, has not gotten any WAH tasks assigned since 2018. It seems to have had a persistent problem at that time which caused every work unit to error out. Since then I have totally rebuilt the machine, but there have been no attempts to send it any more work units. Is there a sort of black list that locks a machine from being assigned work units? If so, how can I check the status of my machine and perhaps get it reinstated. I understand that Windows work comes in bursts, and if you're not one of the fortunate few you don't get any tasks. I'd just like to make sure that there's not something else standing in the way of this machine getting a WAH task and processing it correctly.. |

Researcher groups around the world use which ever climate program does what they need. These programs stopped being written for all OSs several years ago, so once they choose a program, the OS that it runs on is automatic. And for some time now, the research has been for programs that use Linux. To block a computer, the project sets Maximum daily WU quota per CPU to -1/day |

Hello, I also don't get any WU's all the time although there are messages about new simulations. What 's wrong ? Christophe |

Hello, None of the work units currently sitting on the servers waiting to be crunched are for Windows. Hadam types are all Linux only, Hadcm3s are Linux and Mac only. The only model type currently used that Windows can crunch (without using WSL, virtual box or other virtualisation system) are WAH (weather at home) tasks. There are so many Windows computers waiting with free processors to crunch these they go almost as soon as they are uploaded to the servers so if your computer doesn't request work within a couple of hours or so of them being released, you miss out. In the past, the situation was reversed and there were long periods with virtually no work for Linux so a lot of us installed WINE to run Windows tasks. There are posts regarding using WSL (Windows System for Linux) and while I haven't got a windows box to test it on, that seems to be the easiest solution currently. |

Moderators: Could someone please comment on the probability of when Windows supported work units might become available. I see no valid purpose of letting my multiple computers (all Windows) keep hitting the server requesting tasks and to then be deferred for the standard one hour or so. Much appreciated. Bill |

That is the big unknown. All the research groups regularly using Windows climate models disappeared early last year. The recent batches were from a single person at Oxford, who has "many irons in the fire". For the indefinite future, Windows is out, and Linux is in. |

if you look at the server status page it will tell you what work units there are and of what type. The only ones for Windows are the WAH2 tasks. I am afraid that those of us who moderate these fora have no more idea than anyone else about when there will be more Windows work. (Sometimes we get a hint a few days before hand or sometimes a few months before hand, the first being a private message to the moderators, the second work on the testing site however that doesn't always mean main site work to follow at any speed.) |

Thanks for the explanation - I had a feeling that was the case :-( I'll just have to have a dig around and see what other project grabs my fancy and has work for a Windows PC. |

Thanks for the explanation - I had a feeling that was the case :-( There are a few people who have got WSL going to run Linux tasks from within Windows. I don't have a Windows machine to play with that myself. Otherwise, there are five tasks going through the testing branch at the moment for Windows machines and in about ten or twelve days when they are finished, I work might start on preparing a main site batch. |

Thanks for the explanation - I had a feeling that was the case :-( I run Linux work units using Oracle VM Virtualbox on a 3rd Generation i7-based Windows PC. Over circa six months using the VM, 33 completed and 11 crashed (during Windows updates). I have temporarily paused the WinDoze updates to avoid the crashes.. |
